I do acknowledge that in some of the other categories, the vast extended spaces presented a huge challenge to the designers to create the desired ambiences. However, the designers still managed to overcome the challenges and created some amazing interiors that are highly innovative.

I hope MIID would also promote the importance of ‘Green and Sustainable Interior Works’ to the designers as the designers play a critical role in integrating responsible designs in their works. Clear criteria should be formulated and I am looking forward to see more submissions under this category. Currently, it is difficult to judge the works submitted under this category by looking only at the visual presentation.

Overall there is an improvement in terms of the number of entries and quality of work submitted for this year’s MIID Nippon Paint REKA Awards 2015. New Interior Design Concept for KLIA2, Sepang

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project embodies the idea of a ‘Next Generation Hub’, creating a seamless journey for passengers through contemporary interiors of lifestyle products and service. It carries the objective of creating a Leisure Ambience Airport, with emphasis on an ‘Airport in the Mall’ concept. The overall design aims to promote Environmentally Responsible Interior Design (ERID), in-line with the Client’s mission for a ’Green Airport’. The eco-elements are infused with vernacular traits to project a distinctively local identity. This is expressed in many areas such as the rainforest-inspired membrane canopy with LED colour-changing lights, planter boxes integrating benches for seating and random patterns on the floor representing fallen leaves.

JURY CITATION From the perspective of a low cost terminal, there is nothing low cost about it. The judges acknowledge that this is not an easy building/space to handle. The design is interesting and displays a different take and approach on how a low cost terminal should look like.

Toh Yuen Restaurant, Hilton PJ

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Refresh, Renew and Rejuvenate were the notions adopted in creating a brand new dining experience in this newly refurbished restaurant. Traditional Chinese foldable screens and peach blossom patterns were the inspiration for the feature metal sliding screen, with a modern contemporary approach for visual interest and intimacy. The dining area is divided into one main dining hall with four private rooms. The private rooms are an essential part of the Chinese dining culture, accommodating 10 persons per room or combined to accommodate up to 20 people for a larger group settings. The overall atmosphere has been softened with carpets, varied seating arrangements, unique decor and warm lighting, creating a welcoming dining experience.

JURY CITATION A nice take on a Chinese restaurant with a contemporary twist to it. Good detailing held well together to tell a complete story. This is a place that you could revisit over and over again.

Hometown Coffee, Empire Damansara

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The most important criteria in the design brief was to ensure a minimum seating capacity for 100 customers, including a full sized kitchen and barista area on the 88sqm interior and 30sqm alfresco space. To achieve this, a new mezzanine floor was created to house the kitchen, opening up the ground floor and alfresco area to accommodate seating for a total of 117 customers, exceeding the client’s requirement. At the same time, the double volume space created an airy atmosphere to draw patrons into the dining area.

To distinguish this outlet from other Hometown shop concepts, a dark grey tone was used as the base colour to be cohesive with the shopping centre’s architecture. Carefully selected task and mood lighting with special feature fittings create a trendy and cosy environment for the customers.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Wondermama X is positioned as the hip younger sibling of the original retro-themed Wondermama restaurant in Bangsar. The restaurant space was converted from the vacant lift core of an abandoned hotel project. The client grew up in the seventies and wanted to reinterpret their childhood memories in a contemporary urban setting. Nostalgic local architectural elements, such as the mix-patterned jalousie windows, were borrowed from a typical residence from the seventies and recomposed and collaged to evoke those childhood memories. 23 Terrace PROJECT DESCRIPTION 23 Terrace is a new double-storey terrace house reconfigured in place of its single- storey predecessor. During day, the façade is a typical contemporary terrace house with large openings, glass balustrade and minimalist security door grille and gate. At dusk, the house transforms into a lantern, casting surrealistic shadows on the cement rendered porch.

The renovation process is a simple design exercise of “form follows function‟ where the needs of the occupants takes precedence. The living area has a feature wall of exposed brick, which is one of the few remnants from the old house. Ten-feet high walls flank the entire length of the terrace, with open-faced brick walls bordering the grass strip for privacy and acoustic reasons.

This new form and height of 23 Terrace are rejuvenating revisions of the 70’s single-storey terrace. It is a baby step towards the greening of the neighbourhood, an attempt to educate the community about the importance of green retrofitting.

Studio @ Home

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The clients were in dire need of a proper working space for their business at home, which could allow them to fulfil their full-time parenting role. As a pragmatic and cost efficient solution, the existing under-utilised, 4.5m x 8m covered side terrace of the house was redesigned to cater for a new, fully functional studio space. This space can be transformed into a small discussion or reception area when required, as well as into a play area for children or a place for gatherings during weekends or holidays.

The colour palette and materials of all the interior fittings were carefully selected to turn the studio into a comfortable and cosy ‘loft’ space. The materials used are raw both in terms of aesthetic and function, in addition to being locally sourced. The diaphanous quality of the interior renders the space pure and harmonious.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The site is a 1900s townhouse located within the old town centre. Its original façade is preserved to express the uniqueness and individuality of this heritage building. The proposed design also maintains its interiors as much as possible, but gives a new life to each space through the choice of materials and finishes.

With the intention to preserve that early century ambience, the designer uses only locally sourced materials, furniture and fittings. In order to use all existing timber materials on- site, these are engraved and re-used as walls panels. These newly revived surfaces softly reflect natural lighting throughout the interior, brightening darker areas and reducing the need for artificial daylighting.

Cycling and the lifestyle associated with this activity is used here to create a brand and identity for this new premise, offering a different experience for travellers to discover the other side of Ipoh – the one created before the arrival of motorised vehicles.

NAME Coffee Couture ESTHER TAN JEN CHZE PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project aims to resurrect the art of sewing, which is at risk of being an obsolete and COLLEGE / UNIVERSITY a dying craft today. By creating a space to receive both lovers of sewing and coffee, the TAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY designer is proposing a space that nurtures senses and skills.

Located above the bar is the coffee station, accessible by a ladder. Most of the coffee beans are roasted in-house and a ventilation pipe is installed from the inside, allowing the aroma of coffee beans to fill the entire space. Just next to this is a custom-made “textile bar”, complete with the required gears & industrial chains, which allows for easy storage as well as the ease of cutting and obtaining the required fabric. The studio/dining area on the mezzanine feature one-piece tables that run from the ceiling to the floor. These are all attached to a track and can be pushed back and forth voluntarily. The ambience of an industrious working space is evoked by the use of metal finishes throughout the entire space in the form of cladding.

JURY CITATION Initially, the Judges were confused and had to really look to understand the overall design concept of the space. Taking the elements of old sewing machines and textiles was good. Including the concept in the name of the project would have been a bonus.
