And Girls – a Message from Gemma Lord, Parnell Women’s Premier Team and Member of the Board

Gemma Lord – PCC’s Woman’s Chairman and Gemma for our Women Prems

Anything my brother can do, I can do better.

I was in primary school when it was first suggested my younger brother join our local cricket club.

At the time, I remember wondering why my parents had only asked him to play cricket and not me, particularly given his fairly average backyard cricket skills. It of course didn't take long for this sibling rivalry to get the better of me and after some dedicated recruitment from my dad, to create a new girls’ team, both my brother and I were able to begin our first years of cricket together that summer.

Turns out my dad was actually pretty chuffed I decided to pick cricket over netball all those years ago. He ended up coaching most of my junior club teams over the next few seasons and minus a few months, here and there (around those mid-teen years), he's basically been my sounding board for cricket knowledge ever since.

I am the current Women’s Chair on the PCC board and a member of the Club's Premier Women's Squad and it’s fair to say that I wouldn’t be either if I didn’t have a brother.

PCC Premier players, Olivia Lobb and Shirya Naidu, both also members of the Northern Districts Spirit Squad, recently shared with me their introduction into cricket. For Olivia, it was her twin brother who was already playing cricket which empowered her to give cricket a go, and although Shriya was first asked to play cricket by the local girls’ cricket coach, it was her brother already playing cricket for that same club, which opened this pathway for her. Mia Woodfield, one of our fearless junior female cricketers has been playing in a boys’ team ever since she first gave cricket a go. For Mia, it was certainly that sibling rivalry with her two older brothers already playing cricket, which influenced her to start playing.

For myself and for many of the other female cricketers you will see at PCC today, our introduction to cricket was through witnessing our brothers playing the sport. It was seeing our fathers and brothers bond over a shared love for the game, which encouraged us to participate. Anything our brothers could do, we could do too, and cricket ended up being our first and only choice. However, for so many girls, cricket is not even a consideration.

It is time to change the narrative for female cricket.

With a passionate group of volunteers working hard for female cricket at the club and the ongoing support of our board members, we are all dedicated to improving the engagement, recruitment and empowerment of young female cricketers. I am therefore pleased to announce one of our new 2020/21 PCC female cricket initiatives; the Daughters & Dads Programme which is targeted to young girls and their dads, or uncles, brothers, and/or any significant male figure. This free PCC programme is specifically designed to encourage the participation of girls in cricket through a shared bond of the game with their fathers. A concept which has been successful overseas, our sessions will provide a fun and inclusive environment for girls aged between 6-10 years and their dads, or family member.

The programme will involve three consecutive Sunday sessions, 3:30pm - 4:30pm between August the 16th – 30th and will be held in the Terry Jarvis Indoor Centre. Please register your interest to our PCC Director of Cricket, [email protected] (with Daughters & Dads Programme in the subject line) to secure your place and keep an eye out for more information to follow!

Let’s use this opportunity to begin empowering girls to give cricket a go, to bond with your daughters through the love of cricket and to help us develop future PCC Plums.

Kind regards, Gemma Lord PCC Women’s Chairman

P.S. For those eagerly wondering, whilst my brother and I still discuss the intricacies of cricket to this day, he hasn't played cricket for nearly 7 years and still gets cleaned up in backyard cricket by his sisters. *********

“Anything my brother can do, I can do better”.

Gemma – thank you!! And no better example than that set by Emily Drumm playing for Parnell back in 1987/88. Emily played outstandingly and earned selection, not only for Eastern District Under 13 Boys but also for AUCKLAND BOYS!! Editor

Emily Drumm Emily, one of the NZ’s most outstanding cricketers. In her time NZ only played 5 Tests but she scored 433 runs at 144.33 with a highest score of 161*. In 101 ODIs Emily scored 2844 runs at 35.11.including two centuries. She also took 37 at 21.02 – certainly one of New Zealand’s very greatest cricketers.

Lockie in Action

Great to read on Stuff late yesterday that Lockie Ferguson is very positive and raring to go! In all three formats T20s, ODIs AND TESTS!! No NZ bowler is more hostile as Lockie and it is wonderful to know that he is fully fit and ready to do battle on the field. Lockie - all of us at Parnell wish you well!

On the warpath for the Aces

Tickling up Takapuna for Parnell

And a in the IPL

Ollie Pringle – Contract With Auckland Aces

Ollie – with ball and bat At long last, Ollie Pringle has gained selectorial recognition and been awarded a contract with the Auckland Aces. Well deserved indeed – Ollie has performed outstandingly in his two seasons at Parnell and in all three forms of the game. Having been Parnell’s “Cricketer of the Year” in 2018/19, Ollie continued to be one of our most valued players in the season just ended. Ollie’s figures in the three formats being: 2 Dayers 194 runs at 27.71 with 93 highest score BOWLING 21 wickets at 17.33 1 Dayers 193 32.17 66 “ “ 14 16.86 T20 24 8.00 19 “ “ 11 8.18 Totals 411 25.69 46 15.00

Roll on 2020/21 and we wish Ollie every success with the Aces as well as with Parnell!

Ray Toole – Another to Earn a Provincial Contract

Ray bowling for Central Districts last season Ray was at Parnell and St Kentigern College in his early teens but his Dad was transferred by the ANZ Bank to Australia. Ray completed his schooling there, developed his bowling further but then studied at Massey University in Palmerston North. Selected for Manawatu, he had some outstanding performances with the ball – he is a left arm pace bowler – and then picked for Central Districts. Ray debuted for CD this last season, first in the One Day Ford Trophy and then in the Plunket Shield. He took eight 1st Class wickets at 33.25 and has now secured a Contract with CD for 2020/21. We will watch Ray’s progress with a great deal of interest.

Introducing Henry Cameron – Head Coach of our Premier Women

Henry Cameron – photo from the Wairarapa Age We welcome Henry to Parnell to take up the position vacated earlier in the year by Rob Nicol. Henry is an old boy of both Rathkeale College and Palmerston North Boys High, of farming stock and a former cricket of Wairarapa. In recent years he has been coaching in South Australia and the photo above was taken last summer whilst he was fighting fires on Kangaroo Island near his fiancée Georgina’s family farm. Apart from his 4 years in South Australia, Henry also played in England, being the professional for the Dorking CC in Surrey. He is now residing in Remuera and we very much look forward to seeing him around the TJC.

Colourful Lot – Auckland Under 19s each in their own Club Strip They Successfully Defended the National Title Won the Previous Season

Parnell’s Nikith Perera (back, 2nd from right) and Nathan Robinson (front, 3rd from left) Auckland U19s successfully defended the title won in 2018/19 under the captaincy of our Harry Miller. This Team had equal success winning 7 of it’s 8 games and headed 2nd placed Wellington by 9 points. Both Nathan and Nikith would still have been eligible for Auckland U17s but acquitted themselves well in this Tournament. Nathan being dismissed only twice in 6 innings scored 107 runs at 53.50, highest score 60*, and took 5 catches. Nikith, with his left arm spin, took 8 wickets at 26.37 with best match figures of 3/19

Quiz It is some while since we have had a quiz but some questions came to mind during lockdown. Answers, please, to [email protected] – no prizes but get your name up in lights!

QUESTION 1. is the ultimate challenge to cricketers and, for most batsmen, their reputation is made or broken by their performances in their first 10 Test innings. The following are the first 10 innings of some of the greatest batsmen – from Australia, England, India and NZ. Task is to match these names to the performances below (not outs in red) A- L: Virat Kohli, , Bert Sutcliffe, , Don Bradman, Manus Labuschagne Neil Harvey, , Steve Smith, Len Hutton, Stewie Dempster, Sachin Tendulkar

QUESTION 2. LINDSAY HASSETT – former Australian batsman and captain. The article is from a book “200 Seasons of Australian Cricket” sponsored by Ansett Australia and published in 1997, and it contains an error. WHAT IS THAT ERROR?

Hassett played in 43 Tests between 1938 and 1953 scoring 3073 runs at 46.56 with a highest score of 198*

Test Cricket Underway

What a relief to have Test Cricket being played again! Two fascinating Tests with honours even – 1 each – between England and the West Indies. And aren’t we lucky here in NZ to have crowds able to flock to our rugby grounds whereas the Tests in England are being played in bleakly bare arenas. No Barmy Army – not even a sole trumpeter to stir the soul with “Jerusalem”.

The West Indies won the 1st Test comfortably but England struck back thanks to Ben Stokes and Dom Sibley batting in very determined style. Then Stuart Broad, back in the side, showed he was no spent force by having a couple of devastating spells with the ball. England, thanks to Stokes again, set a very tough total to chase and the West Indies faltered. All eyes on the 3rd Test! ,

NOTE: Spark Sport now holds the TV rights to cricket in the UK and in NZ. Heading Spark Sport Cricket here is Sunil Nathu, longstanding Parnell member and, back in 1998/99, an EDCA U13 rep. Much later he put together the Parnell Soldiers which he continues to organise and captain in the Sunday T20 League. We wish Sunil well in this venture and trust that Spark Sport can provide us with top viewing in the years to come!

The Core and the Cricketer. It is a great pleasure and privilege working as a Chiropractor with people of all ages. One particular passion of mine is sport and I really enjoy working with people who are also passionate about their sport. It is such a great way to express our bodies potential, not to mention the minds. This summer we once again are the proud sponsors for the Men’s Parnell Premier Cricket team and for the first time the Women’s Premier Team.

In our care of these teams we do this on performance basis not just an injury treatment basis. What this means is the players are seen regularly each week through the season to have their spine and nervous system assessed. Our objective is to ensure their brains are communicating effectively to their bodies by an efficient nervous system. If there is any interference at the spinal level, the brains messages are distorted as it tries to get its communication from brain to body and the body back to the brain. A common yet serious and usually asymptomatic problem occurs called a Vertebral Subluxation that jeopardises this signalling pathway. In chiropractic we use a technique called an Adjustment to correct this.

Three ways in particular how Chiropractic care helps our cricketers perform have been validated through published Research. 1. Switching on of the core muscles prevent low back and extremity injuries. 2. Joint position sense ( knowing where your limbs are) 3. Muscle fatigue This article will focus on the core. Muscles deep in the abdomen are part of your core stabilising system, and they need to be ‘turned on’ before you lift your arms, so that you remain stable. This should happen very fast and without your conscious awareness.

This is called ‘feed-forward’ activation, because it is pre-planned by the central nervous system. It ensures that movement of the body is balanced, so that no injury takes place.

The researchers found that in a group of 90 healthy students who were Cricketers, 17 of them could not pre-activate their abdominal muscles before they moved their arms. That meant they were more prone to injury. Six months later, the researchers tested 13 of the affected students again, and found that they still couldn’t do it.

So what was going on with these students? To find out, they were given chiropractic assessments, and it was discovered that they all had tightness and restriction of joints in their pelvis. They were subluxated.

And guess what? After Chiropractic adjustments’, there was an almost 40% improvement in their ability to pre- activate their core abdominal muscles. That’s pretty phenomenal!

This study is really important because it has big implications. These students had no existing pain at all. But scientists think that poor control of the core muscles may be the cause of people developing pain or sustaining an injury in the future.

We know that people who have low back pain have delayed activation of their core abdominal muscles when performing various movements. (Just think how one sided bowling is and batting too for that matter). We also know that their brains are much less aware of what is going on in their lower backs.

This means that their brains are not receiving or processing accurate information from the small muscles close to their spine, so their brains have to guess what is going on, and therefore may not be controlling the lower back in an ideal way, which can damage the back further.

This is why chiropractic care is important. It can restore proper communication between your brain and your body, so your brain knows accurately what is going on, and can control your whole body in the best way possible.

This is just one reason why we check the teams regularly through the season and not just wait for injuries to occur like the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. It is hard to be a great cricketer when you are not on the park!

Call the practice today if you would like to be assessed to get the most out of your season and your kids season.

Dr Simon Kelly Mt Eden Chiropractic www.mtedenchiro.co.nz 096388266 Personal recommendations from: PHIL HORNE: “Simon Kelly provided outstanding care for our Premier Men’s squad in 2018/19, and this season Simon has also worked with our Premier Women’s squad. I can personally recommend Simon’s expertise and his involvement played a very significant role in ensuring our players were in improved shape through the season.”

BRAD RODDEN PCC Premier Captain concurs -

“Simon and Mt Eden Chiropractic were a fantastic addition to Parnell Cricket Club last season and we very much appreciate their working with us again this summer. Simon and his team have given their time selflessly to us and provided an excellent service that gives our players every opportunity to stay fit and on the field all season. Simon gets a glowing review from every one of the players that goes in to see his team and his involvement again this season gives us an edge not many teams would be lucky enough to get. On behalf of PCC, thank you very much Simon. Brad”

Phil also adds that Simon is looking forward to playing some matches for our Presidents team

and he has a young son Riley, who plays for The PCC U10 Williamson team.

Kane Williamson at Players Sports

Kane, congratulations on a marvellous 2019/20 season – fantastic successes for the Black Caps apart from the Aussie Tests and ODIs. Impressed that your dog can catch – shame about the IPL but we at Parnell wish you every success in the months and seasons ahead. And, if an Australasian bubble is created, that you wreak revengeful havoc in a return bout with the Aussies!
