In Utah, the program is co-coordinated by Lori Spears (USU) and Clint Burfitt (UDAF). Early and Ongoing Monitoring of Invasive Pests In Utah, agricultural commodities are largely grown along the major N-S interstate highway, which makes this state vulnerable to introduced exotic pests and increases the likelihood of their spread once introduced. It is therefore critical that Utah crops be safeguarded and regularly monitored for invasive pests. In 2013, the Utah Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS) program will survey agricultural and horticultural crops for various exotic pests, including insects and plant pathogens, and will set and monitor more than 400 traps statewide.

    Chapter 15 Chapter 15 CENTRAL AND EASTERN AFRICA: OVERVIEW The region as treated here is comprised mainly of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa) (formerly Zaire), Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The wide variety of insects eaten includes at least 163 species, 121 genera, 34 families and 10 orders. Of this group the specific identity is known for 128 species, only the generic identity for another 21, only the family identity of another 12 and only the order identity of one. Gomez et al (1961) estimated that insects furnished 10% of the animal proteins produced annually in Congo (Kinshasa). Yet, in this region, as in others, insect use has been greatly under-reported and under-studied. Until recently, for example, the specific identity was known for fewer than twenty species of insects used in Congo (Kinshasa), but, in a careful study confined only to caterpillars and only to the southern part of the country, Malaisse and Parent (1980) distinguished 35 species of caterpillars used as food. The extent of insect use throughout the region is probably similar to that in Congo (Kinshasa) and Zambia, the best-studied countries. Research is needed. Caterpillars and termites are the most widely marketed insects in the region, but many others are also important from the food standpoint, nutritionally, economically or ecologically. As stated by this author (DeFoliart 1989): "One can't help but wonder what the ecological and nutritional maps of Africa might look like today if more effort had been directed toward developing some of these caterpillar, termite, and other food insect resources." The inclusion of food insects in the Africa-wide Exhibition on Indigenous Food Technologies held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1995 is indicative of the resurgence of interest in this resource by the scientific community of the continent.

Often simple practices can be effective, once the biology and habits of the insect are understood. Many of the insects found in homes are merely casual invaders that do not reproduce nor pose a threat to humans, stored food or furnishings. These may often originate from conditions that exist outside the dwelling. Other insects found in homes may be controlled by sanitation and household maintenance, such as altering potential breeding areas (e.g., leaky faucets, spilled food, effective screening).

For those of you looking for accommodation in Knysna, Dave forwarded the flowing link: Places to stay in Knysna We have found, at recent LepSoc Africa Conferences, that presentation of the annual reports of various LSA officers takes up most, if not all, of the three-hours that have traditionally been allocated to the Annual General Meeting. At last year’s conference in Hermannsburg, there was dissatisfaction about the time available for general discussion among members present at the meeting. This year, we are going to do it differently! Using the approach that has been adopted by the Entomological Society of Southern Africa (Entsocsa), the reports of office bearers will be circulated to the entire LepSoc Africa membership at least two weeks before the AGM. At the AGM, a condensed summary of the various reports will be presented for ratification, following which there will be a brief discussion. Significant issues, that require resolution at the AGM, should be raised by LSA members prior to the meeting and the salient points submitted for discussion under Matters Arising. Missing Links… A few people pointed out that a couple of the links in July’s newsletter didn’t work. I’ve corrected this below: Colotis ungemachi Arnold Schultze Steve Collins noted that, in July’s newsletter, I’d correctly captioned a photo from Sudheer Kommana as Baliochila hildegarda, but that this species is not found in Ghana as I’d indicated.

Zoosystema 35 (4): 537-549. http://dx.doi.org/10.5252/z2013n4a7 ABSTRACT Augosoma centaurus Fabricius, 1775 (Melolonthidae: Dynastinae), one of the largest Scarabaeoid beetles of the Ethiopian Region, is classified in the tribe Dynastini MacLeay, 1819, principally on the basis of morphological characters of the male: large frontal and pronotal horns, and enlargement of fore legs. With the exception of A. centaurus, the 62 species of this tribe belong to ten genera grouped in Oriental plus Australasian and Neotropical regions. We performed cytogenetic studies of A. centaurus and several Asian and Neotropical species of Dynastini, in addition to species belonging to other sub-families of Melolonthidae Leach, 1819 and various tribes of Dynastinae MacLeay, 1819: Oryctini Mulsant, 1842, Phileurini Burmeister, 1842, Pentodontini Mulsant, 1842 and Cyclocephalini Laporte de Castelnau, 1840. The karyotypes of most species were fairly alike, composed of 20 chromosomes, including 18 meta- or sub-metacentric autosomes, one acrocentric or sub-metacentric X-chromosome, and one punctiform Y-chromosome, as that of their presumed common ancestor.
