About This Document This document is written for administrators and technicians who install devices at the central office (CO). This document should be used in conjunction with the appropriate Hotwire DSL Card User’s Guide, Network Configuration Guide, or Network Design Guide which describes how to plan the data networks surrounding the Hotwire 8820 GranDSLAM and specific Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) cards. 1 What is the Hotwire 8820 GranDSLAM? The Hotwire 8820 GranDSLAM, which can be installed at the Network Service Provider (NSP), provides high-speed Internet or intranet access. The GranDSLAM has a 20-slot chassis with integral power, alarm, cooling, and interface subsystems designed to house up to 17 DSL port cards. One slot is available for a Management Control Processor (MCP) card. An Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) backplane provides ATM aggregation across multiple DSL port cards. With every slot populated, each GranDSLAM shelf can support up to 408 DSL ports. The following illustration shows a high-level view of an example Hotwire configuration. Central Office (CO) Customer Premises (CP) Network Hotwire Data Service IPC Interface Provider Ethernet DSL SN CARD POTS/DSL MDF GranDSLAM CO POTS POTS Voice Splitter Interface CP POTS Splitter Switched Network Optional Optional Legend: DSL – Digital Subscriber Line IPC – Interworking Packet Concentrator MDF – Main Distribution Frame POTS – Plain Old Telephone Service SN – Service Node 99-15674-04 2 The GranDSLAM chassis accepts the following types of cards: H MCP card. Administers and provides diagnostic connectivity to the DSL cards. The MCP acts as a mid-level manager and works in conjunction with an SNMP network management system, such as HP OpenView, via its LAN port or inband management channel. It gathers operational status for each of the DSL cards and responds to the SNMP requests. The card also has a serial port for local terminal access. H MVL, RADSL, Packet SDSL, and other DSL cards. Provide a processor and an Ethernet interface to the NSP. The processor controls the modems and forwards the packet traffic to and from the Ethernet and DSL interfaces. Models include: — 8310 4-port and 8312 12-port Multiple Virtual Lines (MVL) cards that interoperate with the Hotwire 6310 MVL modem. — 8510 Rate Adaptive Digital Subscriber Line (RADSL) card that interoperates with the 5620 Remote Termination Unit (RTU) or the 6371 DSL Router. — 8343 Packet Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (Packet SDSL) CAP (Carrierless Amplitude and Phase Modulation) card that interoperates with the 6341 and 6342 DSL Routers. — 8546 RADSL card that interoperates with the 5446 RTU. H 8784, 8785, and 8786 2-port Multirate High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (M/HDSL) cards. H 8774, 8775, and 8776 4-port Multirate Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (M/SDSL) cards. NOTE: RADSL, MVL, Packet SDSL, M/HDSL and M/SDSL cards are generically referred to as DSL cards in this document. 3 Hotwire 8820 GranDSLAM Features The Hotwire 8820 GranDSLAM chassis has the following special features: H Dual Power Access The GranDSLAM chassis provides two power input locations, each capable of accepting two independent –48 Vdc power inputs. Two Power Entry Modules (PEMs) are located on the front on the chassis, and a rear-access terminal block is located on the back. At the option of the user, the –48 Vdc power input connections can be made either through the PEMs on the front, or through the terminal block on the rear, as long as both are not used at once. H Power Redundancy The two PEMs mounted in the front of the chassis provide power redundancy. If one power source fails, the other PEM provides all of the power needed by the system. This happens automatically without system disruption. H Major/Minor Alarm Contacts for CO Alarm Requirements The GranDSLAM provides two sets of dry contacts on an 8-pin modular jack, located on the System Interface Module (SIM), for connection to a CO alarm system. H LED Indicators for Power and Fan Status and Major and Minor Alarms LEDs on the front panel of the GranDSLAM chassis indicate the status of important functions (see LEDs on page 31). H Hot Swappable Cards The MCP and DSL cards can be installed and removed from the chassis without service disruption to other cards. H Network Equipment-Building System (NEBS) The GranDSLAM is NEBS certified. NOTE: To achieve power redundancy, two PEMs must always be installed, regardless of whether the front or rear access method is employed for the –48 Vdc power inputs. 4 Preinstallation Considerations Consider the following before installing the Hotwire 8820 GranDSLAM chassis: H Installation Site Your installation site should be well ventilated, clean, and free of environmental extremes. There should be 2 to 3 feet of clearance at the front of the rack in which the chassis is to be installed to allow access for the installation of the chassis, circuit cards, and cables. Also allow for proper clearance at the rear of the rack for cabling. H Power The GranDSLAM operates from a standard CO –48 Vdc power supply (–40.0 to –60.0 Vdc). The power source wires must be 10 AWG solid or stranded. H Grounding A copper lug connector is attached to the back cover of the chassis near the bottom-center area. It can accept 6 through 10 AWG wire grounding, which meets NEBS requirements. H Card Installation It is recommended that you install GranDSLAM cards in contiguous slots to simplify the use of the multislot filler panels. All DSL cards should be installed in ascending order in Slots 1 through 8 and 10 through 18. Make sure that you use the multislot filler plates to cover the empty slots in between. H Cabling Use only CAT3 twisted-pair network connection cables for DSL connections and interface patch cabling. Untwisted analog cables of any length anywhere in the loop substantially contribute to crosstalk and reduced loop reach. If there is adequate maintenance space at the rear of the rack, mount the chassis on the rack before installing cables. If not, install the rear-mounted network connectors on the chassis before mounting the chassis on the rack. The following customer-provided cables and cable adapters are required with this product: — Telco-type 50-pin cable with end-fed (or right angle) plug connectors for connection to the CO POTS splitter card or MDF. (See table of pinouts on page 33 for DSL ports for each DSL slot.) You could need a maximum of 17 cables for the rear connectors, depending on the mix of DSL port cards installed in your chassis.

Alert A method of informing the opponents that partner's bid carries a meaning that they might not expect; alerts are regulated by sponsoring organizations such as EBU, and by individual clubs or organisers of events. Any method of alerting may be authorised including saying "Alert", displaying an Alert card from a bidding box or 'knocking' on the table. Announcement An explanatory statement made by the partner of the player who has just made a bid that is based on a partnership understanding. The purpose of an announcement is similar to that of an Alert.
