ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC PARISH | FINDLAYSTMICHAEL.ORG From our pastor 03 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend we kick o? Catholic Schools Week. School leadership has some exciting events planned for our students. One of those events is a Eucharistic procession through the halls, with Our Lord—in his Real Presence—stopping in each classroom to bless the students, teachers, and aides. This procession promises to be a glorious reminder of what makes Catholic schooling most special, a place where faith and reason are fully integrated, a place where souls are prepared for Eternal Life.

On February 2nd we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This feast is also known as “Candlemas”. We will bless candles at the morning Mass that day for both liturgical and home use. If you would like your candles blessed, please bring them to the 6:45 morning Mass, where there will be tables set up in the Narthex for you to place your candles upon. The candles will be blessed prior to our entrance procession and you can take them home once the liturgy is concluded. The Feast of the Presentation is also a time in which we pray for those in consecrated religious life. We keep in mind and heart our own Dominican sisters!

We have some great volunteers in our parish who work in many diverse areas. On the liturgical side, I am grateful for our volunteers’ willingness to adopt the various liturgical changes I am introducing. Some of these changes are simple and easy to implement. Others require a bit of retraining for the people involved. Our good ministers have responded with “elan!”

The most significant retraining is with the altar servers. For now, we will be working with those servers who were trained previously. Perhaps by late spring we can add a new class of servers, starting with fifth graders but including older students as well if they desire to join. I am also considering developing an additional ministry of young sacristans. My thought is to promote desperately needed priestly and religious vocations through these two ministries, as has been customary, by o?ering girls and boys distinct yet equally important tasks of service. More to come on that later.

I have been very encouraged by our well-trained Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. In this area of service we will make only one small change starting in Lent. This change has to do with when the EMHCs come forward from the congregation to receive and then distribute the Blessed Sacrament. The rubrics call the ministers forth after the priest has completed his reception of Holy Communion. This is the timing we will follow starting on Ash Wednesday. The altar server will ring a bell at the time the priest receives the Precious Blood, and that will signal to the EMHCs that it is time to come forward. Otherwise, everything else regarding the role of the EMHC will remain the same. Thank you, again, for all your hard work in helping our sacred liturgies resemble a little bit of “heaven on earth”.

In another area of parish life, I am happily working toward meeting with the three main advisory councils called for by canon law, namely Finance Council, Pastoral Council, and the School Advisory Council. No leader is successful without consulting wise and prudent people, and so I hold these advisory councils in high importance. I am grateful to those who serve in this role and look forward to receiving good counsel!

Finally, Father Peter will be away on a workshop this week (Feb. 1-5). I will be away the week after, making my annual retreat (Feb. 8-12). Please keep us in your prayers during those times. We promise you our own!

In the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Hertzfeld

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC PARISH | FINDLAYSTMICHAEL.ORG For reflection 07 Most of us are quiet people who desire to live a good and holy life, promote the values and mission of the Gospel as best we can and desire to one day inherit the surprise of life eternal God promises to us. We are not trail blazers. We are simple people who want to do the simple things of life well. But there are others who left a more profound impact along the way of the paths they walked. Folks like Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King, Thomas Merton, Gandhi, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and many others left lasting impacts and legacies. Like , they show us by word and deed who God is and what integrity and a purpose driven life look like. They show us how to be holy. We need Moses people like these to give us inspiration, hope and an example of holy living.

We do not need to do what they did or even mirror their relationship with God. Each one of us is God’s special creation, with a purpose and soul known only to us. We need to learn how to open up and bring, without compromise, our soul- ness to life. We know when someone is authentic and centered because they always point to truth, even though they struggle and sin themselves, and they embody an unspoken timeless wisdom that just sounds and feels right. Jesus taught with this same type of authority and it astonished many who listened. We do not need to move mountains, advance a cause, write books or become notable. All we have to do is become credible witnesses of the faith we profess. Moses people can teach us how to do this.

St. Oscar Romero was an amazing man and a Moses figure for sure. He saw God in the burning bush and brought the flame of Gospel faith to the poorest of the poor, challenging the evils of the society in which he lived. He was tireless and persistent. He must have gotten very close to the problem because it cost him his life. He suspected it would. St. Romero said, “When we leave Mass, we ought to go out the way Moses descended Mt Sinai: with his face shining, with his heart brave and strong to face the world’s diCculties.” We can learn from this wisdom. If we allow the power of the Mass to truly transform us, we will leave that holy encounter changed. Our face will shine, and we will have courage. We can then bring what we have received to life’s challenges. That sounds doable, doesn’t it? Because of the example of our simple holiness, people will be amazed. ©LPi

JANUARY 31, 2021 08 Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist Force of Habit By Sr. Gianna Marie “Wait...when you play sports, clean the convent, and go ice skating, you still wear that...that...that amazing outfit?!” My entire 8th grade class burst out laughing at this remark a few weeks ago, during an “Ask Sister” session. Before I could even answer, from the back of the room another student corrected: “Dude! Don’t you remember?! That “amazing outfit” is called a habit!”

The Dominican habit, which has been virtually unchanged the past 800 years, has beautiful symbolism and rich meaning. “The religious habit, a symbol of consecration, [is to be] simple and modest, at once poor and becoming.” (Perfectae Caritatis, the Vatican II document detailing the renewal of religious life.) It is a daily, visible reminder to both the Sister and the world that we “belong to Another,” that we are truly brides of Christ. During the ceremony in which a postulant receives her new name and the religious habit, the Mother Superior of our congregation hands her each piece of the habit, along with a short exhortation on its meaning and purpose:

Tunic: the symbol of Truth and Charity. May it constantly remind you that you are to put on the Heart of Christ with the purity of the angels as you clothe yourself in His Love. May you wear it pure and undefiled before the Judgement Seat of God.

Belt: by which the angels girded St. : “Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.”

Rosary: the great devotion to the Holy Mother of God and our Mother in the Dominican Order. May the Lord grant you the grace to daily take up your cross and follow Him for your salvation and the salvation of the world. {Just as the swords of old were worn on the left hip, so too our “sword” is worn on the left as a reminder of how we are to fight the evils of this world!}

Medal: the symbol of this Community’s devotion to the Mother of the Eucharistic Christ. May she grant you the grace to live your spiritual motherhood as an ardent Dominican Sister of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist all the way to Heaven.

Scapular: which the Blessed Mother gave to Blessed Reginald; the symbol of obedience and humility, the virtues which are the cornerstone of the Religious Life. {The scapular is blessed with Holy Water during the Mass of First Profession of Vows.}

Veil: the symbol of your desires to live a life totally consecrated to Christ. {A novice wears a white veil, signifying her purity of intention; the professed Sisters wears a black veiel, symbolizing our life of penance and our complete gift of self through the vows.}

Mantle: the symbol of penance. By your total gift of self to the Church, may you be willing to “fill up what is lacking in the su?ering of Christ for the salvation of the world.” {The mantle is worn for special events, such as vows - pictured here - or during the ceremonies of Holy Week.}

As the Church celebrates the feast of the Presentation this week, a day dedicated to religious life, let us pray that all religious men and women be beacons of light and draw many people to Christ! Please continue to pray for your “Findlay Four,” and know that we love and pray for each one of you!

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC PARISH | FINDLAYSTMICHAEL.ORG St. Michael the archangel catholic school 09 Dear St. Michael Parishioners, As you may know, this weekend we kick o? our annual Catholic Schools Week celebration. At Michael School we are very fortunate to have such strong support from our parishioners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who support the school both financially and spiritually. Your support provides us the ability to continue our education in a faith filled environment. As a current eighth grader, I realize how fortunate I am to have attended St. Michael School for the past ten years (from KR-8). With your continued support we look forward to many more years of educating students in grades preschool to 8th grade. Thank you, Connor Rood St. Michael School Student Council President

In 1856, Peter asked to go to the leper colony in Batavia. There, the conditions were barely human, Peter labored daily to bring the lepers the most basic things: food, water, shelter, and medical care. When the came to Surnam around 1855, Peter and another priest chose to join them. In addition to the work with the lepers he began to undertake arduous journeys into the wilderness to evangelize the native South Americans and runaway slaves. The demanding work yielded few converts; yet Peter persevered, certain of the Gospel. Peter died in his beloved Batavia, where he is still revered. “I would gladly send you an account of his great works,” one of his contemporaries wrote, “but his beauty was mainly within, nothing very extraordinary in his daily life!”
