  • Feds: More Doping Charges Could Be in Pipeline
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2020 BETTER THE DEVIL WE KNOW NOW FEDS: MORE DOPING by Chris McGrath with additional reporting by Bill Finley CHARGES COULD BE IN He who dares, wins. For commercial breeders, however, that famous military maxim is becoming ever less practicable. Rather PIPELINE than hold their nerve, they rush nervously from one new stallion to the next, few daring to stick around long enough to take a yearling to market once a first crop has actually been exposed to the racetrack. These cycles often become self-fulfilling, in that few stallions can seize so limited an opportunity in time to maintain adequate momentum. But every now and then, one comes along that, no sooner than he is discarded, promptly rebukes the entire industry for its fickleness. Few have done this quite as dramatically as Daredevil. • With a Well-Received First-Crop of Yearlings for Heeraat, Mickley Stud Is Looking Forward to the Stallion’S Runners Hitting the Track in the Spring
Here he comes With a well-received first-crop of yearlings for Heeraat, Mickley Stud is looking forward to the stallion’s runners hitting the track in the spring. Aisling Crowe chats with Richard Kent 48 mickley stud Photo by Emma Berry LL BOODSTOCK investment IS HIGH RISK, but backing a new stallion is at the very top of the “beware” pyramid and should come with a government health warning.A Launching a new stallion onto the market takes nerves of steel, and particularly so when the stud in question is not perhaps located in the more fashionable enclaves of the thoroughbred world and the sire does not command the astronomical covering fee that attracts the attention, and mares, of the industry’s influencers. The process is fraught with as much risk as that of a space launch. Luckily, Richard Kent of Mickley Stud possesses the pedigree, experience and nous which have helped him guide the first three seasons of Heeraat toward lift-off, the son of Dark Angel due to have his first runners next spring, The process is also aided by Heeraat himself, a talented sprinter from a fast family, and by a sire who is establishing himself as a dominant force in the breed. “It has taken 25 years to try and understand how to get a stallion’s career going and to develop the confidence to do it,” confides the Cork-born Kent who runs the stud in Shropshire with his partner Claire Lloyd. “I spoke to Tony O’Callaghan about how he had achieved success with Danetime, Kodiac, and now Society Rock and he said you just have to keep working away, even though you can be unlucky and get average horses until one day the good ones come along.” Danetime and Kodiac began life at similar fees to the £4,000 that Heeraat has stood at for his first three seasons.

  • Epsom Derby & Oaks
Marten Julian’s Epsom Derby & Oaks ONLINE PREVIEW Friday 5 June The Investec Oaks (1m 4f) (4.30) Writing this on Thursday I am assuming the ground will be riding good for the start of the meeting. The going was on the soft side earlier in the week, but temperatures are set to rise and conditions could be quick by Friday unless the forecast thunderstorms hit the course. If they do, then they could bring up to 5mm of rain, which would ease the ground to good to soft, if not softer. There is nothing more frustrating in an analysis of form than a late change in ground conditions, so this uncertainty has to be factored into my preview. Visually the most impressive performance I have seen has come from Crystal Zvezda when she won a Listed trial stakes at Newbury in May. Rated just 78 at the time, on the strength of her maiden win at Lingfield in October, she beat the 98-rated Montalcino going away by three and a half lengths, with 90-rated Pamona half a length back in third. On figures she ran to a mark of around 103, 4lb lower than her new mark of 107. Crystal Zvezda won the race in the manner of a very talented filly. Last in the early stages and still with a wall of horses in front of her a quarter of a mile from home, she was switched approaching the final furlong and in just a couple of strides went clear of her rivals to win with loads in hand.
