The events of the novel follow directly that of The Game. Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes sail to San Francisco to close up the house and businesses that Mary inherited after her family's death. Throughout her adolescence and adulthood, Mary has blamed herself for the family's fatal automobile accident. A puzzling codicil to the Russells' will, a break-in at the family house, and a failed attempt on Locked Rooms life quickly draw Holmes and eventually Mary Locked Rooms an investigation of the real cause of her parents' death. Holmes and Russell team Locked Rooms with a former Pinkerton agent Dashiell Hammettseveral residents of Chinatownand a cast of irregulars to solve the mystery that has plagued Mary for ten years. As they approach San Francisco, Russell becomes more and more distracted. Holmes concludes from this, and her recurring dreams of falling objects, a faceless man, and locked rooms, that she is repressing some unpleasant memory. Russell denies this and tries to track down the psychiatrist who helped her recover from Locked Rooms trauma she suffered when she precipitated the Locked Rooms accident that killed her family. On the way, she meets a Chinese man, Long, who was the son of her parents' good friends. Long saves her from a murder attempt before introducing himself and saying that his Locked Rooms parents were killed shortly after her own parents died. When Russell finally tracks down the name of her psychiatrist, she learns that she was murdered after Russell departed for England several years ago. Holmes determines from the fact that there was a recent break-in at Russell's house, Russell's anxiety and distraction, the murder of the psychiatrist, and the most recent attempt on Russell's life, that there is Locked Rooms serious amiss. He hires Dashiell Hammett to join his investigation. They conclude that Russell was present during the San Francisco earthquakedespite her denial of this fact, and it was this experience that produced the dream about falling objects. He Locked Rooms from an interview with a survivor of the earthquake that Russell Locked Rooms very frightened by a man with several bandages on his face looking for her father — he had covered up his face because he had been burned while fighting a fire, and this made him appear faceless. Both Russell and Hammett visit the site of the Russell family car accident. Russell then takes a vacation to her family's summer home with her friends Flo Locked Rooms Donny. During the vacation, she recovers her wits enough to realize that somebody is trying to murder her and all the people that could possibly be connected with the car accident that killed her parents, from Long's parents to her psychiatrist. She Locked Rooms the garage that collected the remainder of her parents' car and learns that the brake rod was cut and she is Locked Rooms to blame for their deaths; they were murdered. Russell returns to her city house, fully recovered and determined to find out who was behind all the murders. Using fengshuiwhich Long's family was very interested in, they dig up the garden and find a box with a confession, written by Russell's father, and several valuable items in it. In the Locked Rooms, he says that he helped a man get away with murder of a policeman, looting, and arson to cover up the evidence during the earthquake. The man in question was the one posing as a rescuer with the bandaged face. The letter concludes with the statement that Mr. Russell is going to disclose this information in order to free his conscience, and adds that he warned the person responsible of his intentions. The letter was written only days before the family members' deaths. Holmes had previously set up Irregulars in the form of street kids to spy on Hammett's house in case of an attempt on Hammett's life. They report on a break-in involving the two suspects, the burnt man and his "sister". They end up on a chase that takes them to Chinatown, where one of Long's friends calls on the crowd to prevent them from getting away. Russell confronts the Locked Rooms before they are arrested, and finally unlocks the last "room" — a memory she had of seeing the man near her parents' car the day they Locked Rooms. With the recent growth of on-screen adaptations in both film and serial television forms, there is much new material to be analyzed and discussed. However, recent adaptations have begun exploring new reimaginings of Holmes, discarding his beginnings as the Victorian Gentleman Detective to create a much more flawed and multi-faceted character. Using Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original work as a reference point, this study explores how recent adaptors use both Holmes’s diegetic violin performance and extra-diegetic music. Not only does music in these screen adaptations take the role of narrative agent, it moreover serves to place the character of Holmes into the Romantic Genius archetype.     The Final Problem: Constructing Coherence in the Holmesian Canon CAMILLA ULLELAND HOEL Abstract: The death and resurrection of Sherlock Holmes, a contrarian reading in which Holmes helps the murderer, and the century-long tradition of the Holmesian Great Game with its pseudo-scholarly readings in light of an ironic conviction that Holmes is real and Arthur Conan Doyle merely John Watson’s literary agent. This paper relies on these events in the afterlife of Sherlock Holmes in order to trace an outline of the author function as it applies to the particular case of Doyle as the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. The operations of the author function can be hard to identify in the encounter with the apparently natural unity of the individual work, but these disturbances at the edges of the function make its effects more readily apparent. This article takes as its starting point the apparently strong author figure of the Holmesian Great Game, in which “the canon” is delineated from “apocrypha” in pseudo-religious vocabulary. It argues that while readers willingly discard provisional readings in the face of an incompatible authorial text, the sanctioning authority of the author functions merely as a boundary for interpretation, not as a personal-biographical control over the interpretation itself. On the contrary, the consciously “writerly” reading of the text serves to reinforce the reliance on the text as it is encountered. The clear separation of canon from apocrypha, with the attendant reinforced author function, may have laid the ground not only for the acceptance of contrarian reading, but also for the creation of apocryphal writings like pastiche and fan fiction.

King O Jerusalem (1999) Each Tuesday during this spring’s Twenty Weeks of Buzz , I’ll be posting about a different one of my twenty books, with remarks, reflections, and information about the writing process. (Click on the photos below to enlarge.) A historical mystery would appear to be a contradiction in terms: If something already happened, where’s the mystery in it? But more than merely the event in question, working in an historical setting permits the author to poke at the edges of then-and-now, and to find the reverberations of the present in the past. I once read a memoir about early twentieth century life in Jerusalem, which presented the image of a city cheerfully united under the oppression of the Turks. Muslim, Jewish, and Christian: equally poor, equally oppressed, equally squeezed by the Ottoman grip. The children of the three communities played together, the men worked together, the women marketed together—the author, a Muslim, recalled the tradition of the milk mother, when women with children of like ages would nurse the other’s infant, as a form of insurance in those pre-formula days. Life was far from idyllic, but the concerns that stemmed from the difference in religion were among the lesser barriers to peaceful life. And then came the Great War, and Allenby presenting his victory to the bled-dry British people as a Christmas triumph. The Ottoman Empire was gone from Palestine, leaving the British to extend their own, very different understanding of fair rule to a land with an entirely different history .

    Olivia Votava Undergraduate Murder, Mystery, and Serial Magazines: The Evolution of Detective Stories to Tales of International Crime My greatly adored collection of short stories, novels, and commentary began at my local library one day long ago when I picked out C is for Corpse to listen to on a long car journey. Not long after I began purchasing books from this series starting with A is for Alibi and eventually progressing to J is for Judgement. This was my introduction to the detective story, a fascinating genre that I can’t get enough of. Last semester I took Duke’s Detective Story class, and I must say I think I may be slightly obsessed with detective stories now. This class showed me the wide variety of crime fiction from traditional Golden Age classics and hard-boiled stories to the eventual incorporation of noir and crime dramas. A simple final assignment of writing our own murder mystery where we “killed” the professor turned into so much more, dialing up my interest in detective stories even further. I'm continuing to write more short stories, and I hope to one day submit them to Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and be published. To go from reading Ellery Queen, to learning about how Ellery Queen progressed the industry, to being inspired to publish in their magazine is an incredible journey that makes me want to read more detective novels in hopes that my storytelling abilities will greatly improve. Prior to my detective story class, I was most familiar with crime dramas often adapted to television (Rizzoli & Isles, Bones, Haven).

Arthur Conan Doylen luomat mielikuvitukselliset salapoliisiseikkailut nousivat suuren yleisön suosioon erityisesti eksoottisten rikostapaustensa ansiosta, ja Sherlock Holmes –teollisuus elää ja voi hyvin niin televisiossa, Hollywoodissa kuin kirjallisuudessakin.
