A. L. (Buck) Dawson has breathed new life into the Morehead State University program during his four-year tenure as head coach. Once the perennial doormat of the Ohio Va lley Conference, the Eagles have grown in competition and facilities to become one of the top teams in the ave. The 39-year-old native of Bradshaw, W. Va., led MSU to a sixth place finish in indoor track last season and was named the OVC's " Coach of the Year" in 1975 following a second place finish in the outdoor championships. He earned "Coach of the Year" honors for five consecutive years in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while coaching at West Virginia State College in 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1973. A former baseball and footba ll standout at MSU, Dawson returned as head t rack and cross country coach in 197 4. He received his bachelor's degree from MSU in 1960 and earned a master's degree from Georgetown College in 1965 . He attended Ceredo-Kenova (W. Va.) and Coal Grove (Ohio) High Schools before coming to MSU. Dawson previously served as football and track coach at Lexington Lafayette and Millersburg Military Institute, winning state track titles at Lafayette in 1974 and 1975 and at MM I in 1966. Dawson is married to the former Roberta Jones of Morehead. They have three children. THE EAGLES BY EVENT Morehead State University begins its first season of indoor track competition in Richardson Arena this winter, and Coach A. L. Dawson views the facility as a boost for the program. "The new facility will allow our athletes to train indoors in the winter and to prepare themselves for national competition on a wooden, indoor track," he explained. MSU returns 14 members of last year's team, which finished sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships. But Dawson is optimistic that 1977 wi II be better. "With our own indoor facility, we should be in better physical condition," said Dawson. "And we have some individuals capable o'f qualifying for the nationals this spring." An in-depth look at the Eagles includes: 60-YARD DASH - One of the strongest areas on the team. Two former AII-OVC picks head the list of potential winners. The OVC's "Track Man of the Year" in 1975, Bobby Jones, returns and all-confer ence pick Oscar Jones also is back. Bobby has posted a 6.1 mark to set an MSU record, and Oscar is capable of tying the mark. Newcomer Jeff Washington also could challenge the school record. 60-YARD HURDLES - Oscar Jones holds the school record at 7 .2 seconds and could press for conference honors. Freshmen Mike Renfroe, West Virginia's Class AAA state champion, and Jude Kawa also will add depth in the hurdles. Jones will ,attempt to regain his 197 4 form and discard the injuries he suffered last year.

Harry Wooddell 440-YAR D DASH - Three returnees make this event another strong point. Junior Jerry Wyche returns after posting a 48.2 mark in 1975 to set the MSU record. Wyche recorded one of the top times in the U.S.A. before being sidelined by an injury. Willie Jones and Steve Wyche are expected to compete for top honors and newcomers Jeff Washington, Eddie Burton and Greg Threat also give MSU depth. 880-YARD RUN - Dawson smiles when he discusses the potential of the half-milers. Record holder Kelvin Kelley returns to try to better his 1:51 .5 mark and welcomes a trio of capable recruits to strengthen the position. Junior Rick Ferguson, who clocked a 1 :50.3 mark in finishing second in the national junior college meet last year, is expected to push Kelley. Freshmen Halstine Lee and Mike Thomas also are capable of breaking into the lineup. Returnee Mark Baughey showed promise in the cross country season and could help. Ml LE RUN - Biggest question mark on the team. Three freshmen and a sophomore make up MSU's distance corps and none are geared to the shortest race. David Dean and David Bowman were the class of West Virginia high school runners last year and Marty Withrow was one of Ohio's best. Returnee Rod Cook shows potential. 2-MI LE RUN - Dean and Bowman seem to have the best shots in the 2-mile race. Both have outside chances to score in the conference meet. 3-MI LE RUN - Cook and Bowman probably will carry MSU's hopes in the three-mile. Inexperience will hurt the Eagles in all distance events.

MILE RELAY - Could be among the top events. Seven capable runners give MSU good depth and ability in relays. Jerry Wyche, Eddie Burton, Willie Jones, Jeff Washington, Rick Ferguson and Kelvin Kelley wi ll form the nucleus of the four-man team. If needed, sprinter Bobby Jones could add more speed to the squad. 2-MILE RELAY - Five runners give MSU a capable team but one that lacks depth. Ferguson, Kelley, Baughey, Thomas and Lee are the potential relay team members. MSU should be competitive if injuries do not interfere. ROSTER

Mike Marksbury THE ARENA

The James M. Richardson Arena, located at MSU's Derrickson Agricu ltural Complex north of Morehead on Ky. 377, is the home of Morehead State Univer sity's indoor track team. The portable track, install ed recently by Amalga mated Recreation Engineers and Network Associates of Vancouver, British Columbia, is the newest addition to MSU's athletic facilities. The four-lane 170-yard wooden track is the only indoor faci lity of its kind on a Kentucky coll ege campus. Considered by most experts as a "fast" track, the radius in curves is 46 feet and the bank is a perfect 19 degrees. A 60-yard straightaway is part of the infield area, including facilities for field events. Seating is available for more than 1,000 persons. Contoured fiberglass seats are located on both sides of the arena. When the track is not in place, the faci lity is used by MSU for horse shows, livestock sales and other activities of the agricultural program. Richardson Arena will be the site of the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track Championships on Feb. 18 and 19.
