Peirse-Duncombe THE PEREGRINE FALCON by Derek Ratcliffe Or Ratcliffe's monograph has been eagerly awaited and now more than meets expectations. Not only is this a comprehensive, definitive study by an international authority, it is also a well composed work with an easy flow that , conceals its author's skilled presentation. Today Derek Ratcliffe is the Chief Scientist of the Nature ConservanCy Council but the Peregrine has been his bird since his boyhood days roaming the Lake District fells. More recently he became the leading figure 'in the major conservation breakthrough which identified the low breeding . success of so many birds of prey with the effects of organochlorine insecticides. Donald Watson contributes three colour plates and many line drawings, and there are maps, diagrams and 60 photographs, plus a colour photograph of eggs. 416 pages plus 36 plates, £12.00 net T&ADPOYSER SCOTTISH BIRDS THE JOURNAL OF THE SCOTTISH ORNITHOLOGISTS' CLUB VoL 11 No. 4 Winter 1980 Edited by D. J. Bates Bird mortality following the Esso Bernicia oil spill, Shetland, December 1978 M. HEUBECK and M. G. RICHARDSON (Plate 13) The latest chapter on the blacker side of the oil boom reports how the industry again failed to cope with a spill that left over 3,700 birds dead. The casualty list was sur prisingly varied, ranging from divers to buntings. The Great Northern Diver Losses are particularly worrying in view of the small European population. Just over a month after opening, the Sullom Voe oil ter minal (Shetland) experienced its hrst major oil spill when heavy fuel oil leaked from the 190,000 tonne tanker Esso Bermcia. The spillage occurred around midnight on 30th December during the final stages of berthing after one of the three attendant harbour tugs caught fire and released its tow. The Esso Bernicia struck a loading jetty sustaining an Bm gash in her own fuel tanks and spilling 1,174 tonnes ot oil into the sea.

  • Barassie Primary Newsletter August 2019
BARASSIE PRIMARY NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2019 Welcome to our new families and pupils and welcome back to our returning families. It is great to see the children settled in their new classes and enthusiastic about learning in school. Our staff had two stimulating days of professional learning to start the session and ensure we were ready for the year ahead. We are excited to be using a play based approach to learning in P1 and P2/1 with all P2 children experiencing this approach for part of their time in school. We encourage active learning indoors and out at all stages and know that this increases the levels of enjoyment and engagement in lessons. Families can find out more at Meet the Teacher on Thursday 29 August at 3.15pm and P1 families are invited to an information evening on Wednesday 4 September at 6.30pm. The focus of all staff from the beginning of term is building very good relationships with children and their families. Our whole school approach to behaviour will continue to focus on being Ready to learn, Respectful and Safe. We would encourage families to discuss with your children what being ready, respectful and safe might look like at home. STAFFING UPDATE We have two new School Assistants. Mrs Baker who is working full time and replaces Mr McKenna who gained a permanent post at Dalmilling Primary, and Mrs Coulter who will work on a Friday as Mrs Swan has reduced to working four days each week. ANNUAL DATA FORMS These must be returned before children can take part in Educational Visits.
