At Kliphouse a little island of The Block House P12 Frenchness was created which the French in France can take some lessons from when they celebrate Bastille Day on 14 July. Most of the estimated 500 visitors on the day added some French style to their outfits: Berets and scarves abounded as did tiny curled moustaches (on the Lions particularly) The cosy garden of Kliphouse can hold a surprising number of people. They did eventually run out of seating but informal picnics formed between the roses. It was meant to be a gesellige kuier day and that it certainly was. Acquaintances and friends sat for hours catching up on the news and solving the problems of the world and listening to Phillipe from Benin. All the food was Frenchstyle: Savoury crepes and croissants (Lions) coq au vin (Rotary) cheese platters (Terri Gray) quiches and pates (Jeann Dickinson) giant crepes with nutella (Marcel) onion soup (Irma and Johan) gin tasting (Andrew Downes). Wine and coffee, of course. When the food ran out soon after 1 o'clock they started making smoked salmon on rye. Celebrating the French national day has become a Kliphouse tradition. Irma Coetzee has been a Francophile since visiting there in the early 80s and she has made several trips to the country since. – Ed WAM is Coming Save the dates the weekend of 7 and 8 September. Here one of the appreciative audience is browsing his CDs Verna Whittals, fairly recent arrivals at the HRV. They chose Henley partly because Verna's brother, Kenny Miller, of Gloucester House in Hearn Road is here but also because the HRV is the best retirement village they found. Graham and two helpers are changing the landscape at the river front of the HRV. They have cut all the reeds and are busy removing the roots. They have dug channels so that the river water no longer sits and stagnates there. Once again, for the first time in several years, the river is flowing briskly. It smells and looks better. This is an ongoing project. Look out for pics in future issues of the Herald. Lining up for a pic at the Bastille Day event are the four Normas. Since her sister, Joy Kirsten, left to stay with her family in Kenton, Norma decided it was time to descend on her son and his family (Her other son also lives in the country). Norma was well known in bowling circles. She was particularly involved with developing young players and generally promoting an interest in bowling in the youth.
