Some interesting fish species reported from this river are Barilus shacra, Garra annandalei, Psilorhynchoides pseudecheneis, Badis badis, Olyra longicoudata, Tor putitora, Labeo dero and Anguilla bengalensis . Fish diversity of Triyuga river is rich, thus further extensive study is essential for their conservation. In the present study, the structure and morphometrics of alimentary canal of Rasborine fishes (11 species belonging to 8 genera) are described in relation to their food and feeding habits. The general pattern of alimentary canal was found to be similar but according to their feeding habit some morphological features was showing dissimilarity. The pattern and length of alimentary canal indicated inter and intraspecific variations. The stomach content analysis revealed that Amblypharyngodon mola , Aspidoparia morar, Barilius bendelisis, Esomus danricus mainly depended on vegetable matter whereas Barilius barila Hamilton, Barilius barna Hamilton, Barilius vagra Hamilton, Branchydanio rerio , Danio devario Hamilton, Raiamas bola, Rasbora (Rasbora ) daniconius daniconius depended on animal matter. It has been observed that the rasborine fishes are predominantly larvivorous i.e. feeding on insect larvae except for Raiamas which is a carnivore. Fish Diversity of Haryana and Its Conservation Status

E-mail: [email protected] Received: September 24, 2015; Revised received: April 7, 2016; Accepted: June 5, 2016 Abstract: The present study on fish biodiversity of Haryana state was carried out during 2011 to 2014. A total number of 59 fish species inhabits the freshwaters of this state. Maximum number of fish species belonged to the order Cypriniformes (35) followed by the order Siluriformes (12) and Perciformes (8). The orders Beloniformes, Clupeiformes, Osteoglossiformes and Synbranchiformes were represented by only one species each. Out of 59 fish species, 2 are endangered, 11 vulnerable, 28 have lower risk of threat, 8 exotic and 4 fish species have lower risk least concern. The conservation status of six fish species has not been evaluated so far, hence they cannot be included in any of the IUCN categories at this moment. Family Cyprinidae alone contributed 32 fish species followed by Bagridae family. Fish species Parapsilorhynchus discophorus was observed for the first time in Haryana waters. This species is the native of Kaveri river basin, the occurrence of this species in river Yamuna may be attributed to some religious activity of people. A decline in fish diversity has been recorded from 82 species in 2004 to 59 species in the present study in the year 2014. -

It reaches up to 27.7 mm SL and differs from all other species of Schistura by the presence of a distinct red dot above the midlateral line before the caudal-fin base (not visible in preserved speci- mens), a very slender body and a white ventral side below a broad black midlateral stripe; the dorsal side of the snout dark grey, and the anus located close to the anal-fin origin. Schistura pawensis, new species, shares with S. rubrimaculata the small size, slender body and general pigmentation pattern and is considered as closely re- lated to S. rubrimaculata. Schistura pawensis differs from S. rubrimaculata in having fewer branched rays in caudal and dorsal fins, the anus at mid-distance between pelvic and anal fins, fewer pores in lateral line, the dorsal side of the snout white, and the red dot on the caudal peduncle smaller and less prominent. Small ornamental species are mostly preferable in aquarium industry. BK Mahapatra Gourami is one of the most valuable and popular in small ornamental fish world. In India presently 8 ICAR-Central Institute of indigenous Gourami species are very common and highly demanding. Ctenops nobilis is one of the Fisheries Education, Salt Lake highly demanding and important among the 8 indigenous Gourami species. It is the only known species City, Kolkata, India in its genus. The fish is mainly cold water species. The species is widely distributed but it is a naturally scarce species. As per IUCN Red list, 2010 status the species is assessed as Near Threatened for its J Maity Vidyasagar University, population declines in the wild. Very little data available of the fish resulting problems occur during Midnapore, West Bengal, India maintenance of the fish in aquarium. So the proper study on the fish, captive breeding and rearing procedure of the fish is very important to meet the increasing demand of the fish among aquarium hobbyist. -

APPLIED FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE (Effective from 2019 Admission onwards) 2 M.Sc. Applied Fisheries and Aquaculture Scope of the Programme The program is designed as a four semester, two year programme under the Credit and Semester System. The programme will cater to the higher study opportunity for under graduate programmes in the related fields, in this university and other universities within the country and abroad. The fishing industry is in need of highly skilled man power and this programme will create the necessary skill sets among the aspiring students. The general skill sets attained will relate to Biology, Capture, Culture and Management of fisheries. The focus areas of this programme are Aquaculture Technology, Fisheries Business Management, Fish Capture Technology and Fish Processing Technology. Semester I covers such aspects as Taxonomy of fishes, Biochemistry, Biophysics and Research Methodology and Biostatistics and Computer Applications. The practical paper includes topics from all the four theory papers. In Semester II, the topics covered are Ecology of Aquatic Ecosystems and Inland Aquaculture, Ornamental Fisheries, Genetics and Biotechnology and Health Management in Aquaculture. Only one practical paper is assigned for this semester covering the experimental aspects of inland aquaculture, ornamental fisheries and health management. In Semester III, three theory courses are offered including Mariculture, Fish Nutrition and Microbiology & Quality Management. Two practical papers are offered in this semester. The first practical is on Aquaculture and Fish Nutrition while the second practical is on Fishery Microbiology and Quality Control. In addition the students have to undergo training in a reputed hatchery to understand the nuances of breeding and rearing of aquarium fishes and food fishes. -
Diversity of Fishes Across Hydrological Basins and Elevational Gradients in Eastern Bhutan: a Preliminary Analysis

ABSTRACT: Bhutan’s water resources span a tremendous elevational gradient and are home to a diverse ichthyofauna. However, much of the aquatic biodiversity remains understudied and little is known about the ecology of native species. In an effort to strengthen Bhutan’s existing fishery database, the National Research and Development Centre for Riverine and Lake Fisheries, Haa, conducted an ichthyofauna assessment from 2017 to 2019 at 496 sampling stations spread across three hydrological basins namely Aiechhu, Manas and Nyera-Amachhu in eastern Bhutan. A total of 108 fish species, representing 47 genera, 19 families and seven orders were recorded during the study. The highest number of species and endemic fish were found concentrated along the Aiechhu hydrological basin, particularly the Aiechhu proper (Maochhu) and below <500 meters elevation. Based on these findings, the Aiechhu proper appears to be best choice for retaining a free-flowing river in Bhutan and plans for future hydropower developments in elevation <500 meters above sea level should be reconsidered. Terrestrial Protected Areas and Managed Reaches Conserve Threatened Freshwater Fish in Uttarakhand, India

Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, India ABSTRACT Terrestrial protected areas and river reaches managed by local stakeholders can act as management tools for biodiversity conservation. These areas have the potential to safeguard fish species from stressors such as over-fishing, habitat degradation and fragmentation, and pollution. To test this idea, we conducted an evaluation of the potential for managed and unmanaged river reaches, to conserve threatened freshwater fish species. The evaluation involved sampling fish diversity at 62 sites in major rivers in Uttarakhand, India (Kosi, Ramganga and Khoh rivers) both within protected (i.e. sites within Corbett and Rajaji Tiger Reserves and within managed reaches), and unprotected areas (i.e. sites outside tiger reserves and outside managed reaches). In total, 35 fish species were collected from all sites, including two mahseer (Tor) species. Protected areas had larger individual fish when compared to individuals collected outside of protected areas. Among all sites, lower levels of habitat degradation were found inside protected areas. Non -protected sites showed higher impacts to water quality (mean threat score: 4.3/5.0), illegal fishing (4.3/5.0), diversion of water flows (4.5/5.0), clearing of riparian vegetation (3.8/5.0), and sand and boulder mining (4.0/5.0) than in protected sites.
