(MUSIC) DREW LICHTENBERG: Hello, and welcome to the Prosecast of the Shakespeare Theater Company for “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” This is Episode Two of the 2013‐14 Season. This is your chance to explore the upcoming show on your own free time. I am Drew Lichtenberg, the Literary Associate at the Shakespeare Theatre Company, and the, I guess, the Production Dramaturge on this production of “Forum,” and I am joined not by Hannah Hessel, our beloved, dearly missed, uh, Audience Enrichment Manager, who is sick today, but I am joined instead by Garrett Anderson. GARRETT ANDERSON: Hi there. LICHTENBERG: Say hi to people, Garrett. ANDERSON: Hi to the people. (laughs) LICHTENBERG: Garrett, do you wanna introduce yourself? ANDERSON: Yeah, well, you already introduced Garrett Anderson, so, uh, I am the Artistic Fellow here at Shakespeare Theatre this season; done quite a bit of work dramaturgically with, with you, Drew, and, yeah, excited to be here, excited to do the Prosecast. THE ELECTRICAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE: HOME VIDEO, THE FAMILY, AND THE LIMITS OF PRIVACY IN THE DIGITAL AGE By Adam Capitanio A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY American Studies 2012 ABSTRACT THE ELECTRICAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE: HOME VIDEO, THE FAMILY, AND THE LIMITS OF PRIVACY IN THE DIGITAL AGE By Adam Capitanio One of the constituent features of the digital age has been the redrawing of the line between private and public. Millions of social media users willingly discuss intimate behavior and post private photographs and videos on the internet. Meanwhile, state and corporate bodies routinely violate individual privacy in the name of security and sophisticated marketing techniques. While these occurrences represent something new and different, they are unsurprising given the history of home and amateur media. In this dissertation, I argue that contemporary shifts in the nature of the public/private divide have historical roots in the aesthetics and style found in home movies and videos. In other words, long before Facebook and YouTube enabled users to publicly document their private lives, home movies and videos generated patterns of representation that were already shifting the unstable constitution of the “private” and the “public” spheres. Using critical theory and archival research, I demonstrate how home moviemakers represented their families and experiences in communal and liminal spaces, expanding the meaning of “home.” When video become the predominant medium for domestic usage, home mode artifacts became imbricated with television, granting them a form of phantasmagoric publicity that found fulfillment in the digital era. -

The ensemble performs ElSaffar’s compositions, ranging from highly microtonal, with ElSaffar’s unique harmonies extracted from the non-tempered pitches of the Maqam, to those drawing on an ancient Babylonian/Sumerian modal system, all within the context of standard jazz instrumentation. Looking back to the ancient and forward to innovative sonic possibilities, the band tackles this challenging music with dynamic intensity, rhythmic drive, and creative aplomb. We know that each academic year you are presented with a multitude of thought provoking and exciting educational visits, performances, exhibitions, tours, and other off-site opportunities to enrich your students’ classroom curriculum and to inspire them as they continue to transform into young adults, sharing their bright minds and open hearts with the world around them. And, each year, there is less time and fewer funds available to participate in these experiences, which are deeply meaningful in so very many ways. We appreciate that you found La Cage aux Folles compelling and enriching, and chose to share this particular story - and all of its many messages - with your students as you start the 2019-2020 school year. Over the next several pages, we hope to highlight information that will prepare your students to invest in this production and give them a glimpse into the world of the play. In a phone conversation with Melissa Rain Anderson, director of Geva’s production of La Cage aux Folles, Melissa immediately expressed her desire to share this piece with Rochester’s student population (with whom she is very familiar from her years of playing Mrs. Cratchit in Geva’s A Christmas Carol, as well countless other roles on our stage, and directing several recent Geva productions). Melissa specifically highlighted inclusion and acceptance (of ourselves and of others), drag culture, LGBTQ+ illumination, family relationships, generational divides, identity, community, and the highly theatrical style of this musical as opportunities for students to connect with the characters and the story they’ll experience in the theatre. -
