  • A's News Clips, Saturday, April 21, 2012 Oakland A's Fall To
A’s News Clips, Saturday, April 21, 2012 Oakland A's fall to Cleveland Indians 4-3 By Carl Steward, Oakland Tribune Yoenis Cespedes had a major league first Friday night with his first three-hit game. Alas, according to A's starter Graham Godfrey, he also had a first -- the worst control game of his life. "That may have been the most walks I've ever given up in a game," Godfrey said after he issued five bases on balls and hit two batters in the A's 4-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians before 14,340 fans at the Oakland Coliseum. Godfrey (0-3) gave up all four Indians runs, and three of those runs were a result of batters he either walked or hit. What was particularly frustrating was that he said he had good stuff but just couldn't command it. "Everything felt great, and I made a lot of good pitches that ended up not being called a strike," he said. "I'm a control guy, and that's very uncharacteristic of me. There's something not right, but I still have a lot of confidence in my stuff and I'm looking forward to my next outing." To wit, Godfrey walked just five batters in 25 innings in 2011 with the A's (five appearances, four starts). "He got behind some guys and he's done that a little bit in the past, but he seems to be able to recover," manager Bob Melvin said. "It didn't get out of hand tonight, but it was not his best effort." Former Oakland third baseman Jack Hannahan drove in three of the Indians' runs with a second-inning sacrifice fly and a two-run double in the fourth.

Subjects, 159 10th graders from Illinois and Long Island, read a target passage and then were assessedon baseball knowledge and vocabulary knowledge. Vocabulary knowledge tendedto affect the number of units recalled overall, whereas prior knowledge influenced which units were recalled. Prior topic knowledge influenced whether subjects produced a "gist" statement in their recall and how well they recalled numbers relevant to Seaver's career. High-knowledge subjects also tended to focus moreon information given about Seaver's career than did low-knowledge subjects.

We appreciate your willingness to help. In the voters packet you will find the official ballot, an example ballot, and the nominee biographies: 1. The official ballot is what you return to us. Please return to us no later than Mon- day, February 11. 2. The example ballot’s purpose is to demonstrate the balloting rules. Obviously the names on the example ballot are not the nominee names. That was done to prevent you from being biased by the rankings you see there. 3. Each nominee has a profile in the biography packet. Some are more detailed than others and reflect what we received from the institutions and/or obtained in our own research. The ballot instructions are somewhat detailed, so be sure to read the directions at the top of the official ballot. Use the example ballot as a reference. Please try to consider the nominees based on their collegiate careers. In many cases nominees have gone on to professional careers but keep the focus on his college career as a player and/or coach. The Veterans (pre-1947) nominees often lack biographical details relative to those in the post-1947 categories. In those cases, the criteria may take on a broader spectrum to include the impact they had on the game/history of college baseball, etc.

  • Joe Torre Joe Torre Was Named Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 1, 2007, Becoming the 26Th Manager in Team History
Joe Torre Joe Torre was named manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 1, 2007, becoming the 26th manager in team history. Prior to the joining the Dodgers, Torre spent the past twelve seasons as manager of the New York Yankees. In 2008, Torre led the Dodgers to the division title and the club won their first playoff series in 20 years. In becoming the 31st manager in Yankees team history, he joined Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra and Dallas Green as the fourth skipper to wear both Yankee and New York Met uniforms. Torre's Yankees made the playoffs every year under his tenure. He led the Yankees to 6 World Series appearances during the 12 year span, winning 4 World Series Championships, most recently in 2000. The 2000 title was the 26th overall for the Yankees, the most of any team in professional sports. They are just the third team to win four titles in five years, the other two also being Yankees teams. The Bronx Bombers captured four straight titles beginning in 1936 and later won five consecutive championships from 1949-53. The Yankees also became the first team since the Oakland Athletics from 1972-74 to win three straight world titles. Torre led the 1996 Yankees to their first World Series title since 1978. He was named Sportsman of the Year by The Sporting News and Co-American League Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America. After a return to post-season competition in 1997, Torre led the Yankees to 114 wins during the 1998 regular season, an American League record, and a four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres in the 1998 World Series.

Broshuis* Abstract Collective bargaining has significantly altered the landscape of labor relations in organized baseball. While its impact on the life of the major league player has garnered much discussion, its impact on the majority of professional baseball players—those toiling in the minor leagues—has re- ceived scant attention. Yet an examination of every collective bargaining agreement between players and owners since the original 1968 Basic Agree- ment reveals that collective bargaining has greatly impacted minor league players, even though the Major League Baseball Players Association does not represent them. While a few of the effects of collective bargaining on the minor league player have been positive, the last two agreements have estab- lished a dangerous trend in which the Players Association consciously con- cedes an issue with negative implications for minor leaguers in order to receive something positive for major leaguers. Armed with a court-awarded antitrust exemption solidified by legisla- tion, Major League Baseball has continually and systematically exploited mi- * Prior to law school, the author played six years as a pitcher in the San Francisco Giants’ minor league system and wrote about life in the minors for The Sporting News and Baseball America. He has represented players as an agent and is a J.D. Candidate, 2013, at Saint Louis University School of Law. The author would like to thank Professor Susan A. FitzGibbon, Director, William C.
