Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

TEACHER UNDONE by KRISTI BRUCE AMATUCCI (Under the Direction of Elizabeth A. St. Pierre) ABSTRACT A post-qualitative dissertation, this self-study follows the five-year career of a new teacher as she balances competing stresses in, around, and outside the classroom. She transacts with students, fellow teachers, administrators, governmental mandates, prescribed curricula, standardized tests, public scrutiny, the criminal justice system, parents and families of her students, her own family and friends, as well as her desires, histories, and memories. Teaching is not what she thought it was; it overwhelms her. In an attempt to escape the rigors of life as high school teacher and to examine teaching in America today, she returns to the university to pursue her doctoral degree in education, only to find that her questions about teaching multiply, becoming more complex and muddled than she ever imagined. She finds no answers, only a cascade of conundrums. The theoretical framework of this study is post-structuralism, and the author relies primarily on the work of Michel Foucault, Helene Cixous, Judith Butler, and Jacques Derrida, among others, to frame her approach. The methodology of this work is a strategy called writing to know, as outlined by Laurel Richardson and Elizabeth St. Pierre. The author writes in an attempt to untangle her multiple teaching selves; yet as she writes, she finds herself becoming more and more enmeshed, confused, confident, eager, and surprised as she follows the words that pour unbridled out of her. The work does not lend itself to neat conclusions or prescriptions for future teacher education programs.

  • The Archaeological Channel International Film Festival June 23
1 The Archaeological Channel International Film Festival ● June 23-27, 2021 1 WELCOME to The Archaeology Channel International Film Festival! Welcome to the eighteenth annual edition of TAC International Film Festival, Lane County’s longest-running film festival! What we began in 2003 as an extension of our very popular website, The Archaeology Channel, for live audiences has grown into one of the leading film competitions in the cultural heritage genre world- wide. Thanks a million to the hundreds of people and dozens of partnering organizations and sponsors who have made this possible! Please support our sponsors and let them know that you appreciate their commit- ment to this unique cultural exhibition. In today’s world, we face increasing challenges in the areas of social justice and international relations. We need improved cross-cultural understanding among people to move the world toward resolving these prob- lems. Studies have shown that exposing young people to other cultures helps them appreciate different modes of thinking. We believe that this positive influence applies to people of all ages. Exposing our audi- ence to diverse cultures and the many stories that make up the collective human past is a contribution we sincerely want to make. What once was primarily an exhibition of film has become, even more importantly, a meeting place for those with stories to tell and audiences to reach. We continue to develop this event as a mechanism to push for- ward the genre of cultural heritage media while exhibiting the best film productions in the world. This genre is widely admired and viewed worldwide, but filmmakers, broadcasters, indigenous groups, archaeologists, his- torians, educators, and others experience big challenges with program development, funding, content, and distribution.

Enter The Haggis – Short Biography Toronto roots rock band, Enter The Haggis, has proven itself to be a true grassroots success story, and never has this been more evident than with the groupʼs latest release, The Modest Revolution. Inspired entirely by the content of one Canadian newspaper, and funded entirely through the generous contributions of loyal fans, The Modest Revolution represents the latest step in the groupʼs exciting musical journey. Seven albums and a decade plus on the road have seen Enter The Haggis evolve from wildly popular local band to established international touring act, with a sound that lies somewhere between the fiercely creative and contemporary soundscapes of Radiohead, and the heartfelt story telling and infectious grooves of The Band. Their formula for success has been a simple one: record great music, back it up with inspired live performances, and tour constantly. Itʼs this uncompromising commitment to their music and fans that has seen the band garner top ten charting positions on Billboard, Amazon, and iTunes; major television appearances such as A&Eʼs Breakfast with the Arts and Live with Regis and Kelly; and their very own PBS special.
