Title: What are the current characteristics of an Elementary School science program in the Albuquerque Public School District?

Description: The survey consisted of 22 questions that sought to determine the current characteristics of an elementary science program. The survey was sent to the principals from the Albuquerque Public School’s 93 elementary schools. The questions reference areas such as curriculum planning, budget, planning time and in-service/professional development.

Abstract: In January 2009, the State of New Mexico will adopt a set of primary and secondary education standards for excellence with benchmarks and performance standards in science. In preparation for the implementation of these standards and performance expectations, a survey is being sent to each elementary school principal in the Albuquerque Public Schools. The purpose of this survey is to determine the current characteristics of an elementary school science program.

Developer/Designer: Robotics Experiences for pre-service and in-service teacher competitions held at Emporia State University each semester. I developed this project as a way to reach students at the K-12 grade levels, introduce them to STEM careers, and develop testbeds by hosting disaster scenarios for classroom students and their teachers to compete against pre-service teacher candidates. “A disaster has occurred at a nuclear power plant. Responders must act fast to prevent an even worse catastrophe, but the environment inside the plant is extremely dangerous for human workers. Sounds pretty familiar, right? Straight from the world news to the robotics education front, this is the scenario that students face in Robo Rescue: Nuclear Fallout competitions at Skills USA events this year. Student teams must remote pilot their robot creation through a maze of obstacles and perform tasks to complete their mission and save the day”. The catch: the only visual information they have about the course comes from the small onboard camera with which their robot is equipped.
