Simply Red Bring the Curtain Down After 25 Years For Immediate Release Thursday July 1 2010 Simply Red Bring The Curtain Down After 25 Years “Welcome to the final year of twenty-five mind-blowing years,” says Mick Hucknall of Simply Red’s final shows. “What an adventure it has been!” Roundhouse Entertainment and Michael Coppel Presents is pleased to announce Simply Red’s legions of Australian fans will have the opportunity to say a final goodbye when the band’s Farewell World Tour reaches Australia this October. Simply Red will play their very last concerts here as a series of indoor shows and a day on the green winery events nationally. The tour’s very special guest will be Australia’s favourite Queen of Soul and disco diva Marcia Hines. Simply Red's classic pop and elegant ballads have provided an uplifting and emotional soundtrack to our turbulent times. The band is saying their farewells all over the world this year after what has been a remarkable 25 years. Their final show will be at London’s O2 Arena on December 19. “I could never have imagined my career would bring me so far,” Mick Hucknall said. “We want to share this closing anniversary with all the people who have enjoyed our sound throughout the years. Celebrate it and gently move on to the second half of a musical story. We all hope to see you at a show somewhere soon.” Since their first tour in 1985, Simply Red have played over 1,100 shows to over 11 million people, notched up over 55 million global sales, over 31 Top 40 UK singles, 3 BRIT Awards, 2 Ivor Novellos, 2 US No.1 Singles and a MOBO Special Achievement. Fronted by the charismatic Mick Hucknall, Simply Red grew out of Manchester and their first UK university/club tour in 1985 and quickly graduated to Europe and the USA in 1986. By 1987 they had conquered New Zealand and Australia and in 1989 they toured South America and Japan for the first time. By 1990 they had become a true global arena act and continued at that level until this day. Last year’s Greatest Hits tour notched up a further 1 million people across the world. Simply Red has dominated Australian charts from early albums Picture Book (1985) and Men And Women (1987) to the juggernaut’s The New Flame (1989) and Stars (1991). The Farewell Tour showcases all their amazing hits including Money’s Too Tight To Mention, Holding Back The Years, The Right Thing, Stars, Fairground, If You Don’t Know Me By Now, Something Got Me Started, A New Flame and Sunrise. MARCIA HINES, Australia’s favourite disco diva and celebrated singer, will be the tour’s special guest. With seven top 10 hits between 1975-1981 and hits across four decades, Marcia was a hugely popular inductee into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007. She is currently working on a new album “Marcia Sings Tapestry and the Songs of Carole King”, set for release later this year. We know her as Australia’s undisputed Queen of Soul, stage musical star, chart-topper, hit-maker, dance floor diva and most recently, the voice of reason on Australian Idol's judging panel, but live performance is what Marcia loves best and she is very much looking forward to the tour. ROSS WILSON will open the two NSW concerts in the Hunter Valley and Bowral. The July 16 release of his 15th studio album “I Come In Peace” is a testament to Ross’s longevity and his ability to keep producing music that is as relevant in 2010 as it was 1964 when it all began. Produced by Mark Moffatt, and recorded in Nashville & Melbourne in late 2009, “I Come In Peace” is Ross’ first new album in 8 years and features 11 new songs that have Wilson’s sublime song-writing touch all over them. JOE CAMILLERI’S BLACK SORROWS will open the concerts in VIC and SA with their infectious blend of pop/rock and roots music. Joe may be celebrating his 45th year in the music industry but he sounds better than ever! The Sorrows are currently recording a new album so expect some fine new tunes along with hits like ‘Harley & Rose’, ‘Chained To The Wheel’, and ‘Hold On To Me’. When Simply Red toured for a day on the green in early 2009, the sold-out concerts were amongst the fastest selling in the event’s history. Don’t miss the chance to say one final farewell to one of the most successful and acclaimed bands of the modern era. EVENT INFORMATION: ‘a day on the green’ is a fully licensed event. • A New Perspective on the Presley Legend
JULY, 1986 Vol 10 No 6 ISSN 0314 - 0598 A publication of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust A New Perspective on the Presley Legend ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT? by Alan Bleasdale Directed by Robin Lefevre Designed by Voytek Lighting designed by John Swaine Musical direction by Frank Esler-Smith Cast: Martin Shaw, David Franklin, Peta Toppano, Marcia Hines, John Derum, Lynda Stoner, Mervyn Drake, Ron Hackett and Jennifer West Her Majesty's Theatre heap of foil-wrapped Cadillac bon A nets (or is it crushed Cadillacs) form a stage upon a stage to set the mood for ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT?, Alan Bleasdale's play with songs about the life and death of Elvis Presley. On the lower stage, Gracelands, the garish pink Presley mansion with its outrageous chandeliers, is portrayed. Here, on the last day of his life, is "The King", now ageing, bloated, pill-popping and wear ing a purple jumpsuit and sunglasses. He watches his old movies and fumes because one of his trusted "aides" is ex posing his secrets to a newspaperman. In a series of flashbacks, Elvis relives his earlier experiences, the death of the twin brother whom he believes was his alter ego and stronger half, the death of his mother while he was a GI in Ger many, and the adulation poured on him as the lean, sexy king of rock. HiS manager, Colonel Tom Parker, is por trayed as his manipulator, holding a Presley dummy and gloating over the Martin Shaw as the ageing Presley in ARE profits. LONESOME TONIGHT? and (inset) as himself Author Bleasdale wrote the play to achieve a personal vindication of Presley, London critics were not always kind of $9.00 per ticket).

  • Banned on the Run Monday - Thursday the Music THEY Wouldn’T Let You Buy
WWhat’shat’s OOnn E-Book?E-Book? By Helen Marketti Banned On The Run Monday - Thursday The music THEY wouldn’t let you buy. 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Brian Southall has seen it all during his many impressive years in the music Friday industry. His latest book, Banned On The Run - the music THEY wouldn’t let you buy 5:00 - Midnight (Poppublishing, UK, 2014) is a collection of songs dating back to the 1930s that were banned Saturday from airplay and exposure to the public. Lyrics were considered offensive and inappropriate 12:00 p.m. - Midnight for the listening audience. It is an entertaining E-book as we share in the stories of why many songs were given the axe. Some examples from the book of well known songs being banned from the radio included Entertainment The Everly Brothers hit, “Wake Up Little Susie” (1957). It “suggested” that Suzie did more Every Saturday! than just sleep over. The Coasters hit “Charlie Brown” (1959) was banned for a short time on the BBC because of the word “spitball”. Next, the folk rock trio of Peter, Paul and Mary with 3AT*UNEs their classic “Puff The Magic Dragon” (1963) was on a list of records to be banned by then Vice President, Spiro Agnew. It was not clear if the song was referring to smoking dope or a Facemeyer Trio fun song for children. Agnew stated that the song was “blatant drug culture propaganda.” How about the Rolling Stones? “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” (1965) was taken off radio stations because there were complaints that the song was “sexually aggressive.” 3AT*UNEs Brian Southall’s music career began as a journalist on the Essex Chronicle back in the 1960s where he interviewed pop groups of that Lyle Heath generation.
