    By:AARaymond H.R.ANo.A2002 RESOLUTION 1 WHEREAS, University of Texas sports fans bade farewell to a 2 renowned college baseball coach with the passing of August Edmun 3 Garrido Jr. on March 15, 2018, at the age of 79; and 4 WHEREAS, Augie Garrido was born in Vallejo, California, on 5 February 6, 1939; a member of the Fresno State University baseball 6 team, he was named all-conference and competed in the 1959 College 7 World Series; following graduation in 1961, he signed with the 8 Cleveland Indians and played six seasons in the minor leagues; and 9 WHEREAS, After launching his coaching career in 1966 at 10 Sierra High School in Tollhouse, California, Mr.AGarrido rose to 11 the college ranks when he became head coach at San Francisco State 12 University in 1969, and he took charge of the Cal Poly program the 13 following year; named head coach at California State University, 14 Fullerton, in 1973, he produced three College World Series 15 champions in 21 total years with the Titans, and he also won two Big 16 10 Conference titles at the University of Illinois; and 17 WHEREAS, Coach Garrido brought his distinctive coaching 18 style to The University of Texas at Austin in 1997; under his 19 guidance, the Longhorns broke a six-year drought with a berth in the 20 2000 College World Series and went on to make seven additional CWS 21 appearances and to claim two national championships; UT also won 22 seven Big 12 Conference titles during his tenure, and when he 23 retired in 2016, he was college baseball 's all-time winningest 24 coach with

    LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 48, No. 3, Apr. 17, 2009) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Joe Dier NCBWA Membership: With the 2008-09 hoops season now in the record books, the collegiate spotlight is focusing more closely on the nation’s baseball diamonds. Though we’re heading into the final month of the season, there are still plenty of twists and turns ahead on the road to Omaha and the 2009 NCAA College World Series. The NCAA will soon be announcing details of next month’s tournament selection announcements naming the regional host sites (May 24) and the 64-team tournament field (May 25). To date, four different teams have claimed the top spot in the NCBWA’s national Division I polls --- Arizona State, Georgia, LSU, and North Carolina. Several other teams have graced the No. 1 position in other national polls. The NCAA’s mid-April RPI listing has Cal State Fullerton leading the 301-team pack, with 19 teams sporting 25-win records through games of April 12. For the record, New Mexico State tops the wins list with a 30-6 mark. As the conference races heat up from coast to coast, the NCBWA will begin the process for naming its All- America teams and the Divk Howser Trophy (see below). We will have a form going out to conference offices and Division I independents in coming days. Last year’s NCBWA-selected team included 56 outstanding baseball athletes, and we want to have the names of all deserving players on the table for consideration for this year’s awards.

We’re once again in the heart of the baseball season, as teams begin to jockey for positions in their conference championships. We’ve had some exciting games in my league this season, and I’m sure the same can be said around the country. One of the first items in this edition is information about voting for the NCBWA All-America Teams. On that topic, please remember to “Get Out The Vote” and submit your selections to Bo Carter for each round during the voting process. No other organization in American does as thorough a job on selecting its postseason honors and I think that is a tribute to the NCBWA and all of its members. A special thanks to Bo for all his hard work! In the last newsletter, I suggested a regular feature clarifying unusual or noteworthy scoring issues that surface during a college baseball game. Included this time is “A Scoring Philosophy”, submitted by the distinguished official scorer of the College World Series in Omaha, Louis J. Spry (see page 8 of this newsletter). Lou has been handling the official duties at the CWS for many years, and his philosophy is a very sound one that should be reviewed by every official scorer. For those of you involved in scoring (or even if you’re not!) please take a moment to look it over – it’s a great guideline.
