'Game of Thrones' finale breaks illegal download records. Game of Thrones has been setting ratings records for HBO this season, so it’s probably no surprise that the fantasy hit is once again settings records for illegal downloading too. According to piracy-monitoring blog TorrentFreak, the season 4 Thrones finale “The Children” had roughly 1.5 million downloads within just the first 12 hours after the finale aired on the premium cable network, with more than 250,000 users sharing the same file (a record-breaking “swarm” of users). The site estimates that total number of downloads will exceed 7.5 million in the days to come. On HBO, the episode delivered 9.3 million viewers its first night, and is expected to eventually surpass the show’s current season average across all platforms (including the network’s streaming player) of 18.6 million viewers. Earlier this season, Thrones topped The Sopranos to officially rank as the network’s most-watched series of all time, while also ranking as the show’s most illegally downloaded season as well. HBO tends to view piracy from a somewhat grudgingly pragmatic standpoint. The premium network officially condemns theft, yet also recognizes that Thrones is an enormous hit, that content leakage is tough to prevent and that the show’s popularity among pirates is inevitable (countries such as Australia, where viewers don’t receive new episodes via pay cable in a timely manner, tend to be among the biggest piracy territories). HBO’s programming president Michael Lombardo last year told EW that the downloading was a “compliment of sorts,” noting, “the demand is there. And it certainly didn’t negatively impact the DVD sales. [Piracy is] something that comes along with having a wildly successful show on a subscription network.” This year, HBO added this statement: “There are numerous anti-theft tools we utilize and we have significantly shrunk the international distribution window for original programming to practically correspond with the US premiere. Unfortunately, with popularity comes piracy. Good news is Game of Thrones continues to grow significantly and tens of millions are watching the series legally around the world.” Jeff Bewkes, CEO of HBO’s parent company Time Warner, once claimed that piracy resulted in more HBO subscriptions. “ Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world. That’s better than an Emmy.” ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 Now Available for Digital Download with Bonus Features. Game of Thrones has officially come to an end concluding its epic eight seasons run. As the premiere of season 8 of Game of Thrones approaches, torrent sites are labelled the “most . [+] dangerous places on the internet”. (Photo by Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP) Game of Thrones season 8 is set to hit screens on 14 April and lots of people are excited. But not all Game of Thrones fans are prepared to pay the price to watch the HBO drama. So much so that the show is the world’s most torrented, according to download monitoring website TorrentFreak. Even the Guinness Book of Records includes stats on the show, saying that one episode – the finale of season 7, aired on 27 August 2017 – was being shared across more than 400,000 torrents simultaneously. And researchers at Kaspersky Lab have just released new information that concurs: In 2017 and 2018, Game of Thrones led the list of TV shows targeted by cyber criminals to use as a disguise for malware. In 2018, the show accounted for 17% of all infected pirated content, with 20,934 attacked users. This is despite the fact that in 2018, there were no new episodes released. And in particular, you should be cautious about the first episode. The researchers found that every case observed, the malware distributors focused on targeting the first and the last episode of each season, with the launch episode the most actively used. For example, the “Game of Thrones” Season 1 episode “The Winter is Coming” was the most commonly targeted episode of the show. “With the final series of Game of Thrones starting this month, we would like to warn viewers that there will likely be a spike in the amount of malware disguised as new episodes of this show,” David Emm, principal security researcher at Kaspersky Lab UK told me. What’s the problem? Well, first, downloading copyrighted content is illegal. But you don’t need a lecture on that. The issue is that hackers know how big GoT is as a show – and this gives them a larger surface to target. And when torrenting content, people will often fail to check the extensions of the downloaded files where malware could be hiding. Cyber criminals are standing by for an anticipated release such as the final GoT series, says Ian Thornton-Trump, head of cybersecurity at AmTrust Europe. “Exploit kits with links to the Torrents, doggy .zip "viewers" and .exe "players" are all ready and waiting for searches. Stolen content sites are some of the most dangerous places on the internet and the perfect place to test your anti-virus and if your PC is up-to-date.” “Malicious actors will use any current trend to create an opportunity to attack,” says Jake Moore, cyber security expert at ESET. “Knowing that some people will not check the extensions of the downloaded files, hackers hide viruses in the files that will cause havoc to a machine. Such malware could track your keystrokes or extort sensitive data.” Among the consequences, says Moore, cybercriminals could mine personal data such as credit card details, addresses and personal shopping habits to be sold on the black market. What to do. So, is it possible to torrent safely? Sorry, but hell no. “You can minimise risk, of course, but you’re starting with stolen content to begin with so from a legal perspective there are no protections,” says Thronton-Trump. “You can of course take the standard security cautions but if you are not cybersecurity educated you are in very dangerous cyber shark (with lasers) waters.” Researchers at Kaspersky advise you to only use legitimate services with a proven reputation for producing and distributing TV content to view and download shows. In addition, it’s possible to tell what’s dodgy by checking the file extension. “Even if you download TV show episodes from a source you consider trusted and legitimate, the file should have an .avi, .mkv or mp4 extension,” says Kaspsersky. Do not download the file if it is an .exe. Of course, it’s sometimes possible to become tricked by a site that looks legit. It’s important to pay extra attention to a website’s authenticity before streaming or downloading any shows. Confirm that a website is genuine by double-checking the format of the URL or the spelling of the company name before starting any downloads, and ensure the link starts with ‘HTTPS://’, Kaspersky advises. “Do not click on suspicious links, such as those promising an early view of a new episode; check the TV-show schedule and keep track of it,” the researchers say. In an age when there are legal versions of streams – for example, the UK’s NowTV allows you to watch GoT without having to buy a full Sky subscription – there is no excuse. And if you do still insist on illegally streaming or downloading the show, don’t be shocked if it comes with a rather nasty surprise.
