Fishing News News pages from history: Arizona Sentinel March 30, 1878 Salmon for the Colorado “Stocking the Colorado River with fish is a matter that is now receiving some attention. At present there is but one variety of the “ Colorado salmon,” though it appears to have no pecularities in common with the noble fish. It grows to great size, 30 pounds not being an uncommon weight. Its fleash is tolerably free from small bones and, during the winter months, reasonably firm. The other varieties are small, bony and of muddy flavor. The temperature of the water is an important consideration in selecting the proper varieites of fish for stocking the Colorado. To determine this fact, the railroad company are cuasing daily record to be made of the temperature of the river, and these observations will be continued throughout the summer.” (Game and Fish Note: the Colorado salmon mentioned are now called the Colorado pikeminnow, which is the largest minnow in the world and can grow up to 100 pounds. Pikeminnows are endangered big river fish) Arizona Sentinel April 6, 1878 ( Yuma) “Catfish and eels ought to thrive in the Colorado River. They abound in the Mississippi, whose waters are quite warm, and must as muddy, as those of our stream – the U.S. Fish Commissionerso ought to experiment a little out this way. We believe they will.” Bill's Crappie Report Sorry it’s been a while since my last report but honestly there hasn’t been much to talk about. The big storms a few weeks ago brought in a ton of new water which makes it tough to find and catch Crappie. With all the rain we've had our Crappie Lakes in AZ have come way up. There's more rain to come and a lot of snow in the high country to melt this spring. All the new water brings well needed nutrients and new cover for the fish to hide and spawn in. This should also spark off an incredible shad spawn this summer. Also, it looks like for now anyway, San Carlos has been saved from being emptied and massive fish kills. But it also brings in tons of debris which makes fishing and navigation very tough.

Golden alga blooms came on suddenly at Cortez and Water Ranch Lakes resulting in the loss of over 80 fish at each lake. Both lakes have since been treated with algaecides to kill off the troublesome, microscopic golden alga and stop its toxins from affecting any more fish. Recent tests indicate golden alga is under control at Cortez, but is not fully under control at Water Ranch. Some fish loses have also been reported from Desert Breeze, Chaparral and Surprise Lakes in recent weeks. Game and Fish biologists, parks staff and lake management consultants have all collaborated to respond to these issues promptly and perform all necessary water quality testing and lake management treatments. Lake conditions have returned to normal at Desert Breeze and are improving at Chaparral and Sur prise. Read below to learn how all these environmental stresses will affect catfish stockings. April 14-19 Catfish Stocking Status: Due to golden alga, Cortez Lake was not stocked with catfish on April 2, however it has been successfully treated and is cleared for stocking. Water Ranch Lake has been treated, but has not been cleared for stocking.

Reports have been coming into Game and Fish offices of some remarkable trout caught. Leon Jones caught a 6-pound rainbow trout from Alvord Lake in Phoenix and applied for Big Fish-of-the-Year honors already. Jones’ 23.5 inch whopper was caught on Power Bait four days after the stockings. Joe Anksel caught a 4.4 pounder at Red Mountain Lake in Mesa, also on Power Bait. Talk around Red Mountain is that someone caught a 7 pounder. Future trout stockings through the winter season will include some 2-5 pounders, but will mostly have 11-12 inchers; still a nice fish anywhere in Arizona. 2010 Urban Fishing Big Fish Record Winners Topping the list of 2010 Urban Program Big Fish-of-the-Year winners was an 8.7 pound channel catfish caught by Garrett Laubinger from Kiwanis Lake in Tempe.

Jeff Williams wrote that he used Super Dupers and his friend fly-fished to catch and release 36 trout at Deadhorse State Park near Cottonwood. He added, "I walk on crutches and was so shocked at how crutch-friendly the lagoons were for me! Been fishing all my life, but as I grow older, it has been harder to get around, and these lagoons are a boon for folks in my position. VERY NEAT! I will even take my 80-year-old mother with her Pioneer License there next month. Great fun that I have not enjoyed in such a long time." For Jeff and others who are physically challenged, here are some other places to try that are easily accessed. First, pick an Urban Fishing Program Lake and go. The urban lakes are all pretty accessible. You might try Surprise Lake, Steele Indian School Park Pond, Cortez, Red Mountain, Chaparral, or Riverview.
