2 DYC Celebrates the New Year With a Bang! By Greg and Tanya

Well, a bang of confetti to say the least! 50+ members and guests had a fantastic time ringing in the New Year at the clubhouse this December 31st at our annual New Year’s Eve party. The evening started off at 6:00pm with a potluck supper. If you were starting a New Year’s diet a little early, this was NOT the place to be, with servings of ribs, spring rolls, cabbage rolls, meatballs, salads, chili, lasagna and lots more! Some people were probably ready for a nap after such a big meal but they preserved partly due to the amazing sounds of our DJ/musical talent, Jon Cyr.

We will have to have Jon back in 2010. Besides spinning amazing tunes all night as our DJ, Jon also brought along his guitar and started the evening off by taking requests and playing/singing a great assortment of songs. He was truly a great entertainer by any standard and the members certainly had a lot of positive comments. The bar also had a Anyone wishing to volunteer for the Entertainment great night with over $1200 in sales. Ryanne was pouring a Committee please Feel free to contact Tanya at specialty drink that evening, a champagne cocktail that went [email protected] over very well! If you’re interested, ask Ryanne of Megan to mix you one next time you’re in the clubhouse.

The last of the party goers rolled out at 2:00am with promises to be back next year. Many thanks go out to all of you who brought food and/or guests to the evening. We definitely want to thank Ryanne for her great work all night, she kept the drinks flowing with next to no wait time to the guests, and did it all with a constant smile! Next year we hope that we’ll see everyone back again as well as some you who couldn’t make it this year! Anyone wishing to volunteer for the Entertainment Committee please feel free to contact Tanya at [email protected]

You might think that the New Year’s Eve party would be the end of the festivities but DYC knows how to ring in a New Year and so the next morning crews were back on site preparing for our New Year’s Day Levee!!

From 1:00-3:00pm we opened our doors to the public and hosted members and guests alike to an afternoon of DYC hospitality. Throughout the course of the day approximately 200+ people enjoyed a great spread of cold meats, rolls, as well as hot and cold appetizers. Dan made up a moose milk punch that members and guests alike must have enjoyed as it seemed to disappear! Mayor Peter Kelly was in attendance and was very interested in both the new clubhouse concept as well as member concerns over the lack of docking space in downtown Halifax. Members from the Owl’s Club made their regular stop by later in the afternoon. Overall the event was very well attended and the bar remained open until the last of the revelers left at 5:00pm.

5 Notes From The Office By Bruce Cake

It has been good to see the payments from the Boating Fee/Marina Fee and surcharge coming in pretty steadily. This makes for a much better cash flow and allows the club to proceed with the spring projects. Let’s hope that there are no outstanding accounts come 15 April, 2010 . The office thanks those who advised us that they did not receive their invoice. Adjustments to this invoice may be required depending on a number of factors such as the boat being sold, departing for the summer before 1 May. Please bear in mind that the boating fee cannot be prorated after 30 April. By Law Review is now taking place, the chairperson being Debbie Mountenay. If you have any suggestions as to changes required to either make the by law more transparent or to suggest additional rules, please make them known sooner rather than latter. The Spring GM, which happens on May 27th, will present the “Notice of Motion” on those amendments that Management is recommending. These amendments will be tabled and are for your information. The actual voting to accept or not accept will happened at the Fall GM, followed by the club seeking approval from the Registry of Joint Stock Companies and the Societies Act, to sanction the changes and then the 2010 book will go to press. This is the regular 5 year review of the By Laws.

6 7 Once A DYC Junior Sailing Student Recently sailed from New Zealand to Australia By John Dalziel

Debbie Dalziel, daughter of 15 year DYC member John Dalziel is seeing the world as she puts her sailing skills, first learned at DYC to good use. The pictures show her in Australia earlier this year. Debbie started her sailing instruction at DYC taking White and Bronze sailing courses from 1996-99. She went on the do a Canadian Coast Guard Inshore Rescue Boat program in Pictou in 2005. She also enjoyed sailing with John on Boreal, but often remarked that it was a little sedate by Debbie’s standards. After finishing her degree at SMU, she went off to New Zealand to work for a year. He love for sailing also drew her to the Greek Islands for a week in the Summer of 2009. In February, 2010, Debbie joined Bernard Lefevre on his Morgan 41 Classic ‘Papy Jovial’ in New Zealand. Bernard has been slowly sailing around the world, and the latest trip took him from New Zealand to Newcastle, then Sydney Australia. Debbie will rejoin PaPY Jovial for the trip around the north coast of Australia to western Australia where she will get off as the Morgan 41 continues his circumnavigation.
