His final clearance was 2.38m. He was the only athlete to clear this height, which resulted in Indiana’s first individual Gold medal in 60 years. Drouin finished with a share of the Bronze medal in the 2012 Olympic Games in the high jump as well. His final clearance that night was 2.29m. Drouin is one of four athletes with Indiana ties to win multiple Olympic medals. 4 Follow the Hoosiers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at IndianaXCTF 2017-18 INDIANA TRACK & FIELD HISTORY & RECORDS HISTORY & RECORDS David Neville dove head-first across the finish line to win the bronze in the 400 meters in Beijing, edging out Christopher Brown of the Bahamas for a 1-2-3 U.S. sweep of the medals in the 400. Two days later, he ran the third leg of the USA’s gold medal effort in the 4x400m relay. The foursome set 2008a new OlympicOLYMPIC Record GOLD in the AND process. BRONZE MEDALIST - DAVID NEVILLE Neville was invited back to Indiana’s Homecoming celebrations as the Grand Marshal. In the third quarter of IU’s win over Northwestern, Neville was introduced to a 30-second standing ovation. 5 Follow the Hoosiers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at IndianaXCTF 2017-18 INDIANA TRACK & FIELD HISTORY & RECORDS HISTORY & RECORDS DROUIN WINS BOWERMAN AWARD IU alum Derek Drouin won the 2013 Bowerman Award, Starting in 2009, The Bowerman Trophy is given to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track & field student-athletes each year. Drouin had to consistently defeat 2012 Olympic silver high jump medalist and rival Erik Kynard for his two NCAA championships in 2013, and he had to surpass equally difficult competition in Arizona’s four-time 2013 NCAA champion distance runner Lawi Lalang and UCLA NCAA champion discus thrower Julian Wruck for The Bowerman Trophy. “I was completely honored to be amongst the finalists here,” he said, looking at the finalists and banners of former winners. “To be on the wall with those names is just surreal, and I can’t even picture my face being up there.” Drouin was interviewed on a high jump mat by ESPN’s John Anderson during the awards ceremony in Orlando.     Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Arkansas claims heptathlon crown in fi nal event, 20th national championship — If Arkansas needed something to kick-start its second day at the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships, it got it early from junior Kevin Lazas. In the fi rst event to be decided on the second and fi nal day of the competition, the heptathlon, Lazas came into the concluding 1,000-me- ter race needing to fi nish within about 4.5 points of Wisconsin junior Japheth Cato to claim the title. “I gave it all I had,” Lazas said, who ended the race by falling across the fi nish line in exhaustion. “If I didn’t win, I would be mad, but there was nothing I could have done. I didn’t have anything left.” Thankfully for the Razorbacks, Lazas fi nished just 3.24 seconds behind Cato, enough to win the heptathlon by the slightest of margins (6,175 points-6,165 in the seven-event competition) and claim 10 points for his Razorbacks in the team competition. “We had a really good night last night, and I knew I had to come out and keep it going,” Lazas said. And as the day went on, the top-ranked Razorbacks indeed kept going. When they ended the night by setting a collegiate record in the 1,600-meter relay, they were simply padding the margin of victory on their fi rst NCAA indoor title since 2006. “To get this done, you need a special group of athletes,” said Arkansas head coach Chris Bucknam, who won his fi rst national champion- ship since arriving in Fayetteville in 2009.

    DIVISION I 103 Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I 2001 Championships OUTDOOR TRACK Highlights Volunteers Are Victorious: Tennessee used a strong performance from its sprinters to edge TCU by a point May 30-June 2 at Oregon. The Volunteers earned their third title with 50 points, as the championship-clinching point was scored by the 1,600-meter relay team in the final event of the meet. Knowing it only had to finish the event to secure the point to break the tie with TCU, Tennessee’s unit passed the baton careful- ly and placed eighth. Justin Gatlin played the key role in getting Tennessee into position to win by capturing the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Gatlin was the meet’s only individual double winner. Sean Lambert supported Gatlin’s effort by finishing fourth in the 100. His position was another important factor in Tennessee’s victory, as he placed just ahead of a pair of TCU competitors. Gatlin and Lambert composed half of the Volunteers’ 400-meter relay team that was second. TCU was led by Darvis Patton, who was third in the 200, fourth in the long jump and sixth in the 100.
