A Reading from Shaikpet Sarai Qutb Shahi, Hyderabad
hyderabad | Sriganesh Rajendran A READING FROM SHAIKPET SARAI QUTB SHAHI, HYDERABAD Serai: The usual meaning in India is that of a building for the accommodation of travellers with their pack-animals; consisting of an enclosed yard with chambers around it. (Hobson-Jobson, 1903) A large building for the accommodation of travellers, common in Eastern countries. The word is Persian and means in that language, ‘a place, the king’s court, a large edifice’; hence karavan-serai, by corruption caravanserie, i.e. place of rest of caravans. The erection of these buildings is considered highly meritorious by Hindus as well as Mohammedans, who frequently endow them with rents for their support. Over the Years
Over the Years Indra Rai Sharma Over the Years -A Photo Autobiography In 2010 before going to US, I had been going through my old papers. As it appeared, I had wished to pen down my autobiography long back. In my diary on February 10, 1963, I had written that if I would ever write my autobiography, I would caption it ‘My Life and Dreams’. In 1997 again, in my acceptance letter to the notice regarding my impending retirement that I sent on June 23, to Mr. A. Sankara Narayanan, Executive Director, M/S Hindustan Motors, I wrote: “I wish I could pen down my years at HM some day and hope that it would provide useful insight for our budding engineers as Lee Iacocca’s biography or the book ’On a clear day you can see General Motors’ provided to millions of it readers.’ I knew that I was not that great a name in HM or industry, though I aspired to be one. Perhaps I didn’t select the right profession or I couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity that I got to convert the same to become big. I remember my teasing of my grandmother and later on my mother in school days by telling them time and again that they should not expect me to do routine household work, as I would be a big man. Later on I joked with some close friends and their wives that one day I would get into number 1 Rajpath. I meant Rastrapati Bhawan. I failed to become as great or big as I wanted but I did work very hard for every assignment that I got. -

Pakistan Connection Diasporas @ BBC World Service Audience
Pakistan Connection Diasporas @ BBC World Service Audience Research Report Authors: Marie Gillespie, Sadaf Rivzi, Matilda Andersson, Pippa Virdee, Lucy Michael, Sophie West A BBC World Service / Open University Research Partnership 1 Foreword What does a shop owner in Bradford have in common with a graduate from Princeton USA, a construction worker in Bahrain and a banker in the City of London? All are users of the bbcurdu.com website, and all are part of the global Pakistani diaspora. The term diaspora is used to describe the global dispersion of migrant groups of various kinds. Diasporas are of growing economic, political and cultural significance. In a world where migration, geopolitical dynamics, communication technologies and transport links are continually changing, it is clear that culture and geography no longer map neatly onto one another. Understanding diaspora groups inside and outside its base at Bush House, London, is ever more important for the BBC World Service, too. Diaspora audiences are increasingly influencing the way the BBC conceives and delivers output. For example, over 60% of the weekly users of bbcurdu.com are accessing the site from outside the subcontinent, and this proportion is rising. The same trend has been observed for other BBC language websites. (See BBC World Agenda, September 2008.) The research presented here is based on a unique partnership between BBC World Service Marketing Communication and Audiences (MC&A) and The Open University. It was funded primarily by MC&A but it was also generously supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) though the Diasporas, Migration and Identities Research Programme, which funded a project entitled ‘Tuning In: Diasporic Contact Zones at BBC World Service’ (Grant Award reference AH/ES58693/1).
