West Middle School Uniform Policy 2020-2021 Students will be required to be in uniform. We have specific colors for each grade level. West Middle School shirts will be available to purchase from the school for $8.00. We are buying the shirts in bulk in order to keep the cost of the shirts to a minimum. You are also welcome to purchase “solid” polo shirts at your local department stores as long as they have a collar and no writing or insignia on them. Shirts 6th Grade boys and girls: Black polo shirts 7th Grade boys and girls: Red polo shirts 8th Grade boys and girls: Gray polo shirts Pants Absolutely NO JEANS ALL STUDENTS All Boys: Tan or khaki uniform/dress pants or knee length walking shorts, no belt required All Girls: Tan or Khaki uniform/dress pants, knee length shorts, capris, or skirts (no short skirts must pass the “fingertip length” test) Sweaters/Cardigans/Sweatshirts Solid or plain sweaters, cardigans or sweatshirts can be worn but must be the color of the grade level. (No logos unless West Middle School spirit wear) Shoes/Socks Dress or tennis shoes – must enclose the entire foot - no Crocs allowed Knee or crew socks – white, black or gray PE Uniform A West Middle School PE uniform is required and can be purchased through your PE teachers for a cost of $20.00. Uniform includes a West PE t-shirt and shorts. (PE shirts are not allowed during regular classes.) Gym shoes and socks are also required All students in PE will also have a section of swimming. Swimming suits and towels are required. Boys – Swim trunks with liner Girls – One piece swimsuit Spirit Wear Fridays are Spirit Day at West Middle School. (Tan pants are still required on these days.) West Middle School offers spirit wear that can be worn on Out Of Uniform Days and Friday Spirit Days which are announced throughout the school year. These shirts and sweatshirts are available to order at registration and in the main office all year long. See flyers in the main office at West Middle School. Please Note: Uniforms shirts must be worn underneath sweaters/sweatshirts. * Any student wearing clothing deemed inappropriate by an administrator will be asked to change or may be sent home. .

Most don’t think of the swimsuit as a culturally significant fashion item, but it has a long and colorful history going back thousands of years with an evolution that might surprise you. And though we can’t be certain, one thing (probably) hasn’t changed at all—the agony and ecstasy of finding the perfect swimsuit. In the beginning… Public bathing was very popular in ancient Greece and Rome. Scholars believe that men and women of the upper class wore swimsuits in the bath houses. The earliest known image of women wearing swimsuits is from the early 4th century. “The Bikini Girls” mosaic decorated the floor of a Roman bath at the Villa Roma de Casale near Piazza Armer- ina, Sicily. The women are shown exercising and competing in various athletic events clad in what looks much like a modern bikini. The only exercise that didn’t require a swim- suit at the time was swimming. Styling by the Sea 140 Years of Beachwear Beach Fashions in the 1930s The stock market crash on Tuesday, October 29, 1929, and the subsequent deterioration in the value of business assets over the following three years, had a devastating impact on the economies of United States and the world at large. The high flying,care-free days of the Roaring ‘20s were over and with them went the risk taking and pushing of boundaries that characterized the lives of people during the decade. The Great Depression had begun and would continue for ten years. Spending on luxuries declined as disposable cash became scarce and people grew more fiscally conservative. Concern about employment and their long term financial prospects became paramount as the atmosphere of the country became serious and sober. Businesses closed and jobs were cut by many companies due to falling demand for their products. This caused a domino effect that resulted in economic stagnation and the deep economic depression. Luckily the pleasures derived from time spent on the beach remained an affordable and welcome means of escape from the harsh realities of everyday life. The cover of the September 3, 1932 issue of The Saturday Evening Post presented above shows a rollicking image of life at the shore at the close of summer on Labor Day Weekend. The lifeguard sits calmly on his stand, eyes closed, while pretty girls preen, an amorous swain serenades his gal who is attired in the latest “beach pajamas”, boys play leapfrog, dogs bark, babies shovel sand into pales and bathers, both large and small, hold on to a rope to save them from being knocked over by waves.

The sales assistant, with arms full of clothing and a tape measure around her neck, beams at the woman, who is looking at her reflection with a confused stare. The woman is wearing what from the front appears to be a normal, knee-length floral dress. However, the mirror behind her reveals that the “dress” is actually a flimsy sheet of paper that is taped onto the woman and leaves her back-half exposed. The caption reads: “So these are the disposable paper dresses I’ve been reading about?” This newspaper cartoon pokes fun at one of the most defining fashion trends in American history: the paper dress of the late 1960s.1 In 1966, the American Scott Paper Company created a marketing campaign where customers sent in a coupon and shipping money to receive a dress made of a cellulose material called “Dura-Weave.” The coupon came with paper towels, and what began as a way to market Scott’s paper products became a unique trend of American fashion in the late 1960s.

M&S: Swimwear Style for the sun since the 1930s 1920s & 1930s In 1928 we sold bathing suits and bathing caps. Customers shopping for their holidays at M&S in the 1930s would have seen our advertising leaflet for woollen swimsuits. The swimsuits were colour-fast to both sea and sun so were wearable, durable and fashionable. The first swimsuits were offered in a variety of styles to suit the wearer’s modesty: from ‘a regulation one piece... which essentially spells swimming’ to ‘a combined brassiere and shorts to give the utmost comfort and freedom’. Swimwear Marketing Leaflet, 1930s Ref: HO/11/1/5/27 1939 Swimwear available in 1939 included expanding swimsuits, and swimsuits with ripple stitch detail. In the late 1930s we sold knitting patterns for clothing, including swimsuits. Knitting Pattern, late 1930s 1950s After the Second World War, Chairman Simon Marks knew the M&S customer was demanding ‘better materials, better design, better finish…’ Scientific developments made during the war were used to fulfil customers’ needs. New fabrics such as rayon and nylon were widely used to provide people with easy-wear, easy-care garments, and were perfect for swimwear. Shape-enhancing features, such as padded busts were introduced and strapless styles became popular. For men, swimming trunks with elasticated waists were big sellers in the 1950s. The M&S stand at the 1962 Ideal Home Show sold as much swimwear in one day as an average store would sell in a week! ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN SCHOOL DRESS CODE Neatness, modesty, safety and cleanliness are the goals for our student dress code. Clothing, hair and accessories should not draw attention to the individual or become a distraction in the educational environment. Clothing should be clean, neat and hemmed. No exposed under- garments or holes in clothing are allowed. A parent will be called to bring a change of clothing for the child who is not in compliance with our dress code. Teachers and administration may request a child to change any item which is a distraction to the student or to others. 1. SHIRTS must completely cover the abdomen when arms are held above the head. No tank tops, halter tops, low cut tops and sheer or see-through fabric. Girls may wear sleeveless tops. 2. PANTS or jeans which fit properly are acceptable. 3. DRESSES, skirts, and shorts should be at fingertip length when arms are held at the side. Girls are encouraged to wear shorts under their skirts for modesty on the playground. 4. SWIMMING SUITS for swimming lessons, Fun Field Day, Year-End Picnic, and any other school sponsored event must be modest and fit properly (please check for stretching, loose elastic, etc.). Swimsuit Policy URJ Greene Family Camp 2016 At GFC, we believe in teaching our staff and campers the value behind creating a community that allows for freedom to self-express and self-identify. We also believe these expressions contribute to our Jewish community at camp. As a community, we represent Greene Family Camp, the URJ, the Jewish people, and ourselves as individuals. We have a critical role as exemplars of Jewish values for our campers. One such value, particularly in today's society, is tzniut, or modesty in dress. It is important to always keep this in mind when we get dressed every day at camp—for the day, for evening programs, for Shabbat, and for the pool. This year, we want to dive right in to a new way of representing ourselves. Certain types of clothing and swimwear that have been worn at camp in the past—by both staff members and campers, male and female—are becoming too revealing. Because of this, we want to bring back a sense of tzniut in our clothing and swimwear. Being more modest does not necessarily mean that we can’t still be stylish or fashion-forward. There is a way to still wear a stylish swimsuit while also being fully comfortable in the water and fully covered at all times.
