IAVWOPSG/7-WP/41 International Civil Aviation Organization 8/2/13 WORKING PAPER INTERNATIONAL AIRWAYS VOLCANO WATCH OPERATIONS GROUP (IAVWOPSG) SEVENTH MEETING Bangkok, Thailand, 18 to 22 March 2013 Agenda Item 5: Operation of the IAVW 5.1: Implementation of the IAVW, includingg the IAVW management reports VAAC WELLINGTON MANAGEMENT REPORT (Presented by New Zealand) SUMMARY Pursuant to Conclusion 1/2 of the IAVWOPSG/1 Meeting, VAAC Provider States were invited to provide a concise IAVW management report to be presented at every IAVWOPSG meeting coverinng the period elapsed since the previous meeting and addressing the main features of the IAVW operations, highlighting any recent developments and difficulties and future planned developments. The report prepared by New Zealand is presented for the group’s review and consideration. Action by the IAAVWOPSG is in paragraph 9. 1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 VAAC Wellington, operated by Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited (MetService), has remained operational for the reporting period with no outages. 1.2 Advisories have been issued in relation to siggnificant eruptive activity at New Zealand’s Mount Tongariro and White Island volcanoes. Advisories were issued for a brief period in response to reports of volcanic activity on Tofua Island in Tonga, which were subsequently discounted. 1.3 Twice weekly testing of VAAC operational procedures was carried out through the period. Signature Date: 01/07/15 Name: Dr Eleanor John Designation: Principal Supervisor ABSTRACT Samoan volcanism is tectonically controlled and is generated by tension-stress activities associated with the sharp bend in the Pacific Plate (Northern Terminus) at the Tonga Trench. The Samoan island chain dominated by a mixture of shield and post-erosional volcanism activities. The closed basin structures of volcanoes such as the Crater Lake Lanoto enable the entrapment and retention of a near-complete sedimentary record, itself recording its eruptive history. Crater Lanoto is characterised as a compound monogenetic and short-term volcano. A high proportion of primary tephra components were found in a core extracted from Crater Lake Lanoto show that Crater Lanoto erupted four times (tephra bed-1, 2, 3, and 4). -

LYNNE1 1 Geology Programme, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand SUMMARY – Sinter Island on Lake Ohakuri (10 m x 7 m, ~3 m above lake level) in the Orakei Korako geothermal area, Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, contains a large extinct vent, domal stromatolites and bedded sinter rich in microbial filaments. Despite its young age (456 ± 35 years BP), this ancient hot- spring deposit preserves the complete diagenetic sequence of silica phase mineralogies, confirmed by X- ray diffractometry, from opal-A to opal-CT to opal-C + quartz. Corresponding nano- to micron-scale morphologies include spheres and vitreous silica botryoids, bladed lepispheres, and merged irregular silica rods. Incipient ‘fuzzy’ quartz is represented by rows of criss-crossing rods/blades that are aligned along the c-axis, but showing the typical external habit of microcrystalline quartz. No microbial fabrics are evident in quartzose samples. The deposit also experienced spatially patchy dissolution, resulting in formation of unusual morphological features for some opal-A portions of the sinter. Three intervals of silicification (thin encrusting, thick botryoidal, cemented granular cavity-fill) occurred around filament clusters during alkali-chloride thermal discharge to create a moderately dense opaline deposit. -

New Zcaland 2. TAUPO VOLCANIC ZONE The Taupo Volcanic Zone Fig. 1) is the consequence of plate subduction beneath the North Island of New Zcaland. ABSTRACT The thin continental crust (-15 km, Stem and Davey, 1987) spreads at rates up to 18 (Darby and Williams, 1991) Silicic calderas and geothermal systems in Taupo Volcanic in active rifting and subsidence. Since c. 1.6 Ma, the Zone (TVZ) of New Zealand are spatially related. Eight calderas, central TVZ has been the most frequently active and productive active since 1.6 Ma, occupy 45% of the Boundaries of region of rhyolitic volcanism on earth (Houghton et al., 1994). calderas arc often speculative, but of 20 geothermal systems producing an estimated 10 - 15 of rhyolite, and considercd, 15 occur on or next to a caldera margin where there is subordinate dacite, andesite and basalt. Debate continues whether enhanced deep permeability: the best examples are at Haroharo TVZ is a migrating andesitic arc and zone of asymmetric crustal where systems occur at the intersection of volcanic lineations and spreading (eg. Stem, or an andesite-dacite arc with bimodal caldera embayments, and at Rotorua. Drillhole evidence supports rhyolite-basalt back arc (eg. Cole, 1990). Whichever is the case, a realignment of caldera margin through the Wairakei- it is a matter of observation that most geothermal fields are geothermal field. Four geothermal systems have no known contained within the area of rhyolite volcanism. -

Follow the estuary past a camping ground, a boat ramp & holiday baches until wooden steps lead up to the Findlay Street walkway. From Findlay Street, head left into Molesworth Drive until reaching Mangawhai Village. Then a right into Moir Street, left into Insley Street and across the estuary then left into Black Swamp Road. Follow this road until reaching Pacific Road which leads you through a forestry block to the beach and the next stage of Te Araroa. Bypass Note: You could obtain a boat ride across the estuary to the Mangawhai Spit to avoid the road walking section. Care of sand-nesting birds is required on this Scientific Wildlife Reserve - please stick to the shoreline. Just 1km south, a stream cuts across the beach and it can go over thigh height, as can other water crossings on this track. Follow the coast southwards for another 2km, then take the 1 track over Te Ārai Point. Once back on the beach, continue south for 12km (fording Poutawa Stream on the way) until you cross the Pākiri River then head inland to reach the end of Pākiri River Road.
