Baptists Churches in Europe: The Creation of a Community [SLIDE 1] I want to trace some themes that I see as I look at the development of Baptist life in Europe – in mainland Europe. I will give some examples under each of these themes. So this is different from the geographical arrangement of my book, Communities of Conviction . The nineteenth century saw remarkable Baptist advance in mainland Europe, the leading figure in this advance being Johann Oncken (1800-1884), [SLIDE 2] an outstandingly gifted pastor in Hamburg who has been seen as the father of continental Baptists. One of Oncken’s most famous statements, which helped to shape German and European Baptist life, was that ‘we consider every member a missionary’, and he also viewed every church as a mission society. Prior to 1834, the year in which Oncken was baptised, organised Baptist life was virtually non-existent on the continent of Europe, whereas by 1900 there were about 220,000 members in Baptist churches and many more attending those churches. I want to bring in other strands of European Baptist life as well as the German Baptist story to illustrate my points about Baptist developments. I will not touch on the Italian story, as that is being covered, but I see in the Italian story many of the same developments. 1. Baptists drew from existing movements of spiritual renewal This means that there was a strong indigenous element in Baptist life. Baptist churches in mainland Europe are not to be seen as simply an import from outside. The story of Baptist beginnings in France provides an example of how an existing spiritual impetus prepared the way for Baptist life. -

Masters While many biographies of missionary William Carey have been written over the last two centuries, with the exception of John Clark Marshman’s “The Life and Times of Carey, Marshman and Ward: Embracing the History of the Serampore Mission”, published in the mid-nineteenth century, no major work has explored the history of the Serampore Mission founded by Carey and his colleagues. This thesis examines the roots of the Serampore Mission in Reformation theology. Key themes are traced through John Calvin, the Puritans, Jonathan Edwards, and Baptist theologian Andrew Fuller. In later chapters the thesis examines the ways in which these theological themes were worked out in a missiology that was both practical and visionary. The Serampore missionaries’ use of organizational structures and technology is explored, and their priority of preaching the gospel is set against the backdrop of their efforts in education, translation, and social reform. Version 1.0 © 1999 2 JOHN INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF JOHN The author of this Gospel is John, the son of Zebedee and Salome, the brother of James the greater; he outlived the rest of the disciples, and wrote this Gospel after the other evangelists; and in it many things are recorded, which are not in the other Gospels; as various discourses of Christ, and miracles done by him; several incidents in his life, and circumstances that attended his sufferings and death: the occasion of it is generally thought to be the errors of Ebion and Cerinthus, who denied the divinity of Christ, asserted he was a mere man, and that he did not exist before his incarnation; and the design of it is to confute them: and it is easy to observe, that he begins his Gospel with the divinity of Christ; asserts him to be God, and proves him to be truly and properly so, by the works of creation, which were wrought by him, as well as shows that he was really man. Clemens f1 calls this Gospel of John, pneumatikon euaggelion~ “a spiritual Gospel”, as indeed it is; consisting of the spiritual discourses of our Lord, on various occasions, both at the beginning, and in the course of his ministry, and especially a little before his sufferings and death: and the same writer observes, that John, the last of the evangelists, considering that in the other Gospels were declared the things relating to the body of Christ, that is, to him, as he was after the flesh; to his genealogy and birth as man; to what was done to him, or by him, in his infancy; to his baptism, temptations, journeys, etc. -

George Fry and John M. Drickamer As Lutheranism enters the 1980's some theologians are already suggesting that the denominational "battle for the Bible" waged with such fervor in the 1970's was really a "departure from mainstream classical Protestantism." These scholars contend that "the Scripture ruckus" was caused either by "the importation of Fundamentalism into Lutheranism" or else it was "a peculiar distortion wrought by modern Missouri." Such opinions could hardly be further from the truth. Lest this view gain undue credence, we believe it is helpful to indicate that Lutheranism, when it has been true to its tradition, has always had a high regard for the Scriptures as the Word of God. Such a conviction, furthermore, was, in former times, not limited primarily to the Missouri and Wisconsin Synods. It was nearly universal among America's Lutheran bodies. An illustration of this thesis can be found by looking at the doctrine of Biblical authority in the theology of Henry Eyster Jacobs, a major Lutheran theologian of the start of this century, who had no organic connection with either of the Midwest Lutheran Synods that today uphold a "high view" of the Bible. -

In their campaigns for freedom, Baptists formed alliance with other evangelicals and with political figures. Baptists were also concerned with liberty of conscience more widely. Biblical Authority and New Testament Scholarship The Laing Lecture for 1985 Donald Guthrie [p.7] There can be no doubt that the subject of biblical authority is an important theme, perhaps the most important theme that faces the Christian church today. But the question of its meaning is confused because of the lack of precision with which the term is used. Indeed many scholars from widely differing schools of thought claim the authority of the Bible, but clearly mean different things by the same term. Our primary task must be to comment on the nature of biblical authority before discussing the various attitudes of contemporary New Testament scholars towards it.1 The basic idea behind authority is that of relationship. Before it can become a reality there must be one to exert authority and others to accept it. Such authority can exist in a derived sense in impersonal enactments, as for example in laws, but the real power rests in the executives who frame them and the enforcement officers whose task it is to ensure that they are kept and to punish offenders. Only in a limited sense can we speak of authority vested in statutes. This is an important consideration when we attempt to define biblical authority.2 Whereas it may appear that we are attributing authority to a book, which has given rise to the charge of bibliolatry, the Bible possesses authority only by virtue of its origin, ie by the authority of God. -

Uniting Church in Sweden A Theological Foundation Introduction 1. There is only one true and living God – The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit – who creates, saves, and gives life. Creation and salvation come from the hand of God, and are outpourings of the same divine love. Life is meaningful since it is created by God. At the same time life is threatened by evil, fragmentation, and death. Sin separates humans from God. All are born into a divided world, and are part of both the evil and the good in the existence. God became man in Jesus of Nazareth. He proclaims the gospel of the kingdom of God, defeats the power of sin and death, and restores humans and creation. Through the crucified and risen Christ, the first born of the new creation and true image of God, the way to new life is opened. The Holy Spirit calls to conversion and faith in Jesus Christ, childhood with God, and fellowship in the Christian congregation. The Spirit equips humans to live in imitation of Christ, and sanctification. The Spirit leads the Church in this time, and calls it to carry the hope of eternal life.
