We planned this symposium as part of We are grateful for the support of our generous sponsors. Their investment in our 50th anniversary our 50th anniversary celebration, although our goal goes far beyond the work of FPG. The symposium is organized symposium is a testament to their commitment to improving the lives of children and families within around three focus areas in which FPG investigators have made primary contributions in the past: early care and North Carolina, across the nation, and around the world. The ideas and opinions expressed by symposium education; race, ethnicity, linguistic and cultural diversity; and children with disabilities and their families. National presenters and participants are theirs alone. Our sponsors do not necessarily endorse any policies or leaders in these areas will reflect on past work as well as the current state of the field in research, knowledge utiliza- positions set forth during this symposium. tion (i.e., professional development, implementation science, and technical assistance), and social policy. Small group sessions will allow you to engage these leaders in discussion about points raised in their papers and to offer points of your own. The papers also will set the context for a very important set of discussions we will have on the second day of the symposium, which will focus on future directions for research, knowledge utilization, and social policy in each of our focus areas. Our primary goal for this symposium is to set the agenda for future work in each of these areas. And, to achieve this goal, we will need each participant to reflect on the ideas and information presented, engage in discussion with the speakers, and be bold in thinking about next steps for the field. Great appreciation goes to all the individuals who have helped this symposium come about. Don Stedman was the leading and early advocate for the 50th anniversary events, and Stephanie Ridley has been the primary coordina- tor par excellence. The 50th Anniversary Symposium Planning Committee members jointly planned the structure and content of the symposium. The 50th Anniversary Honorary Committee members provided broad support and leadership that has allowed the symposium to happen. The national leaders have offered up their expertise and expe- rience in the papers they will be presenting. And, in advance, we thank all of you as participants, who offer your time, thought, and engagement in this process. We look forward to this being a stimulating, provocative, and interesting two days; but more importantly, we are hoping the outcome will contribute to future directions for the field—which will in turn advance knowledge and enhance lives for many years to come. —Sam Odom, FPG Director 50th Anniversary Platinum ($50,000) Ken Dodge & Claudia Jones Symposium Planning 50th Anniversary Vice Chancellor for Research, Frank & Renee Floyd The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Tommy & Donna Haddock Committee Honorary Committee Ron & Susann Haskins Silver ($10,000) Kate B.
