Simmonds Religious Education, BYU Master of Arts In 1852, the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made the pivotal decision to publicize the doctrine and practice of plural marriage—something they had worked to keep out of the public eye for years. This decision came in response to federal and social pressures. They quickly moved to announce and defend plural marriage among Church members as well as broader society, including those in the federal government. Orson Pratt was chosen by Brigham Young to be the face and the voice of the Church concerning plural marriage, both in Salt Lake City among members and in Washington D.C., where he preached sermons and published a periodical on the subject. This thesis a) demonstrates why Orson Pratt was the ideal candidate for such an undertaking; b) assesses the motivation for and context of the public unveiling and defense of plural marriage; c) analyzes Pratt’s rhetoric of the first public treatise on the subject given to a Latter-day Saint congregation at a special conference on 29 August 1852; and d) compares the rhetoric and reasoning between Pratt’s sermon to the Saints and his persuasive periodical written to the nation from Washington D.C. titled The Seer. Pratt’s rhetoric is incisive and carefully tailored to his audience. Important nuances in argumentation arise as he publishes The Seer and strives to convince his fellow citizens that plural marriage is right before God, improves society, and that the Saints should be allowed to practice polygamy as an expression of religious freedom. Orson Pratt ultimately fails to make a difference in the national opinion of plural marriage, but is successful in establishing a foundation of principles and reason that would be employed by the Saints to defend the practice of plural marriage for decades. They knew that it would be a difficult aspect of their religious practice to share, let alone defend. In preparation for a large-scale public unveiling, Brigham Young, the enigmatic Prophet of the Church, reassigned Salt Lake City’s first mayor, Jedediah Grant, from a proselyting mission to Washington, D.C. in order to help manage the public image of the Church and possibly secure friends in the government.1 This was done amidst the damaging, nation-wide publication of allegations of polygamy by government officials.2 Grant found it difficult to broach the subject, but boldly stated in a letter to Brigham Young that “(P)olygamy is the bone in the throat, it causes a great deal of coughing and sneezing, wind, etc. But I shall give it to them as I would feed a hemlock tree to a jackass.”3 1 See Gene A. Kane, one of the only members of the federal government sympathetic to the Latter-day Saints and their cause.4 This was simply one of many steps taken to move toward the official acknowledgement of plural marriage, although it had been practiced quietly by Church leadership for about a decade and was well known among the general membership of the Church.5 Then, in August of 1852, a Church conference was called, and the primary topic was plural marriage. For the first time in an official capacity, Church leadership taught and endorsed the doctrine and practice of plural marriage publicly.6 This became one of the most pivotal decisions that Church leadership had made up to this point; not just the initial announcement to about two-thousand members in Salt Lake City, but the subsequent and immediate attempts to expound plural marriage to society beyond the borders of the Territory of Utah and outside the scope of the religious zeal of the Saints.     "I Love to Hear Him Talk and Rehearse" The Life and Teachings of Lorin C. Woolley by Brian C. Hales Copyright 1993 Lorin C. Woolley became popular in the 1920s as a speaker among different groups of dissenters from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His acceptance was greatest among men and women who had been excommunicated for practicing polygamy. On one occasion Joseph White Musser, who had listened to him many times, recorded: "I love to hear him talk and rehearse."(1) During his lifetime, Lorin C. Woolley shared many fascinating stories with his listeners. THE IMPORTANCE OF LORIN C. WOOLLEY Since the Manifesto, the practice of polygamy outside of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been advocated by a number of interesting and dedicated individuals. Many have served as leaders in their respective pseudo-church organizations. These men have demonstrated sincerity, charisma and commitment to their cause. They have endured persecution from external sources including suffering prison sentences. Nevertheless, none of their contributions to the practice of post-manifesto polygamy compares with the offering presented by Lorin C. Woolley. Through his recollections he provided his followers with access to a line of priesthood authority, ostensibly allowing them to eternally seal plural marriages. What I hope to provide, therefore, is a snapshot of online resources related to LDS or Mormon cinema near the beginning of their evolution. I believe that the Internet will become the next great force in both Mormon cinema and world cinema in general, if it has not already done so. Realizing they were not coming back or slowing down, I willed myself to get up and limped painfully along. I vividly remember ask- ing out loud: “Why?     Berryville from: Utah Place Names BERRYVILLE* (Kane County). See Glendale* below. GLENDALE* (Kane County) is on US-89 in Long Valley along the upper Virgin River. Four miles south is Orderville*. After being settled in 1862 by a party of settlers led by John and William Berry from Kanarraville*, Glendale was named Berryville* as the first settlement in the valley. At that time, Long Valley was called Berry Valley. Of those first settlers, Robert Berry and his wife Isabella were murdered by the Indians, and in 1866 Berryville was abandoned. In 1871, members of the Muddy Mission in Nevada resettled Long Valley. Led by James Leithead, the group settled on the old Berryville townsite and renamed it Glendale because of the beautiful surroundings. Another version of the naming of Glendale states that the name came from their leader and first bishop, who was reminded of his home in Scotland. While these studies emphasize conflicts between the Mormon establishment and the non-Mormon federal government, Mormon/non-Mormon relations within Utah have received little direct attention. Based on religious affiliations recorded in the 1880 federal census of Utah Territory, this study uses historical GIS to visualize the composition of Utah's \Mormon" and \non-Mormon" towns. The results highlight the extensive presence of religious minorities in Utah's settlements. Case studies of farm villages, mining camps, and urban neighborhoods probe the social and economic contexts of non-Mormon presence in Utah. These studies, based on Sanborn maps and city directories, explore the geographical mosaic of Mormon and non-Mormon residence and business activity. These variegated patterns, often absent from historical accounts of the region, enable localized analyses of the ensuing decades of cultural conflict, transformation and assimilation. More often than not, he has been described with adjectives like violent, wicked, unstable, and licentious. Yet intriguing references suggest that a more balanced view of this complex man might be appropriate. The Prophet described his brother in a blessing 18 December 1833 this way: "Brother William is as the fierce lion which divideth not the spoil because of his strength." x Then on 9 December 1842, William defended the Nauvoo Charter with uncommon eloquence as representative for Hancock County in the Illinois legislature.2 In August 1845, W. W. Phelps designated William "the Patriarchal Jacob's Staff." 3 And B. H. Roberts, impressed with the seventy-year-old William in 1881, said he had "so vindicated the claims and the character of his brother that ever afterward whenever the question of Joseph Smith came up, people would say 'He had just as good a right to be a prophet as any man mentioned in the Bible.' " 4 William Smith was born at Royal t o n , Vermont, 13 March 1811, the fifth son of Joseph, Sr., and Lucy Mack Smith.     St. Louis Luminary: The Latter-day Saint Experience at the Mississippi River, 1854–1855 Susan Easton Black he St. Louis Luminary, an LDS newspaper printed in St. Louis, was Tshort lived but is a key to chronicling the status of the Church on the American frontier in 1854 and 1855. Although it was only one volume, the newspaper contained fifty-two issues, each spanning four pages in length with each page divided into five columns. This translates into approximately twenty-six hundred single-spaced pages on 8½" x 11" paper. From the first issue on Wednesday, November 22, 1854, to the last issue on Saturday, December 15, 1855, its masthead proclaimed the paper a “light [shining] in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not,” a refer- ence to the gospel being published in the Luminary in the “gentile” city of St. Louis. A new book, The Best of the St. Louis Luminary, gives an in-depth history of the newspaper and its contents, and includes a DVD of scans of the entire volume of the newspaper in a searchable format. This article is excerpted from that book. Because of the years in which this newspaper was printed, it played a significant role in the national discussion of polygamy, which had not been publicly announced until 1852.1 The paper printed an unrelenting defense of polygamy against a backdrop of exaggerated reports and sensational claims that stemmed from the halls of Congress and from eastern newspapers. Editor Erastus Snow did not hesitate to confront politicians, newspaper col- umnists, or even the president of the United States on the issue.
