Mission and Core Values

MISSION STATEMENT Marian University is a Catholic applied liberal arts community that welcomes diverse spiritual traditions. Sponsored by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes, Marian University engages students in the education of the whole person. We embrace justice and compassion, and transform lives for professional service and leadership in the global community.

CORE VALUES

COMMUNITY Respecting our diversity as individuals, we encourage, challenge, and nurture one another, joining together to accomplish our shared mission and values.

LEARNING We engage in a collaborative life-long process of seeking truth, and appropriating knowledge and values to transform the individual, our communities, and the world.

SERVICE Through active service and ministry, we support one another and seek to meet the needs of the larger community.

SOCIAL JUSTICE We work to create individual and societal change which supports the value, dignity, and opportunity of every person.

SPIRITUAL TRADITIONS Valuing Marian's Catholic religious heritage, we respect each individual's freedom to explore a diversity of spiritual beliefs.

Marian University was founded in 1936 and sponsored by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes.

The seal includes our motto: Sicut Lillium Inter Spinas, deriving from the Latin phrase: As a Lily Among Thorns. The torch (symbolizing wisdom) emerges from the lily (symbolizing Mary, purity, and new life).

Sister Vera Naber designed the seal in 1937. She was our first Academic Dean and third president.

Campus Living

See more housing information on the Student Life pages at www.marianuniversity.edu/student-life

Am I required to live on campus? All first and second year students, unmarried and under the age of 21, are required to live on campus. An exception to this policy includes a student living at home with a parent/guardian located no more than 35 miles from campus. Any other exceptions to this policy require approval from the Director of Residence Life after completion of a Housing Release Request form.

Room and Board contracts are binding for the entire academic year, which is defined as the fall and following spring semester. Failure to comply with the residency requirement or furnishing false information on a Housing Release Request form will result in disciplinary action, fines, housing charges, and/or removal from the university.

When will I receive information regarding my housing assignment and roommate? Expect this information mid-July via your Marian email. The email will include your room assignment, roommate name, and email address. You are encouraged to contact your roommate to begin getting to know one another prior to your arrival on-campus. Single rooms are not available for freshmen. Visit our housing webpage to view photos and floor plans.

Why wasn’t I assigned to the residence hall that I listed as my first preference? We track housing applications by the date received and place students accordingly. We try to accommodate all requests, but your first choice is not guaranteed.

Why wasn’t I placed with the roommate that I listed on my contract? In order for students to be placed together, they must both list the other on their respective contracts. An additional reason may be that one contract was received after rooms and roommates have been assigned.

Am I allowed to switch rooms or roommates? Residence Life staff must approve room changes before any relocation takes place and it is the student’s responsibility to facilitate the move. All room changes for first semester may only take place after the 3rd week of classes. No moves will be accepted before the 3rd week.

What size are the beds, and am I able to loft my bed? All beds are size XL Twin. Most rooms have the option to loft, bunk, or have both as twin single beds.

May I move in early? Early move-in arrangements are made for specific populations such as fall student-athletes, summer bridge participants, and student leaders.

Who is in charge at each residence hall? Each facility has a full-time, professional Residence Hall Director who lives on-campus and is available to residents during office hours. They assist staff in community building, conflict resolution, and programming.

Each facility also has Resident Assistants who are full-time students assigned to specific areas. They are responsible for area programming, community leadership, referrals for academic or personal matters, assisting residents, emergency response and documentation, and administrative duties.

Do I need a Parking Permit? All vehicles parked on university grounds September-May during business hours (M-F 8:00am-4:30pm) must display a valid parking permit to avoid a parking violation. Parking is first-come, first served and permits do not guarantee a parking space.

It is the driver’s responsibility to know and follow Marian’s parking rules and the City of Fond du Lac’s Winter Parking Ordinance.

Refer to the Student Handbook or Marian One Stop (920) 923-8555. The Student Handbook can be found on the Student Life page on the Marian University website.

Purchasing a Parking Permit Cost is $75.00 for the full academic year, or $50 for the spring semester. Parking permits are typically purchased online at www.permitsales.net/MarianU. Check your Marian email during the summer, as that is when you will receive an email which includes this link and purchasing directions. In order to purchase a permit, you may be asked to provide:  Marian Student ID  Marian Email  Phone Number  Mailing Address  Vehicle Model  Vehicle Make  Vehicle Year  Vehicle Color  License Plate Number  License Plate State

If you wish to purchase a parking permit prior to the summer timeframe referenced above, please find the Parking Permit form in the back of this reference guide where additional instructions are provided.

Student Testimonials

James E.  Double Major: Sport & Recreation Management, and Business Administration “The greatest benefit of this externship for me was that it clarified my goals. I now know that I want to work in sports, absolutely. During the week of the externship, I learned about game- day production, ticket sales, public and community relations, marketing, and corporate partnerships. Additionally, I participated in set-up and tear-down for a basketball game, and staffed the game from tipoff to the final buzzer. This experience really opened my eyes to the nitty-gritty of sports management – it’s nothing like I expected, but it’s exactly what I want to do. To any incoming freshman: please take this opportunity. This externship and experience in a real-world business was without-a-doubt one of the best experiences of my life. – Externship Placement: Wisconsin Herd

Ashley S.  Major: Forensic Science “The greatest benefit I gained from the externship is in depth, knowledge and experience that is not learned in a classroom. I also found it very beneficial to hear professional advice for someone my age. Not only did this externship ensure that I was going into the right field, but it helped me focus on the field I am most interested in, which in my case is pathology and law enforcement. I highly recommend that future students partake in Marian’s freshmen externship because it gives you hands-on experience in a field that you very well could be working in one day. Additionally, the externship allows you to build connections with companies that you could intern or even work at in the future.” – Externship Placement: FDL Medical Examiner’s Office, Green Bay Police Department Forensic Science Unit, Promega, Options Lab, WI State Crime Lab-Madison

Braelynn J.  Major: Nursing “Overall this experience was very beneficial for me. Not only was I able to confirm that I am in the right field, but I was able to get an idea of what I would like to do with my future degree. After this experience, I can say that in my future I would like to be a surgical or OB nurse. I will use this experience going forward as motivation. I will forever remember this great opportunity throughout my life.” – Externship Placement: Waupun Hospital

FERPA Guide

Balancing Student Privacy and School Safety: A Guide to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act for Colleges and October 2007 | https://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/brochures/postsec.html

Postsecondary officials are regularly asked to balance the interests of safety and privacy for individual students. While the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) generally requires institutions to ask for written consent before disclosing a student's personally identifiable information, it also allows colleges and universities to take key steps to maintain campus safety. Understanding the law empowers school officials to act decisively and quickly when issues arise.

Health or Safety Emergency In an emergency, FERPA permits school officials to disclose without student consent education records, including personally identifiable information from those records, to protect the health or safety of students or other individuals. At such times, records and information may be released to appropriate parties such as law enforcement officials, public health officials, and trained medical personnel. See 34 CFR § 99.31(a)(10) and § 99.36. This exception to FERPA's general consent rule is limited to the period of the emergency and generally does not allow for a blanket release of personally identifiable information from a student's education records. In addition, the Department interprets FERPA to permit institutions to disclose information from education records to parents if a health or safety emergency involves their son or daughter.

Disciplinary Records While student disciplinary records are protected as education records under FERPA, there are certain circumstances in which disciplinary records may be disclosed without the student's consent. A postsecondary institution may disclose to an alleged victim of any crime of violence or non-forcible sex offense the final results of a disciplinary proceeding conducted by the institution against the alleged perpetrator of that crime, regardless of whether the institution concluded a violation was committed. An institution may disclose to anyone—not just the victim—the final results of a disciplinary proceeding, if it determines that the student is an alleged perpetrator of a crime of violence or non-forcible sex offense, and with respect to the allegation made against him or her, the student has committed a violation of the institution's rules or policies. See 34 CFR §§ 99.31(a)(13) and (14).

The Clery Act The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act requires postsecondary institutions to provide timely warnings of crimes that represent a threat to the safety of students or employees and to make public their campus security policies. It also requires that crime data be collected, reported, and disseminated to the campus community and to the Department annually. The Clery Act is intended to provide students and their families with accurate, complete, and timely information about safety on campuses so that they can make informed decisions. Such disclosures are permitted under FERPA. The following Web site provides more information about these and other provisions about campus safety: http://www.ed.gov/admins/lead/safety/campus. html.

Law Enforcement Unit Records Many colleges and universities have their own law enforcement units to monitor safety and security in and around campus. Institutions that do not have specific law enforcement units may designate a particular office or school official to be responsible for referring potential or alleged violations of law to local police authorities. Investigative reports and other records created and maintained by these law enforcement units are not considered education records subject to FERPA. Accordingly, institutions may disclose information from law enforcement unit records to anyone, including outside law enforcement authorities, without student consent. See 34 CFR § 99.8.

While an institution has flexibility in deciding how to carry out safety functions, it must also indicate in its policy or in information provided to students which office or school official serves as the college or university's "law enforcement unit." (The institution's notification to students of their rights under FERPA can include this designation. As an example, the Department has posted a model notification on its Web site at: http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid /fpco/ferpa/ps-officials.html.)

51

Law enforcement unit officials who are employed by the college or university should be designated in the institution's FERPA notification as "school officials" with a "legitimate educational interest." As such, they may be given access to personally identifiable information from students' education records. The institution's law enforcement unit officials must protect the privacy of education records it receives and may disclose them only in compliance with FERPA. For that reason, it is advisable that law enforcement unit records be maintained separately from education records.

Disclosure to Parents When a student turns 18 years old or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, all rights afforded to parents under FERPA transfer to the student. However, FERPA also provides ways in which schools may share information with parents without the student's consent. For example:  Schools may disclose education records to parents if the student is a dependent for income tax purposes.  Schools may disclose education records to parents if a health or safety emergency involves their son or daughter.  Schools may inform parents if the student who is under age 21 has violated any law or its policy concerning the use or possession of alcohol or a controlled substance.  A school official may generally share with a parent information that is based on that official's personal knowledge or observation of the student.

FERPA and Student Health Information Postsecondary institutions that provide health or medical services to students may share student medical treatment records with parents under the circumstances described above. While these records may otherwise be governed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), the HIPAA Privacy Rule excludes student medical treatment records and other records protected by FERPA. The Department plans to issue further guidance on the interplay between FERPA and HIPAA.

FERPA and Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) FERPA permits institutions to comply with information requests from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau (ICE) in order to comply with the requirements of SEVIS. Officials who have specific questions about this and other matters involving international students should contact the U.S. Department of Education's Family Policy Compliance Office.

Transfer of Education Records Finally, FERPA permits school officials to disclose any and all education records, including disciplinary records, to another institution at which the student seeks or intends to enroll. While student consent is not required for transferring education records, the institution's annual FERPA notification should indicate that such disclosures are made. In the absence of information about disclosures in the annual FERPA notification, school officials must make a reasonable attempt to notify the student about the disclosure, unless the student initiates the disclosure. Additionally, upon request, the institution must provide a copy of the information disclosed and an opportunity for a hearing. See 34 CFR § 99.31(a)(2) and § 99.34(a).

Contact Information For further information about FERPA, please contact the Family Policy Compliance Office or visit its Web site. Family Policy Compliance Office U.S. Department of Education 400 Maryland Ave. S.W. Washington, DC 20202-5920 202-260-3887

I agree that when I register for any class at Marian University or receive any service from Marian University, I accept full responsibility to pay all tuition, fees and other associated costs assessed as a result of my registration and/or receipt of educational services, by the published or assigned due date. I further agree that my registration and acceptance of these terms constitutes a promissory note agreement (i.e., a financial obligation in the form of an educational loan as defined by the U.S. Bankruptcy Code at 11 U.S.C. §523(a)(8)) between myself and Marian University.

I agree that this Student Financial Responsibility Agreement will remain in full effect for any and all periods of my enrollment; and for any and all programs in which I enroll and am a student at Marian University regardless of whether or not those periods of enrollment or programs run concurrently.

Marian University will provide me with access to Sabrenet via MyMarian where I will be able to register for classes, access my grades and schedule, view billing information, amounts owed and due dates for such amounts. Marian University will also provide me with access to MyFinancialAid where I can view, accept or decline any financial aid I may be entitled to receive.

By registering for classes at Marian University:  I promise to pay all assessed tuition and fees as a result of this registration, unless I cancel prior to the first day of the class.  If I do not cancel my class(es) prior to the first day I agree that I will be held responsible for paying all or some portion of tuition and fees based on my date of cancellation.  I also agree to pay any additional charges I incur including but not limited to charges for room, board, parking, citations, class materials, and other departmental or college charges.  I agree to reimburse the University the fees of any collection agency, which may be based on a percentage of the debt (maximum 50%), and all costs and expenses.  I agree that if my account goes to collections, I am subject to credit bureau reporting.

DELINQUENT ACCOUNT/COLLECTION Financial Hold: I agree that Marian University will place a Financial Hold on my student account if I fail to pay by the designated date. I agree that this financial hold will prevent me from registering for future classes, requesting transcripts, or receiving my diploma.

Late Payment Charge: I agree that Marian University will assess the following charges and penalties to my student account if I fail to pay all charges assessed to my student account in full by the due date:  1% monthly service charge on any past due balance.  Additional $10.00/month late fee for non-payment.

Non-Sufficient Funds Returned Payment: I agree to repay the original amount of the payment plus a $35.00 NSF fee if a payment made to my student account is returned by the bank for any reason.

Collection Costs: I agree that Marian University may refer my past due student account at the University for collection and authorize legal action against me for the collection of this debt. I agree to pay all costs of collection incurred by Marian University including by not limited to collection agency fees, credit bureau fees, legal filing fees, service of process fees, publication fees, witness fees, reasonable attorney fees and recording fees. I also agree that Marian University may certify my past due balance to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and make a claim for the total due against refunds, overpayments, lottery payments, or other assets available to the Department in its collection efforts. 55

Bankruptcy: I agree that funds advanced under this Financial Responsibility Agreement are for educational benefit, and constitute a student loan which is not generally dischargeable under U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Bankruptcy of a financial sponsor in no way changes the underlying financial obligation of the student to pay the account and/or student loans.

COMMUNICATION Contact and Release of Information: I agree that Marian University uses my assigned University email address as an official method of communication with me, and therefore agree that I am responsible for reading the emails I receive from Marian University on a timely basis. I agree to inform the University of any change in my name, address, telephone number, or social security number in a timely manner. I acknowledge that I am being notified of and give my consent, as may be required by law, to allow Marian University at its option to report credit information pertaining to myself to credit bureaus and other non-campus third parties and also release my social security number to these non-campus third parties in the conduct of the University’s credit granting and collection activities. I authorize Marian University and its agents and contractors to contact me at my current and any future cellular phone number(s), email address(es) or wireless device(s) regarding my delinquent student account(s)/loan(s), any other debt I owe to Marian University, or to receive general information from Marian University. I authorize Marian University and its agents and contractors to use automated telephone equipment, artificial or pre-recorded voice or text messages, and personal calls and emails, in their efforts to contact me.

FINANCIAL AID I agree that aid described as “estimated” on my Financial Aid Award does not represent actual or guaranteed payment, but is an estimate of the aid I may receive if I meet all requirements stipulated by that aid program.

I agree that my Financial Aid Award is contingent upon my continued enrollment and attendance in each class upon which my financial aid eligibility was calculated. If I drop any class before completion, I understand that my financial aid eligibility may decrease and some or all of the financial aid awarded to me may be revoked.

If some or all of my financial aid is revoked because I dropped or failed to attend class, I agree to repay all revoked aid that was disbursed to my account and resulted in a credit balance that was refunded to me. I agree to allow financial aid I receive to pay any and all charges assessed to my account at Marian University such as tuition, fees, campus housing and meal plans, student health insurance, parking permits, service fees, fines, bookstore charges, or any other amount, in accordance with the terms of the aid.

Federal Aid: I agree that any federal Title IV financial aid that I receive, except for Federal Work Study wages, will first be applied to any outstanding balance on my account for tuition, fees, room and board. Title IV financial aid includes aid from the Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Direct Loan, PLUS Loan, and TEACH Grant programs.

Prizes, Awards, Scholarships, Grants: I agree that all prizes, awards, scholarships and grants awarded to me by Marian University will be credited to my student account and applied toward any outstanding balance. I further understand that my receipt of a prize, award, scholarship or grant is considered a financial resource according to federal Title IV financial aid regulations, and may therefore reduce my eligibility for other federal and/or state financial aid (i.e., loans, grants, Federal Work Study) which, if already disbursed to my student account, must be reversed and returned to the aid source.

METHOD OF BILLING I agree that Marian University uses both paper and electronic billing. I agree that I am responsible for viewing and paying my student account by the scheduled due date. I further agree that failure to review my bill does not constitute a valid reason for not paying my bill on time. I agree that current charge and credit detail is available to me 24/7 via my MyMarian Sabrenet account.

BILLING ERRORS I agree that administrative, clerical or technical billing errors do not absolve me of my financial responsibility to pay the correct amount of tuition, fees and other associated financial obligations assessed as a result of my registration at Marian University.

56

PRIVACY RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES I agree that Marian University is bound by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) which prohibits the release of any information from my education record without my written permission. I further agree that I may revoke my permission at any time.

IRS FORM 1098-T I agree to provide my Social Security number (SSN) or taxpayer identification number (TIN) to Marian University upon request as required by Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations for Form 1098-T reporting purposes I agree to receive my annual IRS Form 1098-T (tuition statement) in the form of a paper copy which will be mailed to the address I have on file with Marian University.

STUDENT AGE I understand and agree that if I am younger than the applicable age of majority (18 years old) when I execute this agreement that the educational services provided by Marian University are a necessity, and I am contractually obligated pursuant to the “doctrine of necessaries.” I further agree that my continued acceptance of educational services provided by Marian University in exchange for payment after I reach the age of majority constitutes ratification of the original agreement.

ENTIRE AGREEMENT This agreement supersedes all prior understandings, representations, negotiations and correspondence between the student and Marian University, constitutes the entire agreement between the parties with respect to the matters described, and shall not be modified or affected by any course of dealing or course of performance. This agreement may be modified by Marian University if the modification is signed by me. Any modification is specifically limited to those policies and/or terms addressed in the modification.

READ THIS ENTIRE AGREEMENT CAREFULLY. IT CONSTITUTES A PROMISSORY NOTE CREATING FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS THAT CANNOT BE DISCHARGED IN BANKRUPTCY. IT ALSO GRANTS TO MARIAN UNIVERSITY THE RIGHT TO WITHHOLD STUDENT AID IF YOU FAIL TO MEET YOUR OBLIGATIONS.
