COLORADO ROCKIES Postgame Notes COLORADO ROCKIES Postgame Notes Los Angeles Dodgers (102-58) at Colorado Rockies (87-73) Friday, September 29, 2017 ∙ Coors Field 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E Los Angeles 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 6 1 Colorado 3 2 0 2 2 0 0 0 X 9 11 0 W: Bettis (2-4) L: Ryu (5-9) S: None Rockies Notes The Colorado Rockies won their third consecutive game … have scored six or more runs in three straight games for the first time since July 16- 19 … with the Brewers’ victory tonight in St. Louis, the Rockies remain two games ahead for the second Wild Card with two games to play … the Rockies have at least guaranteed a play-in game on Monday if they lose two and the Brewers win two … one Rockies win or one Brewers loss will clinch a playoff berth for Colorado. The Rockies hit four two-out, two-strike home runs tonight for the first time in MLB history … the last MLB team to hit four two-out, two-strike home runs in a game was Texas at Houston on July 4, 2004 (per Elias Sports Bureau). Chad Bettis earned his second win of the season, his second against the Dodgers and his first of the season at Coors Field … pitched seven innings and allowed one run on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts … it was the third time this season he has pitched seven innings, the first time since his second start of the season on Aug. 19. Nolan Arenado hit his 37th home run of the season, a solo home run in the first inning … now has a career-high 185 hits on the season, surpassing his previous career high of 182, set in 2016 … has now recorded at least 130 RBI in three consecutive seasons, the 11th player in MLB history to accomplish the feat and the first third baseman (also: Ryan Howard, David Ortiz, Ken Griffey Jr., Juan Gonzalez, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Vern Stephens, Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth) Charlie Blackmon hit his 37th home run of the season, a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning … his three RBI tonight gave him 102 RBI from the leadoff position this season, passing Darin Erstad (2000, Angels) for the most RBI by a leadoff hitter in a single season in MLB history … now has 210 hits on the season, the fifth-most in franchise history for a single season, one behind Ellis Burks (1996) for the fourth-most in history. Mark Reynolds hit his 30th home run of the season, a two-run home run in the first inning … joins Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon as Rockies with 30 home runs, the sixth time in franchise history at least three Rockies have hit 30-plus home runs, the first time since 2004 (Burnitz, Castilla, Helton). Trevor Story tied his season high with three hits (four times, last: Aug. 16 vs. Atlanta) … hit his 24th home run of the season, his sixth home run of September … has two home runs and nine RBI over his last three games. Dodgers Notes The Los Angeles Dodgers dropped their fifth straight game against the Rockies, their longest losing streak against Colorado since losing a franchise-high seven straight games in 2007 … with the Astros and Indians both winning, their magic number to clinch home field throughout the entire postseason remains at one. Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched two innings and allowed five runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout … it was his shortest start since pitching one inning in an injury-shortened start on Sept. 12, 2014 at San Francisco … excluding injury, it was tied for the shortest start of his career (April 4, 2014 vs. SF) … allowed a career-high three home runs for the third time in his career, all this season (last: Aug. 30 at Arizona). Justin Turner went 2-for-4 with one RBI … has hit safely in 12 of 15 games vs. the Rockies this season, batting .356 (21-for-59) with 10 RBI. • Clips for 7-12-10
MEDIA CLIPS – July 4, 2018 Blackmon jump-starts Rox offense in win vs. SF Center fielder homers in first, sets tone for 5th win in 6 games Thomas Harding | MLB.com | July 4, 2018 DENVER -- Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon spent nearly a month searching for the swing and pitch recognition that made him the National League batting champion last year. He felt close, but not quite there, and settled for a jam- shot single here, a move-the-runner fly ball there. On Tuesday night, he joined what looks like a Rockies breakout. Blackmon whacked a first-inning home run -- his first in 42 at-bats -- to straightaway center field and added two more hits in his team's fifth victory in six games, an 8-1 win over the Giants at Coors Field. "It's really good to continue to try and win games, play team baseball, even if you're not feeling real awesome at the plate or on the mound," said Blackmon, who has 15 homers -- nine of which occurred during a hot April -- and a .275 batting average. The victory -- which also included Antonio Senzatela's seven scoreless, three-hit innings in his first start of the season and Nolan Arenado's National League-leading 22nd homer -- put the Rockies back at .500 (43-43). Could it also have signaled Blackmon's return to major contributor status? "I've felt pretty good the past couple of days," Blackmon said. 1 From June 6 to Monday's 5-2 victory over the Giants, Blackmon hit .216 (22-for-102) with two homers -- a struggle that was nonexistent when he hit .331 with 37 homers in 2017.

  • Estimated Age Effects in Baseball
ESTIMATED AGE EFFECTS IN BASEBALL By Ray C. Fair October 2005 Revised March 2007 COWLES FOUNDATION DISCUSSION PAPER NO. 1536 COWLES FOUNDATION FOR RESEARCH IN ECONOMICS YALE UNIVERSITY Box 208281 New Haven, Connecticut 06520-8281 http://cowles.econ.yale.edu/ Estimated Age Effects in Baseball Ray C. Fair¤ Revised March 2007 Abstract Age effects in baseball are estimated in this paper using a nonlinear xed- effects regression. The sample consists of all players who have played 10 or more full-time years in the major leagues between 1921 and 2004. Quadratic improvement is assumed up to a peak-performance age, which is estimated, and then quadratic decline after that, where the two quadratics need not be the same. Each player has his own constant term. The results show that aging effects are larger for pitchers than for batters and larger for baseball than for track and eld, running, and swimming events and for chess. There is some evidence that decline rates in baseball have decreased slightly in the more recent period, but they are still generally larger than those for the other events. There are 18 batters out of the sample of 441 whose performances in the second half of their careers noticeably exceed what the model predicts they should have been. All but 3 of these players played from 1990 on. The estimates from the xed-effects regressions can also be used to rank players. This ranking differs from the ranking using lifetime averages because it adjusts for the different ages at which players played. It is in effect an age-adjusted ranking.

  • '72 Rewind: a New Murderers' Row?
'72 Rewind: A New Murderers' Row? (The Chicago Baseball Museum will pay tribute to Dick Allen and the 1972 White Sox in a June 25 fundraiser at U.S. Cellular Field. We will chronicle the events of that epic season here in the weeks ahead. Sport magazine published this story in its August, 1972 edition.) By George Vass Posted on Monday, May 28 In Chuck Tanner's mind there is no question that he has a new “Murderer's Row” in the making in his White Sox. “I'm already convinced that this is the most power- ful hitting team the Sox have had in their history,” said Manager Tanner, “although I don't know if you could call it a 'Murderers' Row' in the old sense. “But potentially it is a 'Murderers' Row' of a differ- ent kind. What I mean by that is that while we have great home run power we also have a balance of fine line-drive hitters, men like Pat Kelly. We have both power and .300 hitting in good balance in our line-up. Allen, Melton and May form one of “When the phrase Murderers' Row is used it brings baseball's potent power trios. to mind the kind of teams in the past that had great home run power, but not necessarily the line-drive hitting, the balance of speed and power that we have.” As the Sox amply demonstrated by their early foot this season, led by the bombardment of Bill Melton, Dick Allen, Carlos May, Ed Herrmann, and Ken Henderson, they have the kind of power attributed to legendary clubs of the past.

  • Applying Matching Equation to Pitch Selection in Major League Baseball
APPLYING MATCHING EQUATION TO PITCH SELECTION IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL __________________________________________________________________ A Thesis Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Masters of Education in Applied Behavior Analysis __________________________________________________________________ David Dragone August 2018 Examining Committee Members: Donald Hantula, Ph.D., Thesis Advisor, Department of Psychology Matt Tincani, Ph. D., BCBA-D, Department of Education Amanda Guld Fisher, Ph. D., BCBA-D, College of Education ABSTRACT This study applied the generalized matching equation (GME) to pitch selection in MLB during the 2016 regular season. The GME was used to evaluate the pitch selection of 21 groups of pitchers as well as 144 individual pitchers. The GME described pitch selection well for four of the 21 pitching groups and 32 of the 144 individual pitchers. Of the remaining groups and individual pitchers, behavior may be explained by rule following behavior or be impacted by distant reinforcers such as salary. All 21 groups demonstrated a bias for fastballs as well as 119 of the 144 individual pitchers. The results extend the use of the GME to natural contexts and suggest an alternative view to evaluating pitchers. KEYWORDS: general matching theory, general matching equation, sports, baseball, reinforcement ii DEDICATION This study is dedicated to the countless number of people who have supported me throughout the years both in this degree and professionally. Thank you, to my wife, Jen, and Children, Aurora and Rose, who gave me the motivation to keep working through this process and seeing it through to the end. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Dr.
