The Los Angeles Times has said of Mercury, “Imagine a combination of Madonna’s feral sensuality with Tina Turner’s lithe energy and put it in a package that possesses the elegance of Catherine Zeta- Jones—and you still haven’t completely described either the full range of the character of Mercury’s stunning impact.” Carnaval Eletrônico will take place in the Howard Gilman Opera House (Peter Jay Sharp building, 30 Lafayette Ave) on October 22 at 7:30pm. Tickets, priced at $20, 30, 35, and 40, may be purchased by calling BAM Ticket Services at 718.636.4100 or by visiting www.bam.org. more... Daniela Mercury 2 About the artist Mercury started her musical career in Salvador, Bahia, a Brazilian melting pot of Afro-Latino culture. As a teenager she began singing bossa nova in nightclubs, soon after she became the reigning star of the trios elétricos bands that perform on flatbed trucks during Carnaval. After a brief stint in the band of Gilberto Gil, she started her solo career with the popular 1991 single “Swing da Cor” (“Color Swing”). But it was her debut CD, O Canto da Cidade (The Song of the City)—which included songs of love and social criticism—that helped her become the first artist to sell more than one million records in Brazil. Since then she has released seven albums. Released in 2004, Carnaval Eletrônico includes guest appearances from some of the most important Brazilian producers and DJs on the electronic scene, including Carlinhos Brown, Gilberto Gil, and Lenine. The CD fuses Daniela’s voice with the diverse styles in electronic music, including Techno, Drum and Bass, House, Lounge and Dub. In concert, Mercury is a veritable whirlwind of sound and motion. The New York Times has described her as “a dynamo who sings and dances through songs from Bahia, Brazil, taking up questions of race, culture and romance with more live, nonstop energy than a dozen lip-synching MTV acts.” Credits Deutsche Bank is the presenting sponsor for Carnaval Eletrônico.
