Farewell Mrs Krause

After 36 years in public education and 20 years at Howlong Public School, we say a fond farewell to Mrs Gail Krause, as she heads into retirement.

Mrs Krause spent many years as a classroom teacher at , and , before arriving at Howlong Public School in 1999. In 2009, she became Assistant Principal and then went on to become Relieving Principal in late 2015. Gail, on behalf of the Howlong Public School Community, I would like to acknowledge the many years of hard work and dedication you have given to the education of children.

Your retirement is a celebration, not just for all the years put into the classroom or in more recent years leading our school, but for the dedication you have shown to growing the minds of the next generations. As you step into this new and exciting phase of your life, and you get the time to perfect your putting, perhaps we may even convince you to help out with community sport? I’m sure the students would love to get a few golfing tips from Mrs Krause.

To honour Mrs Krause, please join us in farewelling her at our assembly tomorrow afternoon, followed by a guard of honour and ringing of our old school bell.

Dear Students, Parents, Carers, and the extended Howlong School Community,

Well here I am 20 years and one term down the track at Howlong Public School. What a journey it has been.

Embarking on an adventure in 1999 with my then 6 and 10 year olds, to a new town and new school; leaving behind family and friends, our home town and temporarily a husband; to expand horizons and seek new opportunities was all a little daunting. But what a great decision it was. Though still not “locals”, we all (Alex, Daniel, Ethan and I) feel a strong connection to this community and to the new friendships and “family” that it has brought over the years. Some of our dearest friendships have been formed here.

During my time at Howlong Public School I have had many roles, culminating in being trusted to take on the position of Principal for the last three years. However, firstly and foremost I am privileged to be a teacher and this is the role that has given me the most satisfaction and rewards over the years. I have been a proud teacher in Public Education for over 36 years.

As you can imagine, in that time I have taught (and been educated by) over a thousand students, worked with and learned from hundreds of amazing colleagues, and interacted and formed friendships with thousands of parents, carers and grandparents. My career began at Cootamundra PS and transitioned to my first appointment at Darlington Point PS, Narrandera PS, Howlong PS, PS and back to Howlong PS. All very different schools but all very special to me. I have so many memories to reflect on but the best ones are the smiles on the faces of the students when they achieve success.

I love living in the town where I teach and being able to see the development and achieve- ments of former students. I might not always be able to immediately put a name to the face but am always chuffed when a former student says hello how are you Mrs Krause, (or some- times cheekily, Gail) remember me? Please make sure you do say g’day!

I would like to thank the current Team at HPS, led by my longest surviving Howlong colleague Loretta Pargeter and my favourite past colleagues for their support since I arrived at Howlong. Thank you also to the many parents, students and friends who have wished me well.

The fact that I won’t be attending this school or any school on April 29th and beyond is quite surreal and I’m really not quite sure what retirement will look or feel like for me yet, but I know I will try hard to enjoy it! Kind regards and all the best for the future to our School Community.

Cricket Knockout The crack of a ball colliding with bat or wicket was a common sound this week. I am very proud of the Howlong KO Cricket team and their efforts on the 10th of April in Leeton. The sportsmanship, teamwork and skill of our players proved to be quite a challenge for Leeton Public School. I am very thankful for the support of the parents who braved the two hour drive to give their and other parents children the opportunity to play cricket.

It started with the flip of a coin. Our team captain, Hunter Hall, winning the toss and deciding to bowl. I could already sense the confidence in the air as the boys forwarded onto the field. Hunter Hall took a wicket on his 6th bowl for our first wicket maiden of the game. Then Noah Orchard followed with a quick dispatch of the next opening batsman with Jed Kohn catching a well bowled ball behind. The players from Leeton Public School were losing their nerve as many players were unable to score off the excellent bowling of our team today. Bowlers included Baxter Hamilton, Finn Thompson, Tyler Farnsworth, Harrison Tindall, Robbie Bailey and Jacob Panther. It was excellent to see such a variety of bowlers out on the field. This outstanding effort saw Leeton amass 34 runs in 25 overs setting us up well for our batting after lunch. Our opening batsman Noah Orchard and Dane Fenner were quick to get in some important runs before being bowled out. The partnership between Hunter Hall and Jed Kohn that followed saw many fours hit amongst some singles and doubles to seal the deal. Allowing us to retire at 38 runs with 15 overs remaining to ensure we got home at a reasonable hour. The final score for the game was Leeton 5/34 defeated by Howlong 2/38 with 15 overs remaining.

Thank you to Georgina Bailey, Laura Farnsworth, Rowan Hall, Tamara Panther and the supporters we had in Leeton. It was great to have you along to witness our great result. Finally, well done to the team! As mentioned before your teamwork, support and sportsmanship was quite the sight to behold and I am very proud of the way you conducted yourselves. You have represented Howlong Public School well and I look forward to seeing you rise to the occasion once again as we face Public School in the future. Mr Brodie Cricket KO Coordinator

Premier’s Reading Challenge – Book Review

Diary of a Wimpy Kid – “The Getaway” by Jeff Kinney

“The Getaway” by Jeff Kinney is a hilarious comedy about a boy named Greg Heffley, who only thinks for himself. His actions result in milk-snortingly funny situations. In this book, all Greg wants to do is stay home for Christmas, but his family have other ideas. They go to a place called Isla de Corales, a tropical paradise on the beach. But things go horribly wrong from the very start. With airport troubles and the one thing Greg dreads most; flying in an airplane. Once they get to the resort, Greg realises it might be a good idea after all. However, it doesn’t take long for things to go wrong. Bugs, lizards and other critters turn their world upside down.

This book is a great read for all ages. A hilarious comedy and a good read for starters. If you’re having a bad day, read it! You will feel better because this family is having a worse day than you! I recommend this book for when you are bored. I enjoyed reading “The Getaway” because it is a funny, laugh out loud, relaxing read. So go on. Don’t hold back. Read it for yourself!
