Seeking Your Club Charity Suggestions It’s time for AACC to consider the local charities which we will support for the next few years. As you are aware, partial proceeds from our two car shows and other activities benefit the selected charities. As members of AACC, your club Officers and Board of Directors are asking for your proposals of the charities we should support starting in 2017. We ask you to research any non‐profit you suggest and provide information including: how their funds are used, whom thy support, what percentage actually goes to the cause, etc. It is also helpful to have a contact name, email and address. We prefer to target local non‐profits who support our region to keep the funds as close to home as possible. To be considered by the Board, please provide Laura Hegyi with your suggestions prior to the February 8th club meeting. Please include any charity pamphlets or brochures if available. Our current beneficiaries are: PA Wounded Warriors, Hope For Veterans, Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley and Northeast PA, St. Luke’s Cancer Compassion Fund, and Cancer Support Community of the Greater LV. The Board will review all suggestions received, then prepare a ballot which will be voted on by all active members present at our March 22, 2017 meeting. Allentown Area Corvette Club

AACCares Mike Cutro (‘14) We are looking for a worthy project in the Lehigh Valley where our members can participate for a day in the improve‐ ment of the daily lives of others less fortunate than us. Potential ideas are a park clean up, playground construction, graffiti removal, Habitat for Humanity project, nursing home help, etc. The goal will be to get 50+ AACC members for a day to participate in a team project that benefits the community and builds camaraderie that reaches beyond our Corvettes. As a follow up to "AACCares" discussed during the recent meeting night, I am reaching out to the entire club to find a Chairperson to run this event. However, if you cannot run this event but have a connection to an organization or public figure that is looking for non‐monetary Cares! support, please contact me ([email protected] or 201.572.8023).

My Marketplace Marty Hegyi may have retired from his sales position at Bosch‐Rexroth in December, but sales in apparently his blood. He presented January’s My Marketplace — Sheen Genie (www.SheenGenie.com). Heralded as “The Best Metal Polish & Sealer That Actually Works,” this product is actually a two‐part system. The polish applies easily with a foam applicator and fills in the nooks and crannies of metal and chrome. Just wipe on and wipe off in sec‐ onds. A single application of the cleaner + polish followed by the sealer + repellent will keep your metal looking like new metal for nearly 6 months! Not just meant for bumpers, wheels, and trim, Sheen Genie has applications around the house, too! Their website features application videos and showcases other products. If you don’t need the products now, look for it at Carlisle this summer (potentially at a lower cost that online)! If you have a Corvette product or service to share with AACC, contact Marty Hegyi and coor‐ dinate your presentation. 2018 Corvette ZR1, Where Are You? by Dave Cruikshank, CorvetteOnline.com Fri., Jan. 06 | The North American International Auto Show, [sic] is on now folks. The show runs until the 22nd and con‐ tinues to be arguably the biggest OEM automotive hootenanny on the planet. Most major automakers arrive in Detroit in full force to show off their new sheetmetal [sic] and toot their own horns, but surprisingly, Bentley, Jaguar Land Rover, Maserati, Mini, , Rolls‐Royce and Tesla are skipping the show this year. Huh? For ‘Vette fans we could care less if those snooty Europeans and Elon Musk shun the show. What we care about it [sic] is whether or not the 2018 C7 ZR1 will break cover. According to GMAuthority, the answer is a big, stinkin’ no. That isn’t etched in stone though. When Ford introduced the latest GT, it took the automotive world by surprise with no advanced notice so maybe GM is aping their cross‐town rivals from Dearborn and playing dumb. The new ZR1 is a huge event for Corvette. It will be the first ZR1 since 2013 and most likely will be the recipient of a DOHC V8 that recently ricocheted around the web. Chevrolet usually likes to alert auto scribes to such an event but the only thing we’ve heard is the sound of crickets. There have been ZR1 murmurs, sightings and leaks galore in the press though. Speculation has run wild with declara‐ tions of turbocharged, supercharged or naturally aspirated motors and whether or not the ZR1 is the swan song of the C7 or a stablemate to a new mid‐engine, range topping Super‐Vette. With the leak of the DOHC motor, we think that there is no better engine bay to introduce it than the C7. A modern version of the old C4 ZR1 would be very cool. It would also pay homage to Dave McLellan and his tireless dedication to the Corvette. From what we can deduce, the ZR1 will have increased air flow management with air vent nostrils on either side of the main grille opening. The Z06 has a reputation for running hot so increased airflow should cure that. GM trademarked E‐Ray recently and spy shots clearly show a bundle of wires visible in the rear hatch area. We think adding instant torque to a gas motor would be a marriage made in heaven but after “The Great Tailight [sic] Fiasco” Image: AllCarNews of 2014, we think this might trigger a revolt among Corvette purists. We’ll have to wait and see, but electrification of the automobile is coming folks[,] and the Corvette will not be excluded. ...In the meantime, mark your calendar and keep your ear to the ground this coming Monday. If they lift the curtain and show the car we’ll be bummed that GM played dead but will also jump for joy that we have a new ZR1. Stay tuned to Corvette Online for all the latest and greatest coverage of the secret, super C7. Page 11 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 24, Iss. 02 | February 2017

Where the Corvettes Are Excerpt from Dave Cruikshank, CorvetteOnline.com Fri., Jan. 06 | CorvetteOnline posted graphics showing the Top 10 U.S. States and Countries in terms of Corvette popu‐ lation. Within the U.S., the top states are (1) Texas, (2) Florida, (3) California, (4) New York, (5) Illinois, (6) Pennsylvania, (7) Ohio, (8) Michigan, (9) North Carolina, and (10) Tennessee. Looking at countries, no surprise that U.S. leads the pack, but here are the rest: (2) Brazil, (3) Mexico, (4) , (5) Canada, (6) France, (7) Puerto Rico, (8) United Arab Emirates, (9) Bermuda, and (10) Iraq. The coolness of Corvette needs no translation!

Corvette Dominated 2016 Sales by Jenna Schiebe, CorvetteOnline.com Fri., Jan. 06 | 2016 was a great year for the car industry, giving us Corvette fans plenty to look forward to in 2017. As we looked back on just how great the year was, we thought the Corvette’s final sales numbers would be worth a men‐ tion – because, as usual, it has [sic] surpassed its competitors.

While it seems the majority of the buyers in the prefer U.S. Domestic Market (USDM) sports cars, the Corvette still isn’t known to make it into the top three – usually coming in as fourth “best” – at least in terms of annual sales. However, this is to be expected as the Corvette is higher priced and thus geared toward lower sales overall.

There’s no debating that the Corvette has substantially more power than other sports cars offered here in the US (such as the Camaro or Mustang), but again, that comes with a price. So, taking these price differences into consideration, TorqueNews took it upon themselves to compare our favorite to others that are more in its class. The results are astonishing.

As you probably expected, the Corvette did very well. Actually, it completely dominated all other premium sports coupe sales – doubling that of its second‐place competitor, the RC. Throughout the year, dealers across the United States pushed out a whopping 29,995 Chevrolet Corvettes. The Lexus RC had 11,165 units sold, and in third‐ place was the ‘Vettes everlasting rival, the Porsche 911 with a mere 8,901 units sold. Yes, you read that correctly– the Corvette more than tripled the 911’s sales.

We could say that we’re surprised, but the seventh generation Corvette has been a perennial best seller for GM. Let’s hope that sales continue strong through 2017, as we are sure they will with the arrival of the ZR1. Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 12 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 24, Iss. 02 | February 2017

Mike Simcoe: GM Design by Jenna Schiebe, CorvetteOnline.com Thu., Jan. 12 | Who is Mike Simcoe? Meet the new “Bill Mitchell” of GM Design.

GM Design is legendary. Known as a creative powerhouse for decades, the grandaddy of automotive styling has recently undergone some changes that effect [sic] not only GM passenger cars, but our hallowed Corvette as well.

When Ed Welburn, vice‐president GM Global Design resigned on May 1, 2016, he handed the reigns [sic] of GM Design to Australian Michael Simcoe and ushered in a new era at GM’s lauded design arm.

According to Wheels Australia, “As only the seventh boss of what the legendary established as the Art and Colour section in 1927, the 58‐year‐old Simcoe is also the first non‐American to be ap‐ pointed to the job. He will oversee 2500 people and 10 studios globally, including the Australian outpost in Port Mel‐ bourne where he learned his craft. He will mold the shaping of the ex‐ teriors and interiors of 10 million vehicles sold annually.”

You’ve seen his work before. Simcoe began his career with GM when he joined as a designer in 1983. In 1995, Simcoe was a leader with GM’s alliance partners including Daewoo, , and . The Australian‐born designer then returned his focus to Holden and over‐ saw the Holden VT Commodore and WH Statesman and Caprice.

In 2009, he was tasked with leading design for North America, and spearheaded the GMC Terrain and LaCrosse. Like Welburn, he too was involved with the well‐received fifth‐gen Chevy Camaro.

Simcoe is well aware that with the intro of the C8, he will be making history with the first mid‐engine Corvette as well as putting his mark on the latest iteration of one of the most iconic sports cars of all time.

When it comes to Corvette, Simcoe has this to say, “You’re dealing with an icon that’s been successful, consistently successful, and you don’t want to be the one who blew that.” He continued but was very Images: CorvetteOnline careful not to give any details on the next generation Corvette, which is expected to switch from a front engine to mid‐engine layout. “Being part of a Corvette design is very exciting for everyone involved and there certainly will be a next generation Corvette at some point.” Simcoe said.

We wish Simcoe the best and look forward to the fruits of GM Design under his reign. Page 13 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 24, Iss. 02 | February 2017

The Barrett‐Jackson Scottsdale auction gave bidders the chance to select from a wide range of American muscle, Euro‐ pean classics, exotic sports cars and one‐of‐a‐kind customs. The top cars sold in Scottsdale include:

“Barrett‐Jackson Scottsdale has become the most anticipated event of the year as it is the barometer for the hobby,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett‐Jackson. “Barrett‐Jackson Collector Car Week, as proclaimed by the city of Scotts‐ dale, is an immersive entertainment experience that offers something every person can enjoy. The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auction was the only place to find the greatest selection of cars, the most passionate enthusiasts, the largest number of charity cars and the biggest displays by top automakers, all inside more than a million square feet of covered space.”

The Charlie Thomas Collection, which featured 146 vehicles, sold for an impressive combined total of just over $1.7 million, with the top three vehicles including a 1970 Superbird (Lot #1284), a 1957 Ford Thunderbird “F” Con‐ vertible (Lot #1282) and a 1955 Mercedes‐Benz 190SL Roadster (Lot #1283).

Eight charity vehicles crossed the Scottsdale block this year, including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and four‐ time Grammy winner Steven Tyler’s 2012 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder (Lot #3003). Tyler roared onto the stage to help sell his rare Hennessey, which sold for $800,000, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Janie’s Fund.

“Steven Tyler entered the auction arena in true rock and roll style,” said Jackson. “With a grand entrance featuring lights, music and Steven standing in the passenger seat, the crowd was on their feet like we were at one of his con‐ certs. There’s really no place in the world, like Barrett‐Jackson, that brings together superstars and super cars.”

The complete docket of charity vehicles included:

 2016 GMC Sierra Custom Pickup (Lot #3000) to benefit the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation/ Building for America’s Bravest – $100,000  1970 Z/28 (Lot #3001) to benefit Childhelp – $130,000  2017 Chevrolet Camaro COPO (Lot #3002) to benefit the United Way – $175,000  Steven Tyler’s 2012 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder (Lot #3003) to benefit Janie’s Fund – $800,000

 2017 Ford Raptor Pickup (Lot #3004) to benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation – $157,000 with an additional $50,000 donation  1930 L29 4‐Door4 Brougham (Lot #3005) to benefit Loma Linda Univ. Children’s Hospital – $300,000 To date, Barrett‐Jackson has raised over $93 million for local and national charities.

This year’s excitement at Barrett‐Jackson continued beyond the auction block and included a variety of automotive and lifestyle activities, including the Coca‐Cola Garage and Patio. Other activities included Ford and Chevrolet Ride ’N Drives, Thrill Rides and complimentary “Behind the Hobby” Collector Car Symposiums.

The fun continued with Arena Polo matches, an Arabian Horse Exhibition, Indian Motorcycle Demo Rides, live bands, hundreds of exhibitor and sponsor displays, a DIY Pavilion and the Shell Pennzoil Pioneering Performance Stage.

The first to broadcast a live collector car auction in 1997, Barrett‐Jackson has pioneered how enthusiasts access its auc‐ tions around the world. Today, 20 years later, Barrett‐Jackson is the leading collector car auction on the air. More than 36 hours of live coverage of this year’s Scottsdale Auction was shown on Velocity and Discovery simultaneously in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Discovery en Español. Barrett‐Jackson is also the first to pioneer a second screen experience this year with the new Shell Pennzoil Pioneering Performance Stage.

Corvette Assembly Will Shutter by Michael Accardi, GMInsideNews.com Mon., Jan. 23 | It’s believed the plant closure will coincide with the completion of model year 2017 sometime in June; it’s expected the $290 million upgrades and modifications to assembly operations, adding “new technologies and proc‐ esses” will take three months to complete. The word comes from Corvette Blogger which claims an announcement from the plant is forthcoming. Upgrades to the assembly line are in addition to the new $439 million paint shop which should be completed this spring, before officially coming online in the fall. The plant should operate at full capacity through the first six months of 2016 [sic] to ensure a healthy supply of C7 Cor‐ vettes will be available during the plant closure. Naturally, 2018 model year production will begin once work begins again in Bowling Green. The C7 Corvette will continue its life at Bowling Green, but it’s believed it could be joined by the 2018 Corvette ZR1, and likely the mythical mid‐engine Corvette. Rumors have persisted that Team Corvette has found a way to re‐purpose the C7 platform for mid‐engine duty. Bowling Green’s assembly line hasn’t been upgraded since before the start of C5 production in 1997. Like the mid‐ engine Corvette will be, the C5 was a revolution for the brand, moving to a new hydroformed box frame, relocating the to the back, and of course, the rebirth of the giant slaying Z06. NCM News & Events Celebrating 30 Years of Callaway Corvettes Jan. 12 | In 1987 Corvettes got a little faster thanks to engineers at Callaway Cars. What started in the garage of Reeves Callaway’s Old Lyme, Connecticut home has grown into a company with three locations (Connecticut, California and Germany) and four core business units: Callaway Engineer‐ ing, Callaway Cars, Callaway Carbon and Callaway Competition. When the company began, Reeves’ mission was not to enhance Corvette performance, it was to put food on the table for a young family in the only way he knew how. To build something beau‐ tiful and powerful that would appeal to the owners of fine automotive machinery. Reeves had a passion for making engines powerful, and in 1986 his company formally became allied with Chevrolet Corvette.

Reeves’ engineering achievements in the Corvette performance arena began with the factory RPO B2K Twin Turbo Corvettes (1987‐1991), and continued with the develop‐ ment of the world‐recording holding 254 mph “Sledgehammer,” C4 Aerobody package, LT‐1 and LT‐5 SuperNatural Corvettes, C12 Callaway Supercars, C5/C6 power group packages, C6 Supercharged Corvettes / C16 Supercars, and C7 Stingray/GS and Z06 models, and branching Callaway into other GM V8 powered performance cars, trucks, and SUVs.

In celebration of Callaway’s 40th anniversary, and their 30th anniversary of their relationship with Corvette, the Na‐ tional Corvette Museum’s Exhibit Hall will be displaying 15 examples of this high‐performance Corvette.

The exhibit officially opens Friday, January 13 and ends May 5, 2017. Got a Greenwood? Jan. 12 | This summer the National Corvette Museum will play host to a special Greenwood Corvette exhibit featuring cars by the American automotive performance tuning and racing company specializing in Corvette sportscars and race cars. Founded by automotive enthusiasts and professional race car drivers, American brothers Burt and John Greenwood, the exhibit will highlight 14 examples of their work.

The exhibit is May 12 ‐ September 18, 2017. The World's Largest Moving Automotive Event Jan. 12 | Often referred to as the world’s largest moving automotive event, the National Corvette Caravan is a cele‐ bration of America’s Sports Car, culminating in Bowling Green, Kentucky for the anniversary celebration of the National Corvette Museum. Hosted only once every five years, the next event is slated for Labor Day Weekend 2019 (August 28‐ 31) and will mark the Museum’s 25th Anniversary. Leading the charge will be Jeffrey Duda of Hainesport, NJ, a Lifetime (Continued on page 18) Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 18 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 24, Iss. 02 | February 2017

Regional caravans will form and join other caravans as they travel across the United States to meet in Bowling Green, Kentucky for four days of festivities at the National Corvette Museum. NCM MSP Featured on 'The Grand Tour' Jan. 26 | In December the NCM Motorsports Park played host to a film crew from Amazon Prime. Their mission? Illustrate why a GM driver has the best job in the world for the series ‘The Grand Tour.’

Thanks to our relationship with Michelin, the track was used to film a brand placement vignette, which is available as extra content on the show. Of course, Jim Mero, Vehicle Dynam‐ ics Engineer – Corvette Ride and Handing at for more than 30 years, was an appropriate pick for the gig.

You can check out the clip of Jim tearing up the track on the Motorsports Park website (http:// motorsportspark.org/amazon‐primes‐grand‐tour‐films‐msp/) and tune in to new episodes every Friday night.
