NEWSLETTER / AUTUMN 2019 Welcome from our Chairman Adam O'Neill Welcome to the Autumn newsletter... Busy times at BFDG HQ with the management team, supported by the committee, working flat out on bringing you the new the bigger and better BFDG Awards 2019. Lots of work is going on behind the scenes, and members will be able to take part in the first vote from all the entries at the beginning of November. Although the BFDG Awards are an important event with the opportunity to promote and celebrate our members and their work The Guild is much more than just the Awards. There is a steady flow of new members joining us all the time, we have established links with the BECTU Art Department committee (of which I am a member) to discuss the rate card and the IR35/Schedule D liability issue, which will impact us all from April 2020, we continue to run regular events which are open to all members, there will be another Q&A coming up in November, and we are consulting with other Guilds regarding the future direction of the Joint Guild Screenings. Further afield, we are a member of ARTSCENICO and are keeping in touch regarding their recent discussions on sustainability and furthering links to the other European Guilds. Regarding the BFDG committee:- Anyone can become a member of the committee, it is open to all grades, all ages, genders, shade of hair colour, shoe size, etc. A recent point I made regarding this may have been misunderstood, so I would like to clarify: The younger committee members are the future, and are therefore very important, but I don’t want more senior members to feel they are not welcome to contribute, that would be wrong as well. -
Digital Compositing Is an Essential Part of Visual Effects, Which Are
Digital compositing is an essential part of visual effects, which are everywhere in the entertainment industry today—in feature fi lms, television commercials, and even many TV shows. And it’s growing. Even a non- effects fi lm will have visual effects. It might be a love story or a comedy, but there will always be something that needs to be added or removed from the picture to tell the story. And that is the short description of what visual effects are all about— adding elements to a picture that are not there, or removing something that you don’t want to be there. And digital compositing plays a key role in all visual effects. The things that are added to the picture can come from practically any source today. We might be add- ing an actor or a model from a piece of fi lm or video tape. Or perhaps the mission is to add a spaceship or dinosaur that was created entirely in a computer, so it is referred to as a computer generated image (CGI). Maybe the element to be added is a matte painting done in Adobe Photoshop®. Some elements might even be created by the compositor himself. It is the digital compositor that takes these dis- parate elements, no matter how they were created, and blends them together artistically into a seam- less, photorealistic whole. The digital compositor’s mission is to make them appear as if they were all shot together at the same time under the same lights with the same camera, and then give the shot its fi nal artistic polish with superb color correction. -

I thought it needed a simple, honest, "70's" kind of natural name, a pure name, not a stupid, gimmicky name like "Steadicam." It was Ed DiGiulio's suggestion, which I hated immediately. Of course, as he predicted, the word has now become simply a word, a noble word, meaning exactly what it says, and in fact , I am daily (well, yearly...), grateful that he prevailed and that we didn't call it the bloody Brown Stabilizer! In any event, I recently unearthed some early pictures, and have been inspired to relate the one-and-only true version of the birth of our noble gadget. A simple, silent (no dialogue) scene where somebody walks into the shot, does something and then leaves is perfect. Once you’ve shot your first film, watch it. What do you like/dislike about it? Save this first attempt. We’ll be asking you to return to it later. (If you have already done this and saved your films, you don’t need to do this again.) Professional filmmakers divide scenes into shots. They set up their camera and frame the first shot, film the action and then stop recording. This process is repeated for each new shot until the scene is completed. The clips are then put together in the edit to make one continuous scene. Whatever equipment you work with, if you use professional techniques, you can produce quality films that look cinematic. The table below gives a description of the main shots, angles and movements used by professional filmmakers. An explanation of the effects they create and the information they can give the audience is also included.
