Welcome to East Local Food Network’s August 2013 Newsletter

ENTER THE EAST YORKSHIRE LOCAL FOOD NETWORK AWARDS NOW!

The EYLFN awards were launched at show over a month ago and we have been pleased to receive a number of entries already! This is the first year that we have run these awards, so you could be the very first EYLFN award winner!

Why should you enter these awards?

1. Great way of generating publicity for your business – being an award winner is a nice story to tell your customers 2. Great recognition for your staff – we all have teams who work hard and it’s a boost for them to feel part of an award-winning team 3. Benchmark yourselves or your products against the best in the area – you will get feedback on your entry.

The awards are being organised by the Business Development Group and will be judged by a group of volunteers who will remain impartial. They are open to anyone involved in local food and drink in East Yorkshire and within 30 miles of the boundary and you may nominate yourselves or others.

Winners will be announced at our AGM / Autumn Conference on Tuesday 22 October.

We have already had some good media coverage around these awards and we are very confident of more, so if you want your business in the spotlight then get your entry in today! If you have any questions please contact Mark Farnsworth (07807 127001).

An entry form giving details of the categories and how to enter can be downloaded at: http://enjoy-eastyorks-food.co.uk/eylfn-2013-awards-launch/

CHAIRMAN’S UPDATE

FESTIVAL FUN TIME CONTINUES!

Attendance at Great Yorkshire Show and Driffield Show

Julia and I and some of our members spent a considerable time talking with customers and handing out members’ literature along with the Enjoy Local Food & Drink guide. We recruited some new members and hope that some of those who took leaflets away have visited your businesses. Both of our demonstration kitchens were also in action at Driffield Show promoting seafood and other local produce. Thank you to those who helped on the stand at both shows and to Martyn from The Dining Room for stepping in at the last minute to carry out seafood demonstrations and tastings in the mobile kitchen.

As part of our ‘Enjoy Seafood from the East Yorkshire Coast’ project funded through the Holderness Coast FLAG, cookery demonstrations and tastings featuring local seafood took place at Driffield Show, Carnival Food Festival, Seafood Festival and Races. HRH Prince Charles even enjoyed crab cakes on his visit to our mobile kitchen in Bridlington Harbour, manned by 2 of our directors, David Nowell and Ray Thompson!

The mobile demonstration kitchens were also used to promote local produce at Show and Beverley NGS Allotments Open Day. 2

We will be attending from Monday 23 – Thursday 26 September and the mobile kitchen will be located on St Sampson’s Square. Please contact Julia if you wish to help out. These publications have been well received. Please let us know if you would like more copies to distribute from your premises or at festivals and events you are attending.

NEW Member Benefit – New Card Processing Service from Yorkshire Bank

I have been talking with Yorkshire Bank (our bankers). They are introducing a new card processing service for both mobile and fixed terminals. Subject to Board agreement, we will be offering this service to our members on a competitive basis, in return for help with sponsorship of some network events and products from the bank. Yorkshire Bank will be able to offer a unique service to those of you who have not yet got a card processing service for your customers and also to those of you who currently use other bank’s terminals. There are some great introductory offers available until the end of September, so contact Steve Maloney on 07733 110382 now and mention that you are an EYLFN member. We will organise seminars for different sectors of our membership, including organisers of farmers’ markets, for Steve to give presentations to. It may be that we have a session at the AGM.

BACS Payments

When making payments by BACS transfer, please remember to state the name of your business or organisation in the description box. If anyone recognises the following payments for a member enhanced entry in the ‘Enjoy Local Food & Drink’ guide, please let Julia know and she will advise me, as the bank are unable to ascertain which businesses they originate from:

3/6/13 Description: S £25.00 11/6/13 Description: TB 05041424204934 Enj001 £25.00

There are still a few outstanding invoices and we would be grateful if those concerned could settle these as soon as possible. Thank you.

Last Chance to Enter ‘Chamber, Bridlington & Yorkshire Coast Business Award’ for ‘The Fisheries Business of the Year’

Nominations are invited for the above award from businesses that work within the fishing sector, either fishing, processing or providing support services, who can demonstrate a total commitment to quality control and have sustainable processes at the core of the business. This includes hospitality and retail businesses sourcing and promoting seafood from the East Yorkshire Coast. The Chamber, Bridlington and Yorkshire Coast Business Awards 2013 will be widely publicised and reported on. In so doing it will raise awareness of the award-winning businesses, the Holderness Coast Fishing Industry and its Communities. Please visit http://www.cbycba.co.uk/web/ for further details and a nomination form for submission online. The closing date for entries is 31 August.

Guide to Employers' Liability Insurance Published

A guide to help small and medium-sized business owners understand their responsibilities when obtaining employers' liability cover has been published by the Association of British Insurers. The guide covers the difference between employers' liability and public liability insurance, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and includes a table of common concerns about health and safety guidelines. Minister for Employment Mark Hoban said the guide would help reduce confusion surrounding health and safety requirements, minimising the burden on smaller firms and barriers to growth. Have You Ever Been Turned Down for Financial Support from the Bank?

If you have been turned down for financial support from a bank, or are thinking of applying for finance, make sure you ask your bank manager about Enterprise Finance Guarantee. The Enterprise Finance Guarantee is a Government loan guarantee scheme to enable lending to SMEs. All of the main high street banks plus a number of other lending institutions offer Enterprise Finance Guarantee loans, which are provided with the support of a Government guarantee. Businesses should ask about Enterprise Finance Guarantee during their loan application. It is principally used to support loans of between £1,000 and £1 million, and repayment terms between three months and 10 years. They have already helped over 20,000 businesses gain access to essential funding and yours could be next! If your business is not eligible for the Enterprise Finance Guarantee, or your loan application was unsuccessful, there are a range of other finance options available for small to medium sized businesses. If you would like to know more about the BDG or think you may be interested in joining us, please contact me on Tel: 01964 541084.

Following on from the last meeting, Charlotte Shipley from Manor Farm Beef, who is a member of the Business Development Group, has kindly set up a Facebook page (East Yorkshire Local-Food) and Twitter account (@EYLFN) for East Yorkshire Local Food Network members. If you are a member and on Facebook or Twitter yourself, don’t forget to follow us and email Charlotte at [email protected] with any news or pages you would like promoting.
