This hire makes sense because Weir knows the landscape and the expectations at UNM. He’s a guy who can coach, recruit and connect with players. That’s rare these days.” - Jeff Goodman, ESPN

“Paul Weir handled the transition from assistant coach to head coach about as smoothly as it can be handled -- winning 28 games in his first year after being promoted at New Mexico State. It was similar to what Brad Stevens did immediately after being promoted at Butler. So the Lobos have hired an accomplished coach with a great reputation.” - Gary Parrish, CBS Sports

Officials: Shawn Lehigh,David Hall,Verne Harris With seven ties and 12 lead changes, Thursday night’s contest was truly a rivalry Technical fouls: New Mexico-None. New Mexico St.-None. Attendance: 7268 battle. The Lobos started out strong with a quick four points but the Aggies roared 2019-20 Men's Basketball. Round: 0. New Mexico vs New Mexico St.. Played at Pa back to get on top by as many as nine midway through first half before the Lobos Score by periods 1st 2nd Total chipped the NM State lead back to two with 4:03 left in the half. UNM outscored New Mexico 37 41 78 the Aggies 12-5 over 5:11 and capped the run with a Lyle three before the final New Mexico St. 39 38 77 media timeout of the first half.

Over the final minutes of the first frame, the Lobos kept playing catchup with NM State, which couldn’t get more than a four-point advantage. A jumper by redshirt- junior Zane Martin with just 23 seconds left made it a two-point game at the half, 39-37 Aggies.

Both teams came out of the locker room on a mission in the second half. NM State’s largest lead was five just 1:39 into the half but over the next two minutes, an 8-2 Lobo run put UNM up by one, 47-46, on a fast-break layup by Maluach. The play marked the first time the Lobos had led since 2:44 into the contest.

NM State quickly took the lead back on a senior Terrell Brown three with 16 minutes left and UNM didn’t regain the lead again until the 11:41 mark when Bragg made a layup to make it 56-54 Lobos.

The game remained tight as neither team led by more than four for the remainder of the contest. UNM got out to a four-point lead on a 7-0 run that was sparked by a three from redshirt-junior Keith McGee and four straight points in the paint by senior Corey Manigault, 67-63 Lobos.

The squads tied the contest three more times, including on a fast-break jumper from Caldwell with just 1:33 left to play, 75-75.

Caldwell was fouled on the play and made the and-1 to put the Lobos back up by one, 76-75, and that’s when things got interesting.

The Aggies went back up by one with 1:17 left, but the next 28 seconds were full of fouls and game stoppage before Bragg hit a pair of free throws to give the Lobos another one-point advantage, 78-77

Throughout the final 43 seconds, the Lobo defense battled on the Aggie end of the court, forcing a pair of turnovers while committing two of its own. The referees continued to review the plays and possession changed back and forth. Just as the Lobos looked to head down court for a chance at extending the lead, the Aggies would get the ball back for another chance at the win.

The Lobo defense however, kept the Aggies from getting off a good shot, without fouling, and NM State senior Shunn Buchanan attempted a 3-point buzzer beater and missed for the 78-77 final.

On the night, the Lobos outshot the Aggies from the floor 53.8 percent to 43.8 percent. The Lobos also outperformed the Aggies from 3-point range 26.7 percent (4-15) to 21.2 percent (7-33).

Both teams collected seven steals, NM State registered 17 assists to UNM’s 10 and the Aggies outrebounded UNM 37-29.

UNM led for just 6:31 of the contest before delivering the loss in the final minutes.

The Lobos are set to return to action on Monday, Nov. 25 and Tuesday, Nov. 26 in Brooklyn New York for the 2019 Roman Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper. The Lobos will kick off play in New York against 2019 Final Four participant (and currently undefeated) Auburn on Monday before taking on either Wisconsin or Richmond Tuesday.

Dec. 22, 2015 - new mexico 78, Auburn 83 - Honolulu, Hawaii Lobos Fall to Auburn in Opening of Diamond Head Classic

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team (7-4) dropped the opening game of the 2015 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic against the Auburn Tigers (6-3), 83-78, Tuesday inside the Stan Sheriff Center.

Elijah Brown led the Lobos with 33 points, a personal best and a season-high for any player. It’s the most points a Lobo has scored since Kendall Williams dropped 46 points on Feb. 23, 2013. Brown shot 10-for-17 from the floor, 6-for-9 from 3-point range and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. He also had seven rebounds and a steal. Cullen Neal scored 21 points and tied Sam Logwood for the assist lead with three. Obij Aget was the team’s leading rebounder with nine boards, seven points and two blocks.

The Lobos started hot in the first half but eventually found themselves in a tough shooting slump. New Mexico led by as much as six points in the first six minutes after starting 5-for-8 from 3-point range. However, the Lobos would find themselves behind after falling into a slump, which eventually put the Lobos at 9-for-30 in the half. Despite the shooting mark, the Lobos forced 12 Auburn turnovers in the first half and only trailed five points at the break, 41-36.

The Lobos responded well from being down at halftime and took the fight to the Tigers. They outscored Auburn 17-6 over the first four minutes of the half to retake their largest lead of the game, 53-47. Auburn played well out of their first called timeout and tied the game at 55 within two minutes.

Another run put the Lobos up by six points again, but New Mexico hit a scoring drought over three minutes and gave up a pair of 3’s that tied the game. With 6:46 left on the clock, neither team would lead by more than a possession until the final minute. Up by a point, Auburn’s Kareem Canty hit a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left. The Lobos committed a turnover on the ensuing possession which led to a breakaway dunk. Brown drained his sixth 3-pointer to keep the game alive with 12 seconds left, but Auburn hit two more free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Overall, the Lobos shot 46.3 percent (25-for-54) from the floor and 45.5 percent (10-for-22) from distance. Auburn shot 47.5 percent (28-for-59), 33.3 percent (10-for-30) from distance.

Tim Williams finished the game with 10 points and four rebounds. In addition to his three assists, Logwood registered five points and four rebounds.

The Lobos will move on to face BYU Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. MT in the Stan Sheriff Center.
