A Heritage Study of the Gully Aboriginal Place, Katoomba, New South Wales
The full report can be obtained from the council offices at Katoomba and Springwood, or is available at all Blue Mountains City Council Libraries. A Heritage Study of the Gully Aboriginal Place, Katoomba, New South Wales A document prepared for the Blue Mountains City Council with the Assistance of the Department of Environment and Heritage by Allan Lance Heritage Consulting Australia Pty Ltd August 2005 Forward This Report was commissioned by Blue Mountains City Council as a step towards the appropriate understanding and management of the Aboriginal values of the Gully Aboriginal Place. The study was undertaken by Allan Lance of HCA. Financial assistance was provided by the Commonwealth Department of Environment and Heritage and support was provided on cultural heritage matters by the Department of Environment and Conservation (New South Wales). A steering committee was formed for the duration of this study and gave valuable input into the study’s direction. The broader Aboriginal Community, particularly past Gully residents and their descendants, participated signifi cantly in the fi eldwork and the interpretation of all recorded values. The results of this study will contribute to the Aboriginal community’s understanding of its heritage, to the broader community’s understanding of the Aboriginal signifi cance of the Gully and will assist the Blue Mountains City Council in its management of this very special place. 1. Introduction The Aboriginal Place found at the headwaters of the Upper Kedumba River Valley, in the heart of Katoomba, is known to past Aboriginal residents simply as ‘The Gully’. This fringe camp has important historical associations for those who lived there and whose families lived there, as it was a resource-rich refuge for those who had no other place to go. -

The Gully: Listening to the Stories of the Land
THE GULLY: LISTENING TO THE STORIES OF THE LAND The entire Greater Blue Mountains is one great gallery of Aboriginal culture. Within this land, The Gully in Katoomba is a dedicated Aboriginal Place under NSW law—the largest in the State, declared in May 2002 in recognition of the continuous occupation of the area by Aboriginal people until they were forcibly evicted in the nineteen-fifties. BEFORE THAT it had been a living place for Aboriginal people since time immemorial, with shelter, clean water and food. Before white settlement the traditional owners of The Gully – the Gundungurra and Darug peoples – used this place as a summer camp, described as ‘a sheltered, lush green corridor with abundant sweet water’. The Gully became ‘a haven for Darug and Gundungurra peoples in the late nineteenth century’ (Duggins), until settlement at the foot of the Mountains forced many Gundungurra and Darug people to resettle permanently in The Gully. It would become their ghetto. Local businessmen and the local council had other plans for this special place on the western flank of Katoomba and in 1946 an amusements park was set up with an old Catalina flying boat placed in the centre of the ornamental lake formed when the Katoomba Falls was dammed. The government bought the land in 1952 and a 2.1 km circuit for race meetings was opened by the Australian Racing Drivers Club. They called the race track Catalina Park. In the 60s it was used for top level motorsport but there were problems with fog causing delays and the track was very narrow and by the 80s it was only used for lap 50 Wendy Tsai: Craven A Nos. -
Orange Times Issue 2
The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust June / July 2014, Issue #2 Farewell Sir Jack 1926 - 2014 Along with the motorsport fraternity worldwide I was extremely saddened to th hear of Sir Jack’s recent passing on the 19 May. The McLaren family and Jack have shared a wonderful life-long friendship, starting with watching his early racing days in New Zealand, then Pop McLaren purchasing the Bobtail Cooper from Jack after the NZ summer racing season of 1957. For the following season of 1958, Jack made the McLaren Service Station in Remuera his base and brought the second Cooper with him from the UK for Bruce to drive in the NZIGP which culminated in Bruce being awarded the Celebrating 50 Years of “Driver to Europe”. Jack became his mentor and close friend and by 1959 McLaren Racing Bruce joined him as teammate for the Cooper Racing Team. The rest, as we say, is history but the friendship lived on and the BM Trust Following on from their Tasman Series was delighted to host Jack in New Zealand for a week of motorsport memories success, the fledgling BMMR Team set about in 2003 with Jack requesting that the priority of the trip was to be a visit to their very first sports car race with the Zerex see his “NZ Mum” Ruth McLaren, who, by then, was a sprightly 97 years old. th Special – on April 11 1964 at Oulton Park and I shared a very special hour with the two of them together and the love and this was a DNF/oil pressure. -

The First Elfin "Works" 1500 Chassis No. 625 Driver Frank Matich
The First Elfin "Works" 1500 Chassis No. 625 Driver Frank Matich In Late 1962 Garrie Cooper sent a number of Elfin products to the Sydney Motor show to display what the South Australian manufacturer was producing at that time. On the stand were 2 Formula Juniors, one with the normal 1100cc engine the other with 1475cc, a Clubman and a rolling chassis with gearbox fitted. At the conclusion of the Motor Show, Elfin invited all the leading drivers to Warwick Farm to test the 3 cars. The Elfin stand Sydney Motor Show later September 1962 SCW On the Test day quite a few of the leading drivers of the time turned up to sample what Elfin had produced. These included Johnny Martin, David McKay, Alan Ferguson, Charlie Smith, Doug Kelly, Bruce Polain, Arnold Glass, Peter Williamson and of course Frank Matich and others. In the end Garrie Cooper saw that Matich had got the most out of the cars that day and asked him to be their agent for NSW and to use the cars in competition to further expose Elfin to the wider racing fraternity. Elfin FJ 625 becomes the "Works" 1500 Driver Frank Matich After the test day, Garrie left 625 (now fitted with the 1500 engine) in Matich's care to run in the Hordern Trophy race in mid October. 627 returned with Garrie to the factory to have modifications made to it at Matich's suggestion. Apparently Frank had a few tricks he wanted to try in the other chassis and Garrie took it back to Adelaide to incorporate them. -

Kim has kindly supplied a report but a dearth of photos is evident. This is probably due to the fact that rarely were two FJ cars seen together – lost in a maze of more modern sports and racing cars, with different power and handling characteristics and driver capabilities and attitudes. The Phillip Island Classic is the Premier Historic Race Meeting in Australia, and well run by the VHRR with help from the Mini Club. Our cars were mixed up with M & O Sports and Racing (1961 – 1970) in a large field of 50 cars. Racing side by side with a Lola T70 and various wide treaded Sports Cars is not nice and the sooner we can achieve the numbers to race with similar cars, the happier we will all be.
