VANCOUVER ARTIST HIGHLIGHT : BRUCE’S CORNER THE RETROGRADES We all have favourite concerts that we’ve seen. One of mine would be the first I ever saw. When I was 14, my best friend and I got tickets to see Three Dog Night at The Coral in . It was a Friday night and we caught a bus downtown and were at the doors by 4:30. It was general seating in those days so the plan was to get very good seats. Despite being crushed at the doors, we were able to race in and grab seats 4 rows from the stage. I’ve got to say that it was an incredible first live show. My friend came within an inch of catching a drum stick. The Three Dogs were right in front of us and as such we were able to see the whites of their eyes. Calgary was a small city in those days without a venue to host really big concerts like The Rolling Stones or . But we did have McMahon Stadium (home of the Calgary Stampeders) to go to though and it did host some pretty good shows. In 1970 the city was the final stop of The Festival Express which was a train that traveled across Canada playing shows in , Winnipeg and Calgary. Featured performers that weekend in Calgary included The , , Janice Joplin, Buddy Guy as well as Canadians Ian and Sylvia. Formed in 2015, the Retrogrades have recently begun bringing their I was kind of young to go to that show but do remember the uproar over having love of high-energy Rock n’ Rock to venues south of the Fraser. The all of those drug-crazed invading our safe and pristine community. I Retrogrades play danceable hits from across the years, including didn’t know who was playing and probably wouldn’t have appreciated it even if I Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Lenny Kravitz, Queen, Duran did and it was only recently when I saw a documentary on the Festival Express Duran, The Doors, as well as recents hits from performers like The that I realized who was in town that weekend. Weeknd & Pharrell. In later years, I took my first date to see The Beach Boys and again, because of The Retrogrades came together when 3 work colleagues all realized festival seating, had fairly decent tickets to see the original lineup. Over the they shared a love of live music. Ted Johnson (vocals, guitar), Brad years I saw many concerts, but the bigger the band, the bigger the venue and Bauman (lead guitar) and Neil Stephenson (drums) work together in the further away from the stage I was. I finally saw The Rolling Stones in leadership roles with the Delta School District. After a year of Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium in the 90’s and they were just specks in jamming for fun and a few school district events, discussions about the distance. Watching the performance on the big screens was the only way I expanding the project began. The search for a bass player lead them was convinced I was not watching a cover band. I was also in the same building to Stephan Major, a local Ocean Park contractor. as Paul McCartney but could have been watching on my big screen tv at home and would have been closer to the bathroom. I mean it was cool to see a Beatle Recently the Retrogrades have begun playing shows locally around but it was not like sitting 4 rows away from Three Dog Night. Just saying. For White Rock and Ladner, including a recent and memorable me this is the problem with the concerts. When I saw Bruce Springsteen in opportunity to be the opening act for Jim Byrnes. Shows so far have Tacoma 25 years ago, the stadium was half empty and we were able to move up been packed out and full of energy. Come ready to dance! Follow close to the stage. That was special. I’ve often thought about how cool it would them on social media: www.facebook.com/retrogradesyvr be to be a small club and a recording artist would get up and perform for just the 12 of us. The closest I’ve come to that is going to a piano bar at The YORK Catch The Retrogrades at West Beach on Friday May 5th! Hotel in Toronto and listening to Burton Cummings perform with people sitting around the piano as he played. Very cool.

ROCK N ROLL TRIVIA So the point is that if you have a chance to see eleven09, do it now when they are playing smaller venues than wait until they are playing the arenas and are nothing but specks on the big screen. 1. 60 years ago in 1957, Elvis Presley's single "All Shook Up" brings him his first #1 hit in the UK. It is his 7th straight #1 single in the US and also tops the US Country and R&B charts.

2. 40 years ago in 1977, Stockholm, Sweden group Abba top the charts in the UK with "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and hit #1 in the US for the first and only time with the single "Dancing Queen". 3. 20 years ago in 1997, NY rapper, producer, record label owner Puff Daddy's debut single with Mase "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" spends six weeks at #1 in the US and reaches #19 in the UK.
