The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) is a non-profit organisation which represents an international network of people from all over the world committed to bringing books and children together. NEWSLETTER No 27 November, 2015 President’s Letter Dear members and supporters of IBBY Australia, 2016 will be our Golden Anniversary year—yes, fifty years since the foundation of IBBY Australia. And it is time to take stock. IBBY fulfils the unique role of showcasing Australia’s youth literature to the world. Our national section has faithfully maintained such core activities as celebrating International Children’s Book Day, selecting Honour Books, and nominating writers and illustrators for the Hans Christian Andersen Awards, the highest accolade in children’s literature. Australian members have participated in many international Congresses. IBBY began in Europe, but now is worldwide. We are increasing connections in our region, through regional Congresses and newsletters. We hope that Rhoda Myra Garces-Bacsal’s presentation, at our AGM in WA, is herald of more regional interaction. My personal hopes for the future of IBBY Australia include an increased commitment to the social justice aspects of its work, such as support for the vital IBBY Children in Crisis Fund. Another hope is to establish IBBY strongly in every state of Australia. There are hubs in WA and NSW, and supportive members throughout the country. Among those who bring their expertise to important IBBY tasks, the advisory panels for the 2016 Honour Book selections included Cathy Pusey (WA) and Cathie Tasker (NSW); and the panel which has begun reading entries for the 2016 Ena Noël Award includes Nella Pickup (Tas) and Bev Jacobson (WA). -

Biography The Queensland Art Fund was organized by Vida Lahey and Daphne Mayo to promote public interest in the Queensland Art Gallery. Through purchases and gifts, the Fund acquired paintings, books and a collection of 2000 photographs given by the Carnegie Corporation, New York. When Art Fund activities ceased, the collections were divided among the Queensland Art Gallery, the Queensland University and other public bodies. Book History in Australia since 1950 Katherine Bode Preprint: Chapter 1, Oxford History of the Novel in English: The Novel in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the South Pacific since 1950. Edited by Coral Howells, Paul Sharrad and Gerry Turcotte. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017. Publication of Australian novels and discussion of this phenomenon have long been sites for the expression of wider tensions between national identity and overseas influence characteristic of postcolonial societies. Australian novel publishing since 1950 can be roughly divided into three periods, characterized by the specific, and changing, relationship between national and non-national influences. In the first, the 1950s and 1960s, British companies dominated the publication of Australian novels, and publishing decisions were predominantly made overseas. Yet a local industry also emerged, driven by often contradictory impulses of national sentiment, and demand for American-style pulp fiction. In the second period, the 1970s and 1980s, cultural nationalist policies and broad social changes supported the growth of a vibrant local publishing industry. At the same time, the significant economic and logistical challenges of local publishing led to closures and mergers, and—along with the increasing globalization of publishing—enabled the entry of large, multinational enterprises into the market. This latter trend, and the processes of globalization and deregulation, continued in the final period, since the 1990s. Nevertheless, these decades have also witnessed the ongoing development and consolidation of local publishing of Australian novels— including in new forms of e-publishing and self-publishing—as well as continued government and social support for this activity, and for Australian literature more broadly. -

The visit was also an opportunity to connect to her Irish heritage. During some 'off duty' time, as she was cycling through the Irish countryside, she came across the notice that forms the title of this paper: 'Wanted, a strong girl, able to milk and make herself agreeable' (Lahey 1919, 9). That Vida even recorded the advertisement in her journal says something about the impression that it made on her. The roles of domestic worker and 'agreeable' object form the twin poles of an ideologically determined continuum along which single women have traditionally been expected to define themselves. It is a short, rather constrained continuum because the definition of femininity has been articulated in tandem with the heterosexual institution of the family. -

A Career in Writing Judah Waten and the Cultural Politics of a Literary Career David John Carter MA Dip Ed (Melb) Thesis submitted as total fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Deakin University, March 1993. Summary This thesis examines the literary career of Judah Waten (1911-1985) in order to focus on a series of issues in Australian cultural history and theory. The concept of the career is theorised as a means of bringing together the textual and institutional dimensions of writing and being a writer in a specific cultural economy. The guiding question of the argument which re-emerges in different ways in each chapter is: in what ways was it possible to write and to be a writer in a given time and place? Waten's career as a Russian-born, Jewish, Australian nationalist, communist and realist writer across the middle years of this century is, for the purposes of the argument, at once usefully exemplary and usefully marginal in relation to the literary establishment. His texts provide the central focus for individual chapters; at the same time each chapter considers a specific historical moment and a specific set of issues for Australian cultural history, and is to this extent self-contained. Recent work in narrative theory, literary sociology and Australian literary and cultural studies is brought together to revise accepted readings of Waten's texts and career, and to address significant absences or problems in Australian cultural history. Remembering Gregory Rogers Born 19 June 1957. Died 1 May 2013. In recognition of Greg Roger’s contribution to children’s literature, the CBCA Queensland Branch (http://www.cbcaqld.org) aims to raise $5000 so that his name can be listed in memoriam as a Major Donor to the CBCA Awards Foundation. Gregory Rogers was born in Brisbane and grew up in Coorparoo. He studied at the Queensland College of Art and worked as a graphic designer before taking up freelance illustration in1987. He illustrated many books, including Margaret Card’s Aunty Mary’s Dead Goat, Ian Trevaskis’s The Postman Race, Gary Crew’s Tracks and Lucy’s Bay, Libby Hathorn’s Way Home, and Nigel Gray’s Running Away From Benefactors Home. As well as being the first Australian illustrator to win the Kate Scholastic Australia, Allen & Unwin, Greenaway Medal for Way Home Greg also won a Parents’ Choice Laurie Copping OAM (in memoriam), Award in the U.S. and was shortlisted for the ABPA book design awards. Thyne Reid Trust No. 1. The first book he both wrote and illustrated was The Boy, the Bear, the Major Donors Baron, and the Bard published by Allen & Unwin in 2004. That same year Louise E Rorabacher wrote a book-length study - Marjorie Barnard and M Barnard Eldershaw, after agreeing not to write about Barnard's private life. This led to many studies of the pair's joint literary output and short biographical studies and much misinformation, from scholars beguiled into believing Barnard's stories which were often deliberately disseminated to protect the secrecy of the affair that dominated her life between 1934 and 1942. A re-examination of her life and work is now necessary because there have been huge misunderstandings about other aspects of Barnard's life, too. Her habit of telling imaginary stories denigrating her father, led to him being maligned by his daughter's interviewers. Marjorie's commonest accusation was of her father's meanness, starting with her student allowance, but if the changing value of money is taken into account, her allowance (for pocket money) was extremely generous compared to wages of the time. -

arts Article Cultural Tourism: Imagery of Arnhem Land Bark Paintings Informs Australian Messaging to the Post-War USA Marie Geissler Faculty of Law Humanities and the Arts, University of Wollongong, Wollongong, NSW 2522, Australia; [email protected] Received: 19 February 2019; Accepted: 28 April 2019; Published: 20 May 2019 Abstract: This paper explores how the appeal of the imagery of the Arnhem Land bark painting and its powerful connection to land provided critical, though subtle messaging, during the post-war Australian government’s tourism promotions in the USA. Keywords: Aboriginal art; bark painting; Smithsonian; Baldwin Spencer; Tony Tuckson; Charles Mountford; ANTA To post-war tourist audiences in the USA, the imagery of Australian Aboriginal culture and, within this, the Arnhem Land bark painting was a subtle but persistent current in tourism promotions, which established the identity and destination appeal of Australia. This paper investigates how the Australian Government attempted to increase American tourism in Australia during the post-war period, until the early 1970s, by drawing on the appeal of the Aboriginal art imagery. This is set against a background that explores the political agendas "of the nation, with regards to developing tourism policies and its geopolitical interests with regards to the region, and its alliance with the US. One thread of this paper will review how Aboriginal art was used in Australian tourist designs, which were applied to the items used to market Australia in the US. Another will explore the early history of developing an Aboriginal art industry, which was based on the Arnhem Land bark painting, and this will set a context for understanding the medium and its deep interconnectedness to the land. -
