3 The coveted trophy: the Henri Delaunay Cup HISTORY IN THE MAKING

HLaunched in 1960 as the UEFA European Nations Cup and held every four years, the Euro is widely considered to be the second most important event in world football.

1960: staged the inaugural European football tournament. The Soviet Union was the first nation to have its name inscribed on the trophy inspired by Henri Delaunay.

1984: France once again hosted the tour- nament, which had been renamed the UEFA European Football Championship. The French captain, Michel Platini, scored a record of nine goals, helping France to lift the trophy.

2016 : A new era begins. For the first time in UEFA European Championship history, the final tournament will see 24 sides bid for glory (compared with four teams between 1960 and 1976, eight teams between 1980 and 1992 and 16 teams between 1996 and 2012). Born in 1883, Henri Delaunay was one of France's greatest sporting personalities. He is credited in particular with helping to pioneer the FIFA World Cup. Delaunay devoted his entire life to football, never losing sight of his main goal of creating a major European tournament. He inspired the creation of the European Champion Clubs' Cup (today know as the Champions League). In 1960, five years after his death, his lifelong dream was realised with the first-ever European Cup of Nations (now the 'Euro').

In tribute to his contribution, the trophy that is awarded to the European champions is called the Henri Delaunay Cup. The original trophy was designed in 1960 in Paris by Arthus-Bertrand. The names of the winning nations are engraved on the cup.
