From 1983 to 1987, two teams of scientists and engineers worked to overcome the technical, financial, and geographic obstacles to set up an email connection between China and the interna- tional CSNET. One team was centered around Werner Zorn at Karlsruhe University in the Federal Republic of Germany. The other team was under the general guidance of Wang Yuenfung at the In- stitute for Computer Applications (ICA) in the Peo- ple’s Republic of China. The project succeeded based on the scientific and technical skill and friendship, resourcefulness and dedication of the members of both teams. The first successful email message was sent on Sept 20, 1987 from Beijing to computer scien- tists in Germany, the U.S. and Ireland. How the lost e-mail message “Across the Great Wall…” brought people together Werner Zorn, Berlin; Jay Hauben, New York; Ann-Marie Plubell, Washington D.C. (08.02.2014, 10:30 MET-WZ) I. General Overview The famous e-mail message “Across the Great Wall we can reach every corner in the world” has come to stand for China’s entry into the Internet community. It was typed in on Sep. 14 and sent out on Sep. 20, 1987. There were thirteen signers of that message. Six were from a German team and seven from a Chinese team. When Jay Hauben did online research in 2004 about the first e-mail message it took him mostly to web sites in China. The story told there gave most credit for the China-CSNET connection to a Chinese engineer, Qian Tian Bai but his name was not on the original e-mail message. Also missing from the history on the websites in China was any credit to Professor Wang Yuen Fung whose name headed the Chinese team or to Professor Werner Zorn whose name headed the German team. Fifteen years passed, before the first attempts were made to bring more light into the past of the adolescent Chinese Internet. All three authors of this paper became involved and now try to outline how that e-mail brought people together, not only in researching the history later, but also from the very first moment after the e-mail being sent from Beijing over Karlsruhe to key persons in the US and Europe, who distributed the mail within the inner circle of decision makers in the emerging Internet. -

Eine Kommunikationsrevolution wird 30! Erste deutsche Internet E-Mail Am 03.08.1984 um 10.14 Uhr kam an der Universität Karlsruhe (TH) die erste Internet E-Mail in Deutschland an. Sie begrüßte die Karlsruher Informatiker zum Anschluss an das US-Amerikanische Computer-Netzwerk CSNET. Der Grundstein dazu wurde bereits 1982 vom Karlsruher Professor Werner Zorn durch den Projektantrag „Interkonnektion von Netzen“ gelegt. Deutschland war somit gemeinsam mit Israel die erste Nation, die an das amerikanische CSNET angeschlossen wurde. 1989 folgte dann mit dem ebenfalls von Professor Zorn aufgebauten Xlink die erste deutsche Internetanbindung. Karlsruhe wurde im Jahr 2003 zur deutschen Internet-Hauptstadt gewählt und zählt heute zu den IT-Hochburgen in Deutschland. The Story of China's First Email Link and How It Got Corrected I Feel
The Story of China’s First Email Link and How it Got Corrected by Jay Hauben (Jan 12, 2010) I feel honored to speak briefly as part of this launching of the new School of Global Journalism and Communications in Chongqing.1 I want to tell you a little bit about the link between the internet and China and between the internet and journalism. In the early 1990s, I sought to find and document where the internet came from, how it was developing and how it was spreading. I found substantial evidence that the internet developed as an open, scientific and engineering collaboration. All the evidence was that the process was international from the very beginning and was guided by a vision of a big advance to human society from a new universal, inexpensive communications system.2 But this historically accurate picture was not reflected in any reporting about the internet in the main US media. The dominant media story was that the internet was a side result from a project of the US military. That myth persists even until today. Why? Of the many US journalists who report about the internet or IT industry it appears that almost none have independently investigated the history of what they write about. It also appears that few editors require such investigation and accuracy of their reporters. Like most else in the US mainstream media, a story about or reference to a mythical military origin is propagated rather than the truth of the public and scientific and open origin of the internet.
