After a month and a half in the Arizona Fall League, they're retreating to their off-season habitats. For centerfielder JaCoby Jones, that is the basement of his parents’ house in Mississippi. For outfielder Christin Stewart, that is Knoxville, Tenn., where he will work out at his alma mater, the University of Tennessee. Jones and Stewart were two of the team’s most-talked-about players in the AFL. Jones finished fourth in batting average among players with at least 80 at-bats, hitting .329 for the Salt River Rafters. He hit one home run with 13 RBIs and five stolen bases, walking seven times and striking out 18. “Just simplifying my approach and making more contact,” Jones said last week in Scottsdale, Ariz. “Trying to get on base as much as possible and use my speed. That’s what I’ve been trying to work on the last couple years, and I feel like, right now, it’s going in the right direction because I feel good in the box now.” Barring an outside addition, Jones will compete with Tyler Collins and Anthony Gose to be the team’s starting centerfielder in the spring.

When John and Ryan Torreson hopped in the car on Tuesday afternoon for the 3-hour trek from metro Detroit to Cleveland, they were wearing Tigers gear. John, a Tigers hat. Ryan, a fleece sweatshirt. And amongst a throng of Indians and Cubs fans filing into Progressive Field for Game 6 of the World Series, the father-son duo from the Macomb area stood out for their attire. “We always wear our Detroit stuff whenever we go out,” Ryan Torreson said. “Always,” John Torreson said. The two described their rooting interest as “indifferent,” but Ryan Torreson admitted, “I think we’re rooting for the Indians because they’re the American League and we want to help them out but either team deserves a win. It’s been so freaking long for either one.” Said John Torreson: “The fans have been razzing us. A lot of razzing, so my comment to the Indians fan was, ‘We came up to support you.’” After the Cubs blasted the Indians, 9-3, one of those waits will end in Game 7 tonight.

At 33, the Detroit Tigers’ right-handed reliever is coming off perhaps his career-worst season, given the circumstances. Last winter, the team signed him to a two-year, $11-million contract to serve as a set-up man. He started slow in spring training, then lost high-leverage situations just a month and a half into the season. He finished with a 7.11 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 54 appearances. Lowe was relegated to a mop-up role near midseason and improved in the second half, but in the lowest leverage of situations. Because he signed a multiyear deal, the Tigers opted against cutting him and were forced to carry an extra reliever for the final months of the season. “He had flashes of that towards the end when (manager) Brad (Ausmus) brought him in certain situations,” general manager Al Avila said last week. “He had flashes of velocity coming back to what it was, at 95 m.p.h.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 15, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1919-The Reds purchase Ray Fisher from the Yankees. Missing the 1918 season after being drafted into the Army, Fisher will go on to play two seasons for the Reds, collecting a 24-16 record, with a 2.47 ERA, 22 complete games, 6 shut outs, and 375.1 innings pitched. MLB.COM Bailey throws first live BP, likely to open season on DL Price says righty 'looked good' in 30-pitch session By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com / [email protected] / @m_sheldon GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey seems likely to open the season on the disabled list, but still keeps progressing well in his rehab from surgery. On Saturday morning, Bailey faced hitters for the first time and threw 30 pitches in live batting practice against teammates Kyle Skipworth and Chris Dominguez. "He looked good," Dominguez said after the session ended. More importantly, Bailey felt good. He is trying to come back from a September operation that repaired a torn flexor mass tendon near his right elbow. "It went fine," Bailey said. "There is still work to be done. It's not like we're going to go out there and throw seven innings yet. There were good points and bad." Bailey wasn't thrilled with all of his mechanics but pleased overall. He wasn't expecting too much from the session, which is scheduled to be the first of two live BPs. "You just go out there and throw, and pitch, and see how it reacts -- if you feel less discomfort or more discomfort.

And that kid is no longer another face in a crowd of thousands to the player. It becomes more personal. The Reds Community Fund has raised and utilized millions of dollars for Cincinnati area baseball and softball programs, youth ballfield renovations and community center upgrades. But just as valuable, and perhaps just as long lasting, is the experience for fans -- especially kids -- to have personal contact with the players, coaching staff and ownership. Baseball's Giving Spirit Michael Lorenzen, Adam Duvall, Joey Votto and Tucker Barnhart are a handful of Reds players that have given back in the community. Players have made unannounced visits to cheer up patients and parents at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, helped out at the MLB Urban Youth Academy, participated in Make-A-Wish kid visits and more. "We had a phenomenal year in terms of the numbers of community impressions that our players made," said Charley Frank, the executive director of the Reds Community Fund. "Culturally, where we've come from over the last 10 years speaks well for the players, Dusty Baker to Bryan Price, to Bob and Phil Castellini and Dick Williams.
