Gibbs, Ph.D. Gil Greene, Ph.D. Copyrighted by Janet Melcher 2013 Abstract This study was designed to learn about what is helpful to people who have lost a loved one as a result of some unlawful act (for example, murder or manslaughter). Those affected by the loss of a loved one due to violent crime are called survivors. Of particular interest in this study was the survivor’s decision to use or not to use Ohio’s restorative justice program known as Victim Offender Dialogue (VOD), a carefully structured procedure that allows the survivor to meet with the offender to ask questions and share information. To provide the context for this qualitative research, literature on forgiveness as a mental health intervention, restorative justice procedures and forgiveness, moral development with its connection to forgiveness, religious coping, and after death communications was reviewed. In this study, survivors’ views about forgiveness were explored with attention to ideas about and experiences of forgiveness for survivors who did participate in VOD and for those who did not. Participants also were asked generally what helped them after the loss and specifically what role spirituality played in their response to the crime. In addition, participants were invited to tell if they had a sense of presence of the deceased or some communication with the deceased loved one. Research participants included: eight survivors who completed VOD and were recruited through the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Office of Victim Services; seven survivors who have not gone through a VOD process that were recruited ii through various support groups in Ohio; six VOD facilitators; and key informant Ken Czillinger, one of the founders of Parents of Murdered Children. Data were gathered by conducting an individual in- person semi-structured interview designed to encourage each participant to tell her own story about the crime and how she coped. Also, VOD facilitators participated in an individual in-person interview and VOD files were reviewed. Each participant was available for a brief follow-up phone contact as well. Narrative methods were used to analyze the data. While most survivors remained acutely aware of the absence of the lost loved one, many also reported a return to a day-to-day good emotional functioning. Positive emotional functioning was associated with achieving emotional detachment from the offender. Survivors arrived at this state by various means such as forgiveness, positive religious coping, and refusing to allow the offender to take their lives, too. Differences in the approach to healing were observed between the two survivor groups with five VOD survivors stating that they forgave the offender and no Support Group survivors claiming definitive forgiveness. With regard to communication from the deceased, overall ten participants indicated that either they or a family member had a sense of having some kind of communication or unusual experience that they connected to the deceased, mostly of a helpful nature. Finally, details of the paths to healing with an eye toward fairness thinking and empathy for the offender are highlighted along with suggestions for possible helping interventions based on the experiences of these exemplar participants. iii Acknowledgments Of course, no dissertation comes to the place of completion without many individuals contributing to the process in significant ways. Also, I was quite privileged to take classes on moral development and child development with Ohio State’s Developmental Psychology Professor, John C. Gibbs, and later I was pleased that he agreed to be on the dissertation committee. Dr. Gibbs taught me how to think about the challenges involved in moral development and he continues to raise thought provoking questions about the place of forgiveness in the moral realm. What I learned from Dr. Gibbs strongly influenced the approach to the topics of forgiveness and fairness discussed in this dissertation and I expect that his teachings will continue to have a profound impact on any future scholarly undertakings. Professor Amy Zaharlick was part of the dissertation committee early in the process. Dr. Zaharlick provided great feedback and sensible suggestions about how to set up the research. I am glad that I had iv the opportunity to learn from this master researcher. Since Dr. Zaharlick is now retired from her university position, Professor Gil Greene stepped up to participate on the committee. Dr. Greene’s input was especially helpful for editing and bringing the disparate pieces of the dissertation together to create a more coherent whole. His perceptive suggestions based upon his great range of social work knowledge helped add quality to my final writing. Also, Dr. Susan Kline, Associate Professor in the School of Communication, kindly agreed to serve as the Graduate School Representative for the final oral exam. I appreciate her willingness to serve and I tried to incorporate answers to some of the questions she raised in the finished dissertation. In addition to these professors who took the time to directly participate in the dissertation process, I believe that all of the Ohio State College of Social Work faculty involved in my doctoral level course work played an important role in helping me prepare for this research project. I hope this final product will be a meaningful reflection of the valuable lessons learned from all of my College of Social Work professors. Along with the many professors who supported this dissertation work, a few Ohio State staff members deserve credit for making the final result possible. PhD Program Coordinator, Jennifer Nakayama, provided valuable assistance throughout the time I participated in the doctoral program. By writing a play about the 1870 Baker Massacre, and staging it with Blackfoot students from the Kainai Board of Education school system, I have successfully found another way to engage First Nation students from Kindergarten through grade 12. This is the first time the story of the Baker Massacre has been told from the perspective of Blackfoot children. A good portion of the research was taken from oral accounts of actual descendents of the survivors of the massacre. Most of the survivors were young children, including my great-great grandmother, Holy Bear Woman. The Baker Massacre became a forgotten and lost story. However, by performing this play to an audience of approximately 1000 over the course of six performances, including a debut performance in New York City, there is a good chance that this story will not fall into obscurity again. The process of researching, writing and staging this play also had a major impact on my own personal healing and well-being.

In all societies, however, the issue of death brings into focus certain fundamental cultural values. The various rituals and ceremonies that are performed are primarily concerned with the explanation, validation and integration of a peoples’ view of the world. In this section, the significance of various symbolic forms of behaviour and practices associated with death are examined before going on to describe the richness and variety of funeral rituals performed according to the tenets of some of the major religions of the world. THE SYMBOLS OF DEATH Social scientists have noted that of all the rites of passage, death is most strongly associated with symbols that express the core life values sacred to a society. Some of the uniformities underlying funeral practices and the symbolic representations of death and mourning in different cultures are examined below: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF COLOUR When viewed from a cross-cultural perspective, colour has been used almost universally to symbolise both the grief and trauma related to death as well as the notion of ‘eternal life’ and ‘vitality’. Black, with its traditional association with gloom and darkness, has been the customary colour of mourning for men and women in Britain since the fourteenth century. However, it is important to note that though there is widespread use of black to represent death, it is not the universal colour of mourning; neither has it always provided the funeral hue even in Western societies.

    What you can do for a bereaved friend. When death touches the family of someone we love, we often ask the question, “Is there anything I can do?” We mean it sincerely, but sometimes we simply don’t know what to do, and the person we want to help may be hesitant to ask for anything specific – or may simply not be able to identify the help they need. Remember, people often find it difficult to ask for help. It is vitally important to volunteer. Following are a number of suggestions. Choose only the tasks you know you can do or that are appropriate to your relationship. During the first few days or at funeral time… - Be a house sitter when the family is away from the home making funeral arrangements, attending the visitation or attending the funeral or memorial service. - If the death occurs out-of-town and your friend is leaving for the funeral, pick up their mail and newspaper, water plants and watch the house. - Arrange for the care of their pets. - Answer the telephone. Make a list of names, addresses and telephone numbers of people who call, stop at the house or offer to help. Take accurate messages and give brief, correct information. - Telephone relatives and friends, notify them of the death and the funeral arrangements. - Clean the house and/or yard in preparation for people coming for the funeral. - If needed, do the laundry. - Keep a written record of food brought to the house including names, addresses, telephone numbers, the type of food they brought and a description of the container.

In basic terms – Death Anniversary is a performance in which one is trying to communicate with a person who cannot hear him. I had that experience almost every time I was showing my work internationally. They (art catalogue text writers, curators, journalists, etc.) always read my work in the geopolitical context of the country I represent. So no matter what my work was about – it was seen only in the light of this Balkan communism- post-communism, war-post-war, anti-modern tradition, weird local habits, and described in terms of cultural, social and political references related to the place I come from. The question is - is this context unavoidably related to me and my work? Sometimes it really is. But that is not a ‘default’ situation of my art production, nor a starting point of each of my works.‘Death Anniversary’ is a way of showing what it looks like to be an artist with geopolitical burden. This is the situation in which you cannot walk on 1 the international art scene as a free man/artist – because you are always wearing this heavy load of your origin. This should be quite inappropriate and illogical for the in- ternational art scene – but unfortunately this is something a certain kind of artists cannot avoid. I guess we could say that it is not given to us to be seen as artists, but rather as cultural phenomena from a certain part of the world – an exotic and peripheral part at that.

The Dynamic was sustained on April 11th, headed by those brilliant social media satirists Jasmine Pender and Jonas Golland. This was a grand foray into the multi-medic area. The set opened in darkness, with a comment about having had an awful night. It then proceeded into the ‘daylight’ media nightmare. There was the great feeling of a computer crash or jam, with the various channels crossing, interrupting each other – Notifications, Friend Requests – in which there is thinly veiled surveillance in the form of ‘citizenship ranking’ enquiries. In this sketch, the Social Media channels are animated and personified, starkly similar to a pair of petulant, squabbling adolescents always desperate to interrupt each other. Many sites are offensively intrusive, asking for users’ intimate personal details for registration purposes. Social media are also saturated with generally spurious medications and cosmetics. The absurdity of one of the latter is highlit by the inversion phrase ‘mountains into molehills’ and the ‘brand name’ Instaplump. After the first interval bell, Jonas assumes the role of investigator/spy. The couple then seem to assume the roles of adjudicators, monitoring each other’s performances, and effects on the audiences.

The Hindu religion teaches that death is a natural part of a continuous cycle of rebirth.The death rituals serve a two- fold purpose: to prepare the soul for its onward journey and assist the soul of the deceased to transition to the next stage peacefully and to assist the mourners in grieving the loss and letting go of the hold on the deceased soul. It is the responsibility of the loved ones to help the deceased soul move onward to its eternal home. The rituals and prayers seek to instill an energy of silence, stillness and peacefulness to soothe the loved ones in grief, so they can help in that journey. In these unprecedented challenging times, this should be used as a general guide of suggestions and options which may help. This is provided in light of common hindu rituals in India and with guidance from masters and gurus. It is a general statement on what may be done to help grieve in this difficult time. If possible: • Take a framed photograph of the deceased: the death rituals of bathing the body and dressing it/anointing it with a tikka may be done to the photograph. If possible, dress with a garland or place flowers on or around it. • Please light a tealight or candle and keep a vessel with water nearby. Keep the water for at least 24-48 hours, and keep the candle lit as long as you are safely able to as well.
