Field hockey players honored The Suffolk County Field Hockey Coaches Association recently recognized West Islip High School varsity field hockey players (pictured) Victoria Devlin, Madison Horan, Julianna Kotarski, Gabrielle Nicolosi, Holly Schweitzer and Darcie Wallace with multiple honors at the organization’s annual awards dinner at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Football gives meaning to team player The West Islip HS football team leads by positive example, both on and off the field. The players recently visited Good Samaritan Hospital, spending time interact- ing, talking and playing with the children in the pediatrics wing. During the month of November, the team wore custom jerseys to support local veterans in honor of Veterans Day, and entered the field carrying 50 American flags. In October, players wore custom pink jerseys to support breast cancer awareness. The team understands the power of random acts of kindness and the profound positive impact those acts have on others. The positive influences the players expe- rience from parents, fellow players and their coaches has led the team to support all students, regardless of their cognitive abilities. This year, the team named West Islip resident Vincent Luvera, who is autistic, manager of the high school varsity football team, and presented Vincent with a team jersey. The team also surprised the Luvera family with a West Islip Lions senior football sign for their front lawn. The Town of Islip applauds Vincent, the West Islip High School football team, its coaches and athletic director. Courtesy photo
