ASF Priority Activities

Community outreach ASF has always taken a centre stage in responding to social development by engag- ing on issues that are affecting the lives of children, young people, old people and those who are less fortunate. In all the provincial conferences that ASF had in the past 10years the PEC made it a point that there is an outreach taking place in the community that we hosting our conference. This project has been successful as we have touched many lives and this we do by dedicating our time, skills and knowl- edge & love for our communities. Outreach is one of the programs that must be car- Outreach ried out by all the An‟socs and regions and we have seen it happening successfully.

Voluntary Counselling and Testing VCT is an important strategy for HIV Literacy & prevention and access to treat- ment, care and support services. In 2007 a resolution was passed that during our pro- vincial conference VCT must form part of the provincial Conference program. This was done in order to encourage ASF members to live a positive life style and lead by examples. We believe that knowing our status will assist us in taking good care of our lives and protecting our loved ones. VCT has been successful during confer- ences as ASF members tested in numbers. ASF member are also been encouraged to Liaison Bishop testing do continuous testing and not wait for the provincial conference.

“To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting Spiritual Growth and Development sentence or quote from the story here.” One of the objectives of ASF is to proclaim the gospel of Christ and you can only proclaim the gospel of Christ if you know who is Christ and His doings. An‟soc are always encouraged to have regular bible studies and revivals in order to discuss, share good news and revive each other from the bible and to be able to go out and make disciple and most of all to grow spiritually. Bible studies and revivals are also encouraged on the regional level. It is also an ASF culture during provincial confer- ences to start our business day with Bible studies conducted by chaplains.

Social Events As ASF we acknowledge that we are coming from different back ground and we need to learn and understand our different cultures. This we do by having social Bible Study gatherings like picnics, movie nights, beauty contests and many other creative ways each region develop to break the ice between the members etc.

Developing Mature Christian Leaders Our Mission statements states that we seek to develop mature Christians leader and we have seen members of ASF going to the corporate world being matured and equipped and we manage to achieve this through having workshops such as leader- ship, HIV/AIDS, gender workshops and other workshops like Anglicanism and cul- tural workshops that respond to the challenges that are facing students and young people in our Institutions, countries and communities. ASF also encourages its membership to get involved in Diocesan and parish events.

Creating a Home away from Home

We always seek to create a home away from home for everyone who joins ASF. Home away from home is a place where you feel welcomed, loved and a place Talent show where you will never go hungry and you always supported in everything you do. Chaplains are always there as our parents Page 3 ASFACTS December 2011

ASF Free State spend their time with the kids

The Outreach was held at Hoffman Square in Bloemfontein, we were offer- ing free cooked food for the needy street kids. We did this to show them our sincere respect and care as not all of them left their families for unnecessary reasons. Some of them had lost their parents at an early stage so they do not have guardians to take care of them or their guardians do not take care of them properly. The kids were happy for our presence and the offerings as they felt and saw that even if abandoned by their families, there are people out there who still care for them. We as the ASF members really enjoyed spending time with the kids as we tried to step into their own shoes to feel what they are going through and their life experiences.

The US is great.. But I miss you!

Ann K Urinoski

On Sunday, 30 October, I had the pleasure of attending an African Evensong service at the Diocese of New Jersey‟s cathedral. The focus of the service, which had been arranged by a special diocesan committee, was to raise funds and raise awareness of the need in Darfur. The Reverend Petero Sabune preached an amazing sermon on African identity; he grew up in Uganda and currently serves as the chair of the Africa desk at our national church. Most of the prayers and songs were not familiar to me – except for “Siyahamba…”which sounded strange to me when we sang it mostly in English. It was a beautiful service that made me proud to be an Anglican in a diocese that‟s so aware of its distant corners, but mostly it made me miss ASF even more than I already do each day. It was only after the service was over that I real- ized that part of the reason that I went there was to find you all again – to recapture the power of your worship and your choruses. I love coming home to my church here, but I deeply miss worshiping with you! I‟ve been blessed with some warm and powerful welcomes upon my return to the US. I missed my family and my friends and the Eucharist service in the red Episcopal prayer book. I‟ve enjoyed a bit of travel around my home country and driving on the right side of the road. I am still enjoying catching up with my loved ones here, and I am proud to tell them my stories of South Africa – of you - of the love and the people and the Church and the ASF!

An’soc Turfloop getting involved

It is always good to see young people dedicating their lives to God, making “Him” their first and last, making praise and worship a lifestyle. ASF has been gifted with young spiritual leaders and that is the greatest love above all. Our theme for this year is “your constant love is better than life itself” from psalm 63:3. God has really blessed us and what could be better than his love? Not even life it- self!! An‟soc Turfloop has reviewed “a home away from home” to “a spiritual home away from home.” It is not just a home where we have fun and have normal services without learning anything, it‟s a home where future leaders are groomed, and otherwise it would be useless. This year we banged it with an opening function to welcome our young, beautiful and active new members as well as old members. The event was successful, an‟socers showed up in numbers and our new members showed dedication to building and growing our federation, that‟s a blessing from God. At first we had problems with chairs but that did not stop us from praising God. We then went to the pond for or welcoming function which was ummmmmmm...... By: Kate Mogale Limpopo Regional MPO

Christianity is a verb

Christianity (from the Greek word Xpiotoc, Khristos. “Christ”, literally “anointed one”) Christianity is one of many religious opinions. We often claim to be Christians because we have certain duties and responsibilities in our churches, because we believe that Jesus is the way, because we pray or even because we are ASFer‟s. Christianity is rather a gift from God through Jesus Christ, a gift that none of us is worthy of receiving. We do not necessarily have to do certain things to be Christians but have faith in Jesus. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 4: 8-9). This then means that without faith it is indeed impossible to please God.

“For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5) We do not become Christians in certain places or particular times but being a child of God (Christian) means living our lives in a manner that Christ would have or lived, living our lives according to the teaching of Jesus Christ. We have shifted our Christianity and spirituality to the gifts of the Spirit and anointing and have forgotten the basics and fundamentals of being children of God. We weigh each others‟ gifts. For example, Rev S prays more power- fully than Rev S, who preaches better, we focus on the messenger than the message itself. We focus on who God has used to talk to us rather than what God said to us. The Gospel according to St Matthew reminds us: Not everyone who says to Me: Lord! Lord! will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.

Many will say to Me on that day: Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name and driven out demons in Your name and done many mighty works in Your name? And then I will say to them openly (publicly): I never knew you; depart from Me, you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands] (Matthew 7:21-23). Therefore brothers and sisters let us go back to our Christian roots, let us go back to God, let us go back to being children of God. A child forgives and forgets. A child cries to his/ her parents. A child is pure-hearted and inno- cent. Can we not be like children also by forgiving those who sin against us, crying to our Father in heaven, and being pure-hearted and innocent through confession and receiving the Holy Spirit? Let us go and act out Christianity because Christianity is a verb: a lifestyle to be lived by all mankind. Christian- ity is not dependent on race, colour, background or even gender because we are all one in Christ (Galatians 3:28). Let us be ambassadors of Christ. Let us go out to the world to love and serve the Lord. Above all, let the world see God in us and through us.

The following two years, I still could not make it as I had to be involved in internship and also needed to come home in Swaziland and that would have been a mean feat coming from a remote conference centre and having to use many public transport routes.

My first ASF conference was in Mozambique in 1999 when I was a final year engineering student. I was An‟soc Co-chairperson at UCT then and highly involved in the preparations. It was an awesome conference though we had the naughty ASFers from WC, GP & EC who kept on causing chaos during proceedings. I must say it was quite an experience for me seeing people in a formal church gathering drinking until they even got drunk and rowdy. The conference in general was a success, all the bible studies, services, outreach and making new friends. But I still felt there was great room for spiritual improvement and relevancy and sought to help in advancing change in ASF to truly make it a home away from home and help it grow as a Christian organization that would build future leaders rather than people who went to conference to find a chance to drink and dance all night long.

The following year, I was an incoming Chairperson of Western Cape which was a very problematic region such that during conference (Swaziland ASF 40th celebration) some of their actions led to some people crying and getting hurt. I again sought to help WC become a force to be reckoned with in a positive manner. It was difficult having seen that it was a dominant and vocal member of the ASF but was also the least loved region not just in ASF but even in the Province. It was tedious bringing the institutions of the Western Cape together, but through wonderful interaction and events, we built it to be a wonderful and harmonious region…

This might have been the springboard that led to the election of the outgoing WC chairperson and many other WC Chairpersons to follow to become President. They saw how we grew spiritually and turned around and wanted to see the same growth in ASF. ASF was a bigger challenge for me as a President, as at that time, we lost our Organiser through a car accident and had to advertise for and hire a new one…a very tough activity with politics involved. By God‟s mercies, we manage to get a very good replacement (Sabelo) who helped us build ASF even better. During that time we also started IKON shop to try and build up funds for ASF, attended PSC, funerals, etc. It was the inspi- rations of Father Richard who however passed away shortly after that period due to cancer that made us work hard to improve the finances of ASF. It was a very sad loss for me having lost two people who were working to build up ASF in a very short period.

One of the most memorable Conferences was that which was held in George (Eastern Cape hosted Conference). The place was awesome, the services great and the programme fun filled. I never had enough time for people as I was ever busy being the President and having a girlfriend from Gauteng… I may be biased towards this conference coz I was the president then, but I guess all the events that took place were sometimes happening for the first time… Oh one that I remember very well was the issue of the cross. The President right before me (Papi) disappeared before conference and disappeared with the cross, so Father Richard and I had to shop for a new cross in Cape Town and we found one which I wore at the conference and handed over to Richenda. I was saddened to hear that it has also disap- peared, but was glad that I did hand over my presidential cross without mishap. Continuing on page 13...

A Sexist Federation?

A Sexist Federation? Ever wondered why ASF ladies are not getting into leadership? I don‟t know if it‟s just me But it seems like the „S‟ in ASF stands for Sexism Sexism… a.k.a. Sex or Gender discrimination “It is defined as the application of the belief or attitude that there are characteristics implicit to one’s gender that indirectly affects one’s abilities in unrelated areas. It is a form of discrimination or devaluation based on a person’s sex, with such attitudes being based on beliefs on traditional stereotypes of gender roles. The term sexism is most often used in relation with discrimination against women.” (Wikipedia) Discrimination against women… The male domination in the federation serves as proof

Taking a look at the PEC…

President: MALE, General Secretary: MALE, General Treasurer: MALE, MPO: MALE Chairperson GP/MP, EC, WC, LESOTHO, SWAZILAND, NW, FS, MOZAMBIQUE: ALL MALE!!! Only 20% of the PEC is females (The GET, and chairperson Limpopo and KZN). Big ups to you girls.

I was at the FS regional conference earlier this year where they elected their executive committee. There was only one girl in the PEC. Can you imagine the level of testosterone there?

It seems clear to me. The Sexism… And funny enough, the discrimination isn‟t coming from the guys. It is us, the women, who discriminate against ourselves The opportunity to stand for portfolios is given to us, but we are just saying no… we can‟t. We are women. We can‟t be leaders of men… We just can‟t Men are superior “It‟s a Man‟s World”… they say What??? Says who??? I know the Bible doesn‟t Believe it or not Look… “God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them. Male and Female he created them. *Genesis 1:27* Females are also made in the image of God. Men are not better than you sisters. Let me tell you what Paul said when he was writing to the Galatians. He said: “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there MALE or FEMALE, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” And that is verses 26-28.

Need I say more? So many women across the globe have fought for us to have equal rights as men. But we are sitting and throwing it at their faces. Come on ladies. Let‟s show the guys that we can also do the job. You also have the ability to do wonders. You have the powers to transform this federation. Have you noticed that there is „MALE‟ in every FEMALE??? There is a reason for that. It is because every woman has a man in them. No pun intended. Meaning whatever men can do, women can also do, and better. We are men and more. We are women.

Put your heels on, push your chest out, with your chin up, and whip your hair back and forth. You can do this! You are strong like that!!! Let ASF be ASF and not „ASF‟ Wa thintha umfazi, wa thintha imbhokodo (strike a woman, strike a rock) Tumelo „„TheVoice‟‟ Ditshetelo

ASF Angola visit South Africa

Joaquim Massala who is a student in Angola visited South Africa in September 2011. Angola forms part of ASF in ACSA and t has been a challenging journey to get them on board. With the work that has been done by Ann a contact was created. 3 Representatives from Angola were supposed to be part of the ASF 51st provincial conference in Limpopo but due to visa application process they were not able attend. His visit was to come and learn about ASF, see how ASF operates and how they can revive ASF Angola as its currently not functioning. The representative of Angola first visited ASF office in Cape Town where he was shown how ASF operates, he was also taken to HOPE Africa and other institution in the western cape region.
