Diocesan Schools Officer

An opportunity is available for a Schools Officer to work within the Department for Education based at the Archdiocesan Offices, (LACE), Sefton Park, Liverpool.

Reporting to the Director of Education, your primary responsibility will be to provide support and advice to headteachers, school governors and clergy across 228 schools and colleges associated with the Archdiocese.

You will be required to work up to 21 hours per week by flexible arrangement to meet the needs of the Department. The salary is £30,783.48 per annum (full time equivalent salary is £51,305.80). We also offer 5 weeks holiday (pro rata) plus pension scheme with The Peoples Pension. o rata Applicants must have; Good standard of education to degree level or equivalent, qualified teacher status, experience of headship in Catholic Schools or comparable leadership level in a local authority, knowledge of school improvement strategies, highly developed verbal and written communication skills, ability to use own initiative and work to deadlines and also be a practising Roman Catholic.

Role Profile

Together with other Diocesan Schools’ Officer’s and the wider team, you will provide advice and support for approximately 240 schools and colleges across the Archdiocese, their headteachers, governors and parish priests.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1 Assisting with the provision of an advice service (by telephone and correspondence) to Governors, Headteachers, Teaching and Non-teaching Staff and Parents on aspects of Diocesan Catholic school provision.

2 Assisting with the provision of advice at meetings of Headteachers and Governors.

3 Giving support and advice to priests in their work as Governors and in their relationship with schools serving their parish/pastoral area.

4 Representing the Department at meetings with the Archdiocesan Department for Education and the Catholic Education Service, Local Authorities and similar national, regional or local government agencies, Teaching and Non-teaching Unions.

5 Assisting with the calling and minuting of meetings, working parties and committees.

6 Liaising with Governors, Headteachers, LA Officers and Curial Departments as appropriate.

Key Accountabilities

1 Being familiar with and giving advice to Governing Bodies on school mission statements, school development plans, the National Curriculum, school budgets and inspections of schools, with particular reference to the basic purposes of Catholic schools.

2 Provision (shared) of advice service to Governors, Headteachers, Parish Priests, Staff and Parents including legal and contractual issues.

3 Arranging the annual cycle of meetings with Headteachers in Local Authority areas, providing advice at such meetings and representing department at national, regional and local meetings.

4 Assisting in teacher recruitment programmes and advising and supporting Governing Bodies at short- listing, appointment and induction of Heads and Deputies.

5 Providing, in liaison with the Head of Christian Education as appropriate, pastoral support, including induction and in-service, for Heads and Deputies.

6 Acting as Diocesan representative on Education Scrutiny/Select or comparable committees.

7 Devising and recommending to Director appropriate programmes of in-service for development of senior staff and organising and leading of such.

8 Supporting schools and liaising, as appropriate, with LA Officers in the agenda for raising standards and ensuring efficient and effective educational provision.

9 Undertaking such other duties as may reasonably be required, including the lead role in one of the following: Post-16 Education, Governor Training, Primary or Secondary Education, Personnel and In- service Development.

Data Protection Where it is a requirement of the job for the post holder to use computers or other information technology, he/she will be required to ensure that security procedures are followed as appropriate and that confidential information for example, passwords, are not communicated to unauthorised individuals.

Safeguarding: The post holder, during the execution of this role, will come into contact with children and vulnerable adults. However, it is not considered regulated activity and therefore the post holder does not require a DBS check. The post holder will however adhere to all Diocesan safeguarding procedures.

Health and Safety All employees are required by Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts and omissions.

Display Screen Equipment Users Section 39 of the Employee Handbooks states that employees who, following a suitable assessment, are deemed to be a Display Screen Equipment (DSE) User will be eligible to have an eye test funded by the Archdiocese of Liverpool and, where necessary, financial support towards the costs of lenses.

This post does not require the job holder to habitually use DSE as part of their normal work and therefore is not classed as a Display Screen Equipment User.

Voluntary Duties During your employment, should you wish to engage with any activities which are deemed voluntary in nature, these must be undertaken outside of your contractual working hours as they do not form part of your employment with the Archdiocese. Examples of such voluntary duties include; counting of offertory monies, assisting at funeral services; organising pilgrimages; preparing rotas for readers and ministers of communion; supervising volunteers or any other sacristy duties.
