3 For more news from Ferryhill, Chilton and South West Durham visit: www.swd.news Friday 20th December 2019 A Christmas Message from The Mayor of Chilton In May this year, I once again was given the privilege of been elected Mayor for the year and have attended many community events. My first was Armed Forces Day where the community came together to honour all our serving troops, service personnel families, veterans, reservists and cadets who are learning skills for the future. I then went to open the Gala which was well supported. Durham Miners’ Gala Day took place as usual on the 2nd Saturday in July where the Banner, led by Wetherby Brass Band, left the Catholic Club then onto the Chilton Sports and Social Club. From there a wreath was laid on both memorials before going to the Wheatsheaf and then to the Durham Big Meeting. On return we came back to the Social club for a buffet. The coach trip to South Shields went very well this year and it is hoped to have a trip again next year. I hope residents can agree with me that the fireworks display this year was better than ever. I attended church for the Remembrance Day service and laid wreaths at both memorials at an event that gets bigger every year. This year, the town council consulted with residents to choose some new Christmas motifs to add to our existing lights. The light switch on at the end of November was very well supported by residents. The choir from Chilton Academy led a lantern parade along with stilt walkers to the council offices where Rev. Lumsden led the switch on event. Children from Chilton Academy sang carols accompanied by Ferryhill Town Band and the Gala Princess helped to switch on the lights. This year’s Christmas card design competition was won by Lex, aged 4, from Chilton Academy. Once again a large congregation attended St Aidan’s Church for Chilton Town Council annual Civic Carol Service. None of these events would have taken place without a lot of hard work and commitment from all the volunteers who bring all these community events to fruition. l would like to take this opportunity to thank them all, because without their help these events would not take place. Christmas is a time when communities, family and friends come together to celebrate. But we should try if we can to help people who are less fortunate than ourselves at this festive time. It is also a time when families remember loved ones who are no longer with us. We have a memory tree in the town council offices and anyone wishing to remember their loved ones can purchase a tag for £1. All proceeds will go towards purchasing a defibrillator for Chilton and all tags will be blessed at the midnight service in St Aidan’s Church. This year, I am raising money to support the Christmas lights and organisations within Chilton. The next charity event is on Valentine’s evening at the Catholic Club. Tickets will be on sale in January. I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a New Year of health, peace and happiness. Councillor Elizabeth Bruce

A Christmas Message from The Mayor of Ferryhill Another year over, and once again time for the Mayor’s Christmas message, and what a Year it has been! A year of real change for Ferryhill Town Council, and undoubtedly even more challenges lie ahead for us to tackle and overcome. We bid the Clerk goodbye and prepare to welcome our new Clerk when the selection process is complete - a new start. Our continued review and reform of committees and internal regulation has enabled a more responsive, progressive and timely approach towards decision-making in Ferryhill, and no doubt these will progress apace this year with the assistance of the Clerk. Ideas, suggestions and proposals are quickly considered, and Ferryhill is better for that. I have been privileged to talk about our town on local radio twice this year, and our success in promoting the firework display, the Ferryfest music festival and our Christmas market bodes well for the future. This year our new Christmas lights look great and with the re-siting of our old lights we have brought Christmas cheer into areas of our town hitherto not included. Don’t they look fabulous? A new memorial stone to the fallen of World War II has been installed in the Town Hall gardens and our new memorial benches provide a lasting and meaningful reminder of their sacrifice. Our “Boar Stone” commemorating the slaying of the last wild boar - yes it really did happen in Ferryhill - now graces the front of the Town Hall next to the front door. This stone dates back to the 13th century and has languished in the Town Hall for decades - pop up and view a piece of real history. We have had setbacks, but we learn, adapt and overcome, we never give up, and will not shy away from difficult decisions - where there’s a way, we have the will. We listen to legitimate concerns and suggestions. That’s why the Summer Fayre is back in the village, improving access for our residents, and benefiting local businesses. Shortly Dean Bank Park will be renovated, a new Heritage Centre completed, a new band practice facility provided and the installation of our miners wheel, also in storage for decades, will happen. We propose extending the dog walking area, improving access for dog owners who live in the Dean Bank area, and following the demolition process in Dean Bank, major work will be undertaken to provide grassed areas with seating. Real improvement in the area. Challenges present an opportunity for improvement, difficulties a chance for change and with your confidence and help, the sky’s the limit for Ferryhill. So may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS, and a HAPPY PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. Town Mayor, Councillor Joe Makepeace
