Ó Î Dear Friends of Miege A Letter from the President

Do you remember the year? The average price of gas was about 27 cents a gallon (30 cents for ethyl). The space race began as the Soviet Union launched Sputnik. The Milwaukee Braves beat the Yankees in the World Series. The movie of the year was the war epic “The Bridge Over the River Kwai.” And the number one song was “Love Letters in the Sand” by Pat Boone.

You may have guessed that all of these events occurred in 1957. That same year a stained glass design was made for the chapel window in a new Catholic high school that Dr. Joe Passantino was soon to be built in Roeland Park, . As we know, know, manymany thingsthings havehave changedchanged andand evolved at a rapid rate in the ensuing 48 years -- especiallyespecially thethe priceprice ofof gas. However,However, as we are all aware, the aforementioned wwindowindow pprojectroject eevolvedvolved at a much slower rate – a defi nite understatement.

But, fi nally this past July, almost fi ve decades since its inception, the chapel window was completed. While the wait was much longlongerer ththanan ananyoneyone ddreamed, reamed, the results were nonetheless spectacular.spectacular. Designer MichaelMichael PillaPilla did a marvelousmarvelous job of depicting the verse from the “Fishers of Men” gospelgospel passagepassage (Luke(Luke 5:1-12)5:1-12) ofof Christ directing the three disciples to follow Him and “To“To putput outout intointo thethe deep!”deep!” (“Duc(“Duc in Altum”) In addition, Michael skillfully controlled the manymany differentdifferent levelslevels ofof lightlight intensityintensity thatthat impactimpact thethe large window at various times of the day.

We left the lights on in the chapel on the evening of our Back-to-School Night in September. As I was leaving school that night, I got my fi rst glance of “Duc in Altum” backlit in the darkness of night. Even though I had viewed every stage of the design process and seen the window at many different times of day from the inside, I was not prepared for what I saw that evening. When I reached the point on Reinhardt where I could view the entire window, I became totally captured by the magnifi cent beauty of this creation. The power of the gospel message depicted in the scene combined with the radiance of the colors was truly a sight to behold.

The seed that was planted in 1957 has fi nally reached fruition. That “new” Catholic high school in Roeland Park, Kansas is now about 50 years old and fi nally has its stained glass window. Our window is an amazing piece of religious art that will inspire the Miege community for decades to “put out into the deep” and follow Christ.

God bless.

Sincerely,

Dr. Joe Passantino, President
