Report to the Friends of Music
Summer, 2020 Dear Friends of the Music Department, The 2019-20 academic year has been like no other. After a vibrant fall semester featur- ing two concerts by the Parker Quartet, the opening of the innovative Harvard ArtLab featuring performances by our faculty and students, an exciting array of courses and our inaugural department-wide throwdown–an informal sharing of performance projects by students and faculty–we began the second semester with great optimism. Meredith Monk arrived for her Fromm Professorship, Pedro Memelsdorff came to work with the Univer- sity Choir as the Christoph Wolff Scholar, Esperanza Spalding and Carolyn Abbate began co-teaching an opera development workshop about Wayne Shorter’s Iphigenia, and Vijay Iyer planned a spectacular set of Fromm Players concerts and a symposium called Black Speculative Musicalities. And then the world changed. Harvard announced on March 10, 2020 that due to COVID-19, virtual teaching would begin after spring break and the undergraduates were being sent home. We had to can- cel all subsequent spring events and radically revise our teaching by learning to conduct classes over Zoom. Our faculty, staff, and students pulled together admirably to address the changed landscape. The opera workshop (Music 187r) continued virtually; students in Vijay Iyer’s Advanced Ensemble Workshop (Music 171) created an album of original mu- sic, “Mixtape,” that is available on Bandcamp; Meredith Monk created a video of students in her choral class performing her work in progress, Fields/Clouds, and Andy Clark created an incredible performance of the Harvard Choruses for virtual graduation that involved a complicated process of additive recording over Zoom. -

A todos, muito obrigado! 3 Resumo Esta dissertação tem como foco principal a abordagem à interpretação em tempo real sobre material sonoro pré-gravado, num contexto performativo. Neste caso particular, material sonoro é entendido como música, que consiste numa pulsação regular e definida. O objetivo desta investigação é compreender os diferentes modelos de organização referentes a esse material e, consequentemente, apresentar uma solução em forma de uma aplicação orientada para a performance ao vivo intitulada Reap. Importa referir que o material sonoro utilizado no software aqui apresentado é composto por músicas inteiras, em oposição às pequenas amostras (samples) recorrentes em muitas aplicações já existentes. No desenvolvimento da aplicação foi adotada a análise estatística de descritores aplicada ao material sonoro pré-gravado, de maneira a retirar segmentos que permitem uma nova reorganização da informação sequencial originalmente contida numa música. Através da utilização de controladores de matriz com feedback visual, o arranjo e distribuição destes segmentos são alterados e reorganizados de forma mais simplificada. -

Music 80C History and Literature of Electronic Music Tuesday/Thursday, 1-4PM Music Center 131 Instructor: Madison Heying Email: [email protected] Office Hours: By Appointment Course Description: This course is a survey of the history and literature of electronic music. In each class we will learn about a music-making technique, composer, aesthetic movement, and the associated repertoire. Tests and Quizzes: There will be one test for this course. Students will be tested on the required listening and materials covered in lectures. To be prepared students must spend time outside class listening to required listening, and should keep track of the content of the lectures to study. Assignments and Participation: A portion of each class will be spent learning the techniques of electronic and computer music-making. Your attendance and participation in this portion of the class is imperative, since you will not necessarily be tested on the material that you learn. However, participation in the assignments and workshops will help you on the test and will provide you with some of the skills and context for your final projects. Assignment 1: Listening Assignment (Due June 30th) Assignment 2: Field Recording (Due July 12th) Final Project: The final project is the most important aspect of this course. The following descriptions are intentionally open-ended so that you can pursue a project that is of interest to you; however, it is imperative that your project must be connected to the materials discussed in class. You must do a 10-20 minute in class presentation of your project. You must meet with me at least once to discuss your paper and submit a ½ page proposal for your project. -

◊◊ THE OBERLIN COLLEGE CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC PRESENTS ◊◊ Talbert ronic Festival March 2-4, 2017 Oberlin, Ohio Dear Friends, The writer Bill Bryson observed that “few things last for more than a generation in America.” Indeed, even in the slow-to-change world of academic institutions, it is often the case that non-traditional programs or departments come and go in a decade or two. And yet we gather this weekend in honor of John Talbert’s retirement to celebrate the sustained energy and success of the TIMARA Department as it approaches the 50th anniversary of its origins. Our longevity has a lot to do with our adaptability, and our adaptability over the past 38 years has a lot to do with John. Even as he walks out the door, John remains a step ahead, always on the lookout for new methods and technologies but also wise in his avoidance of superficial trends. Take a moment this weekend to consider the number and variety of original compositions, artworks, performances, installations, recordings, instrument designs, and other projects that John has influenced and help bring into being during his time at Oberlin. All the while, John has himself designed and built literally rooms full of unique and reliable devices that invite student and faculty artists to express themselves with sonic and visual media. Every bit of the teaching and learning that transpires each day in TIMARA is influenced by John and will continue to be for years to come. Even when he knows better (which by now is just about always), he is willing to trust his colleagues, humor us faculty and our outlandish requests, and let students make personal discoveries through experimentation. -

AOS 2: Music in the 20th Century Serialism Background Information to Five Orchestral Pieces Five Orchestral Pieces 1909 by Arnold Schoenberg is a set of atonal pieces for full orchestra. Each piece lasts between one to five minutes and they are not connected to one another by the use of any musical material. Richard Strauss requested that Schoenberg send him some short orchestral pieces with the possibility of them gaining some attention from important musical figures. Schoenberg hadn’t written any orchestral pieces since 1903 as he had been experimenting with and developing his ideas of atonality in small scale works. He had had a series of disappointments as some of his works for both chamber orchestra and larger ensembles had been dismissed by important musical figures as they did not understand his music. As a result of this Schoenberg withdrew further into the small group of like minded composers e.g. The Second Viennese School. Schoenberg uses pitches and harmonies for effect not because they are related to one another. He is very concerned with the combinations of different instrumental timbres rather than melody and harmony as we understand and use it. Schoenberg enjoyed concealing things in his music; he believed that the intelligent and attentive listener would be able to decipher the deeper meanings. Schoenberg believed that music could express so much more than words and that words detract from the music. As a result of this belief titles for the Five Orchestral Pieces did not appear on the scores until 13 years after they had been composed. -
