Finally, a lot of thanks to Shakila for her moral support, intellectual encouragement and patience, and Shazwan for his juvenile antics that have helped bring joy especially in those difficult times; and my parents for their patience and understanding. ix The Construction of a 'National Identity': A Study of Selected Secondary School Textbooks in Malaysia's Education System, With Particular Reference to Peninsular Malaysia The overriding concern of a multiethnic, multicultural and multireligious Malaysia has always been with inter-ethnic conflict and resolution. It is therefore little wonder that the Malaysian education system is seen arxl utilised by the State as an important social institution where certain ideas, values and symbols can be transmitted to students, the country's future generations, with the primary objective of fostering ethnic harmony in schools in particular and in the country in general. nd it is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine what kinds of images, ideas, values and symbols that are being selected and promoted (and at the same time, excluding other items, images, ideas) in the reading materials of school students, which collectively are deemed as constructing Malaysia's 'national identity'. The textual analysis shows that the majority of these school texts tend to give heavy emphasis on Malay culture and interests, thus indicating that the construction of the 'national identity' is largely informed arid influenced by the State's policies such as the Malay-biased national culture policy and the New Economic Policy. In addition, the study also examines other related institutions such as the Ministry of Education (i.e. its Textbook Bureau) and the book publishing industry as a whole to see how they relate to the formation in the school texts of the kind of 'national identity' that is largely defined and sanctioned by the State. A group of 150 students were interviewed to ascertain their social and political consciousness. Their responses on the whole tend to suggest that the school texts are capable of creating, if not reinforcing, sub-national loyalties or ethnic sentiments among the students, the kind of consciousness that could seriously compete with arid challenge the nationalist project of creating a 'national identity'. In other words, national unity could be threatened. x Map (a) xi xii HAVFER I ThflBDWCION 1.1 Problem Statement Most states in the world today have populations that are ethnically heterogeneous, often 'composed of two or more ethnic communities, jostliog for influence and power, or livirg in uneasy harmony within the same state borders' (A.D. Smith 1981:9). It follows that inter-ethnic conflict has become more intense and regular particularly in the past several years (ibid.:1O-11; Stone 1985:9-14). This is why many of these states are determined to foster rapid 'national' integration (Smith 1981:10). And it is therefore little wonder that in a multiethnic, multicultural and multireligious Malaysia, inter-ethnic conflict and resolution has become one of the country's overriding concerns. As a result, indigenous communities still face isolation due to cultural barriers; languages continue to disappear. To accelerate communication, speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) technology is one approach that can overcome language barriers. However, S2ST systems require machine translation (MT), speech recognition (ASR), and synthesis (TTS) that rely heavily on supervised training and a broad set of language resources that can be difficult to collect from ethnic communities. Recently, a machine speech chain mechanism was proposed to enable ASR and TTS to assist each other in semi-supervised learning. The framework was initially implemented only for monolingual languages. In this study, we focus on developing speech recognition and synthesis for these Indonesian ethnic languages: Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, and Bataks. We first separately train ASR and TTS of standard Indonesian in supervised training. We then develop ASR and TTS of ethnic languages by utilizing Indonesian ASR and TTS in a cross-lingual machine speech chain framework with only text or only speech data removing the need for paired speech-text data of those ethnic languages. The purpose of this study was to determine how adult people, with background Javanese culture (which is different from the norms of Western culture) in expressing themselves when they are depleted. The study involved six informants experienced fatigue caused by the emergence of externally problems in long term. Data retrieved by using in-depth interviews. Before analyzed, researcher did data triangulation by checking the consistency of the answers, discussion with colleagues and informants. Furthermore, data is proceed in a phenomenological analysis, in order to obtain specific themes. The findings showed that the conditions of impulsive verbal appear on informants, while the impulsive behavior also appear but not shown in front of people who stimulate and did not lead to be a destructive action. In these conditions "self-restraint" in principle "munggah-mudhunke rasa" is used all of informants to control themselves. King Universit of Hull Introduction For a long time now the Malaysian government, the Sarawak state authorities and several outside agencies and observers have recognised that one of the main tasks which modern Sarawak faces is the improvement of its agricultural sector and the alleviation of rural poverty. Much of what James Jackson said in the mid-1960s, in his outstanding geographical study of Sarawak, is still of relevance today. The extension and improvement of farming is the cornerstone , of development planning in Sarawak for, despite the recent growth of the timber industry, agriculture will remain the basis of the economy and ultimately social and economic progress depends on the upgrading of rural incomes. However, in terms of agricultural development, Sarawak faces severe difficulties. Over vast areas soils are poor, and often acid; the steep slopes characteristic of much of the interior and the extensive peat swamps of the coastal plains inhibit development and enhance costs, as does the lack of roads. The widespread existence of the bush-fallow method of hill-padi farming presents a complex and urgent problem which must be solved before agricultural development can proceed much further in interior areas. Train- ing schemes are required to overcome the general ignorance of good farming practices and there is a shortage of suitable staff. Finally, development is hampered by land-tenure problems. (1968: 73-74) Government planning in Sarawak must be seen in the context of the wider Federa- tion of Malaysia's New Economic Policy, initiated with the Second Malaysia Plan (1971-75).

We argue that literature engenders a space for the nation to share in the experiences and feelings of groups and situations that might never be encountered directly. It often engages with the realities of a nation through diverse constructions of its history, its realities and communal relations. As such we posit that literature can be a significant tool to study the realities of Malaysian nationhood and its constructions of inter-ethnic relationships, and ultimately, an effective tool to forge nation building. The discussion focuses on investigating the role that literature has played in Malaysian education in the context of engaging with ethnically diverse Malaysian learners and whether text selection has prioritised ethnic diversity in its Malaysian context.

An intense, reserved, yet courteous person, he lives with his wife and children in a modest, two-storeyed house in Subang, one of the dormitory suburbs of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. It was my privilege to visit him there, and to engage in the discussions on which this profile draws. Despite his critically-acclaimed literary achievements, Maniam is denied official recognition and public acclaim in his country of birth because he chooses to write in English, rather than the national language known as Bahasa Malaysia. Yet there are valid reasons for his choice of literary medium, reasons that are inherent in Malaysia's modern history as former British colony and now independent state to which immigrant communities have made a vital contribution. Nor does his use of English render him less authentic a Malaysian than his literary counterparts in that country. Indeed, his works are imbued with the vibrancy of the Malaysian landscape, both human and physical. ************************************* Born Subramaniam Krishnan in 1942, K S Maniam is of Hindu, Tamil and working-class background. His birthplace was Bedong, a small town in Kedah situated in the rural north of Malaysia.
