TERM 3 AT BAUPLE STATE SCHOOL

Term 3 was an exciting and successful time of learning and fun for our students at Bauple State School. We were thankful to be able to be back onsite to learn and work together. Gardening, ten pin bowling, our Keys to Success excursion, a visit from the Life Savers, breakfast club and tuckshop, a new playground, netball training, Book Fair and our annual Expo Night were among some of our highlights.

Gardening Students have enjoyed working in our school garden. Carefully planted seedlings were cared for by our young gardeners until they were ready to harvest. Impressed parents and friends purchased the produce at our Expo Night.

Ten Pin Bowling and Keys to Success Excursion Student relished in the opportunity to learn more about ten pin bowling. Our new ten pin bowling equipment offered a great oppor- tunity for students to practise their skills and prepare for our Keys to Success Excursion to Maryborough Ten Pin Bowling. Here students were able to use their bowling skills while demonstrat- ing the keys to success – confidence, organisation, getting along, persistence and resilience. This was followed by a pizza picnic and play at the park. This was a fantastic way to end a term of hard work and learning.

Breakfast Club and Tuckshop Students and parents enjoy our weekly Breakfast Club and tuckshop. We thank the Maryborough Food Basket, Sarah and the P&C for making Wednesdays so tasty!

Our New Playground Playtimes are even more popular with our new colourful, fun playground. Students and staff have given it the thumbs up. How lucky are we to have such a fantastic playground at our school!

Queensland Life Savers Students were fortunate to have a visit from the Queensland Life Savers. They were able to engage in a presentation about water and beach safety. Staff were really impressed with how knowledgeable our students were about this topic.

Netball Training Bauple students trained and worked hard with their netball coach, Bec, throughout Term 3. Students showed persistence and improved each week as they prepared for the annual netball carnival. Unfortunately, weather led to the carnival be- ing cancelled but we are all very proud of our netballers and their commitment to improve and work together. We thank Bec for her work and also thank Tiaro State School for their work planning for this annual carnival.

Book Fair and Expo Night The front room at Bauple transformed into a snowy wonderland with the Artic Book Fair display in September. The selection of books was great and all students enjoyed choosing their end of year book prizes. We warmly thank our dedicated P&C for sponsoring a book prize for every student at our school. This is a fantastic Bauple tradition and supports our school’s focus on reading. Our annual Expo Night was well attended by our school community. All students enjoyed presenting their music and drama items on stage and some of our young authors shared their written work with an ap- preciative audience.

e-Kindy and Pre-Prep Days Our e-Kindy Pod provides an excellent opportunity for young learners in our community. Each week we see them gain greater con- fidence and develop the skills to prepare for future learning. It has also been a pleasure to have our future prep students join us at school each Monday. This provides an opportunity for future students to form friendships and become familiar with staff and school routines. Please see us if you would like to join our Pre-Prep program or are interested in e-Kindy for 2021. Bauple Band Hall

Bronwyn 0407019481 Bauple State School P&C Update

Term 3 was a busy term for our Bauple State School P&C, with fundraising and supporting our wonderful school. We are very grateful to Toni and Steve at B&H Rural, who donated our major prize for our annual Father’s Day raffle. We would also like to thank Guy form Simply CnC for donating our runner up prize. Bauple local, Judy Sokol, was the lucky winner of first prize, a Stihl pressure washer. We would like to thank everyone who purchased tickets and helped us raise over $800 in much needed funds for our P&C.

This year has been difficult for many reasons and the ability to be able to do some fundraising for our P&C has certainly been one of them! However, we were able to also hold our pie drive fundraiser in term 3, this year we ordered from Bell Hilltop Bakery and from all reports everyone enjoyed their yummy goodies! Again we thank everyone who supported this fundraiser, which saw us raise over $200 profit from this effort.

The schools annual expo was held on Thursday 3rd September and it was fantastic to see it enjoyed by every family from the school. The teachers, staff and our students did an amazing job entertaining us and showing off their music and drama skills! It was also a great opportunity for our families to see the kids wonderful work they do at school. The P&C were happy to cater the night with a BBQ dinner followed by a complimentary supper. Term 3 was also an exciting Term, as it saw the permanent appointment of Bauple’s new Principal, Jessica Chin. Jess has been an extremely hard working teacher of our school for many years and has been in the acting principal role for the past approximate year and a half, so it was fantastic to see her hard work rewarded with this appointment. We all feel there are exciting times ahead for our little school. Term 4 will be another busy one, with the P&C supporting various school events towards the end of the year. We are also looking at the possibility of hosting another State Of Origin BBQ at the Rex grounds, but this will be confirmed and advertised closer to the event, pending on Covid regulations/restrictions at the time. Once again our P&C would like to thank everyone in the community who has supported our little school in some way, including businesses who continually advertise here in the Bulletin. These funds enable the P&C to support the children's learning experience and also contribute towards rewards days throughout the year.

We are feeling positive looking into the future for Bauple School and if anyone knows of new families in the area or of anyone moving to Bauple, please encourage them to come and see our great school and all it has to offer! Thanks Rebecca Gundry President Bauple State School P&C [email protected]

Life time local to Bauple, Lilian Coyne was recently presented with a special medallion and certificate to honour her service in World War II and mark the 75th Anniversary of the ending of the Second World War, at the Tiaro RSL sub -branch. Lilian served in the Womens Royal Australian Navy as a writer/clerk, primarily as a member of the HMAS Moreton. Lilian is now the only remaining World War II veteran in the Tiaro sub branch at a spritely 94 years of age. Lilian has spent almost her entire life living at Bauple and has been heavily involved with the Bauple Museum and is dedicated to preserving the history of the region. Her memory for details of local families is outstand- ing. So beloved by Bauple locals, Lilian received a drive by ovation on her 94th birthday during lockdown earlier this years. As many locals wanted to make sure she knew how valued she is in this community. Locals deco- rated their vehicles and did a few lapse around Lilians block, while she stood , dress similarly to the late Queen Mother, waving to passersby.

In this and her involvement in the Tiaro RSL Lilian still shows her great sense of humour and mateship. She also received a certificate acknowledging her 30 years of continuous membership and service to RSL Queens- land. Thank you Lilian for all you have given to our community.

The Weather, Turtles and Tiaro Landcare goes International

While society debates the how and when to respond to the effects of climate change, the interconnectedness between wildlife and weather conditions remains indisputable. Now spring is here and with it a rise in the air and river temperatures. This rise in temperature will trig- ger behavioural change in many species including turtles. Male Mary River turtles are now seeking out females to engage in courtship and mating activities. The females will hold the eggs in her body until sufficient rain has fallen so that when she digs her nesting chamber on the riverbank, it will hold its shape and not collapse while she deposits her eggs. Last spring and summer were so dry that the turtles nested on just two occasions, one in October and the other mid-December. This was quite unusual as most years we have enough rain events for at least 6 – 8 nesting events. The incubation of the eggs is affected by temperature, the hotter our summer the quicker the em- bryo develops and hatches. Last summer eggs laid in October took 55 – 60 days to hatch, whereas clutches laid in December only took 51 days to hatch. Interestingly, this difference in the number of incubation days affected the sizes of the hatchlings. The hatchlings that had the longer incubation period weighed between 6 - 9 grams, whereas those that had the shorter incubation period were lighter and weighed between 4 - 7 grams. This difference in size is likely to affect their survival in the river, as Dr Mariana Micheli-Campbell found the smaller Mary River turtles don’t dive as deeply and surface more frequently than the larger hatchlings. The frequency of moving to the surface increases their exposure to predators in the river.

Over the past couple of months, Tiaro Landcare and our turtle project has had international media coverage. The National Geographic published an article in their September edition which you can read online www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2020/09/endangered- mary-river-turtle-boasts-a-mohawk-made-of-algae/ The Guardian chose Tiaro Landcare for their Australian case study of conservation of a threatened species. They did an extensive inter- view with Marilyn which can be heard in the first section of their Full Story podcast www.theguardian.com/australia-news/audio/2020/ sep/08/australias-environment-laws-are-they-about-to-get-even-weaker It is just astounding the profile our project has around the world, and the exposure that it brings to our little district of Tiaro. Tiaro Land- care is also proud to have supported new research which has just been published in a prestigious international Science journal, Biological Conservation. This brings the number of published scientific papers to 18 that Tiaro Landcare has supported in some way. Most can be freely accessed via our website: http://maryriverturtle.tiarolandcare.org.au/knowledge/links/

Our achievements are only possible through co-operation and the good will of many landholders, our members and partnerships with other organisations and universities. We are grateful for the financial support from the Foundation for Australia’s Most Endangered. You too can help by buying our chocolate turtles from either the Tiaro Craft Cottage or Tiaro Meats & Bacon.

Gootchie Girls Gossip During August some of the members had a stall at the Bauple markets and are going again this month as they did quite well and enjoyed the day, we were also fortunate to be allocated a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings in Gympie, although a little stricter with COVID-19 rules and self distancing it was a very profitable day. At the end of August we also were involved with the Gundiah Street Party, we had been invited to hold a stall and the members also manned the free BBQ and tea/coffee stand for the day, over 170 people came through the gates. Three members attended Petrie Gardens and took some home cooked Morning tea for the Residents, then stayed on to chat, which the residents really enjoy as some do not get many visitors. Lola and Lyn attended the Burnett Division Tiaro Units meeting held in Maryborough, the Units are going well and fully occupied. Cr. Phil Truscott attended our September meeting and filled us in regarding the Recycling Shed in Maryborough. At the conclusion of the meeting we held a Cacti work shop where a member, Helen Standage helped everyone pot a plant to take home, after the October meeting we will be making candles, this time under the guidance of another member Christine Stokan. October 16th the Gootchie Girls will be hosting the Burnett Division Executive to be held in the Tiaro Memorial Hall due to more room for self distancing. Our next Branch meeting will be held on Tuesday October 13th at the Gootchie CWA rooms on Gootchie road at 9.30 am and we would welcome new members or just come along for a chat and a cuppa.
